It is time to get into better physical condition. I have always struggled with managing my weight, but have been very active. I have had a few physical injuries over the last few years that have slowed down much of that activity, plus the fact that I aint getting any younger. Over the weekend I aggravated an old knee injury that has probably been compounded by my weight. It is almost embarrassing to say it, but I figure that I say it out loud (or type it for all to see) it will help me to quit fooling myself. Today I tipped the scales at 310. Today the change in lifestyle begins. I have an appointment tomorrow with my doc to check out the knee (and the opposite ankle). My initial goal, which I am sure I will adjust, is to lose 100 pounds. I am going to use this thread to remind me, and to chart my progress. I have no illusions about the difficulty of the changes I am making, but make them I must. Wish me luck.
I do wish you luck. I've started down the same course so we'll cheer each other on!!

A big part of survival - of just surviving everyday life - is physical fitness. That is a survival tool that I wan to have.

Me also, I more or less started two weeks ago when I moved back into my shack. I weighed the most I have ever weighed this last winter, (DAMN sitting around watching the T.V.thingie & doing nothing). I clocked in at 232.5 pounds the day I move. But I have been doing one or two hikes per-day.

I'm with ya, crash.....and huntermj is right, about the doctors. I think mine makes stuff up, every time I go to his office. I'm in the same boat as a couple of you. My quest is to get in good enough shape, that when I visit my doctor three months from now, he will OK me not taking anymore meds. I'm border line, on blood pressure, and on blood sugar. He has me on meds, but I know if I get in better shape, I won't need them.
And for the record, crash, I had gotten to just over 280.:blushing:

I'd wish you luck, but I don't think you need it. Instead I'll say Good Decision, and stick to it. You know you have a large support group here. We can't do all the exercises with you, but if you need ideas, or just a vote of confidence, you know you can call on us.
Good job. If I have one recommendation, though, set your goal much lower.. like 10 lbs. That way you have shorter gaps between "progress" and you can keep a much better outlook.
Have you figured out your plan of attack yet? protein shakes and raw eggs? yoga? Kama Sutra?
Crash,
Good on you! I'm going to join you.
Before we came to Brazil (99) I had been travelling for two years raising support, eating out alot and eating in peoples homes I got up to my lifetime high of 225. Brazil is very good to me weight wise and after being here a year I was down to 205, but very out of shape.
Back in 2003 I got real serious about my condition and joined a gym. After a year of that I was up to five days a week for 1.5 hours. I was down to a very solid 185 and felt fantastic.
Some milestones:
I was headed out for a four day trip and stepped on the scale to weight my pack. The pack weighed 26 pounds but the scale read my former weight. I can't tell you how cool it was to set that pack down and realize I had been carrying it for years.
I had to take the bus home from church down town. I had to switch to a different bus halfway and got off at the wrong stop. My actual stop was three blocks away and since it was very late with few busses running I was in danger of missing the bus. I sprinted the three blocks. I arrived at the stop, took two deep breaths and felt totally normal. A year before I would have been puking.
I said all that to say this, I weigh 205 pounds right now and need to get serious again. I'm 44, it ain't going to happen on its own.

Good Luck, I have held 200+ or - 10lbs for twenty years but like Rick said, guess I cut out on too many poles and shrunk some. When I retired in '96 I had to cut back on the chow. I think you can make it, and I understand the knees well, occupational hazard for me.

I have a confession. In Jan I hit 60 and I have given up.
I have had weight issues all my life. Not obese, just too heavy. I have fought to be what some skinny jerk said I should weigh for 50 of my 60 years. I have come to the conclusiion that TRYING to control my weight puts so much stress on me it keeps my blood preasure elevated.
Then there was the heart attack. That came during one of the skinny periods. Should not have happened! Just had a checkup and the Doc bragged on me for all the weight loss, stopped smoking, and good habits!!
BAMM!!! Three stints and four baloons and 6 days in CIC. Heart not working on its own for 3 days.
Then they blind sided me. The meds.
Every med they put me on had the side effect of weight gain. Here they were giving me meds that crashed my metabolism and telling me I was gaining weight due to over eating. I was gaining weight on a 1,000 calorie a day diet.
Final straw was when the 5'2", 250 lb nurse told me the problem was my lack of strigent heart healthy eating habits.
My present to me for my 60th birthday was that I finaml gave myself permission to not give a $&!* what the height weight or body mass index chart says.
Guess what! I have lost 10 pounds since my birthday. BP is back to normal.

Way to go kyrat!!! However you get there is a good thing.
Your story reminds me of what some couples go through trying to get pregnant. After all the stress, expense, side effects and no results, they give up. They finally relax. Get their life back. They decide to adopt. Then they get pregnant and have a baby. :)
Sometimes you've got to get your mind on track for the body to follow.
If you feel good and can do what matters to you then who cares what the charts say? The charts tell me I should weigh 170 IIRC. I haven't weighed that since 9th grade! I ran on the treadmill like a freakin' gerbil for a year and couldn't get below 185. I had a six pack...still buried under a slab of bacon but I felt great.
It's not just women that get sucked into the body image thing. I came to the conclusion that I have enough abs to keep my guts from falling out and that's their job. I'm going to the bush for two days. I know that when I'm in better shape I enjoy it more and that's what it's all about.
Mac
I still wear the same size pants I did in the 8th grade. I just wear them a lot lower.

Good luck, buddy! It's the late night snacks that'll kill ya'.
Remember I dropped 30 lbs. earlier this year? I've only gained 2 of them back. A few suggestions:
Oatmeal
Blueberries
Salmon
Hard Boiled Eggs
A few Almonds each day
Yogurt - or at least two servings of dairy (not cheese) each day
High Fiber V-8 juice. Fiber is critical.
V-8 Fusion Light
Take a good multi-vitamin every day.
Pig out one day - BUT ONLY ONE DAY - a week, but not more than you do now. If you don't, you will be miserable and walk away from any diet within a couple of weeks.
Eat a 500 calorie breakfast, even if you normally don't eat in the morning.
No snacking 3 hours before bed.
.........and exercise every morning to get that metabolism cranked up for the day.
I know you can do it! :)
And WATER! Drink at least 2 quarts a day.

The first week has passed, and I have one more week of the "fat flush" before I start eating the way I plan to for a long time. My goal as I started was to lose 100 pounds, and I wanted to average about 2 pounds a week. I knew that the first week would be a bigger number (wish I could do it every week), but then would get down closer to my 2 pound a week goal. Today I got weighed in at 296, for a loss of 14 pounds.

Unfortunately not any other than working. I'm riding a stationary bike (no resistance) for a little bit every day, but that is to keep the fluid down on my knee. MRI is on the 14th. The Ortho doc thinks (won't know for sure until after the MRI) a fairly minor orthoscopic surgury will fix it, with a fairly short recovery time. I hope he's right, I miss my walks dagnabit.
It is hot, but I just drink a lot of water - probably why I'm so anal about storing so much water in case of emergency.

It's not your friend if you can't haul a$$ when you need to. Or when you get a heart attack trying to. Or a stroke that leaves you paralyzed. That makes sense on the surface, and is true for morbid obesity, but not in reality. As in any conflict SHTF will result in more deaths due to bad water, disease and starvation than from not properly dodging bullets. Thanks to the receint research in treating anorexia, and the records kept by Doctors during the Warsaw Getto uprisings and concentration camp horrors, we can confirm what most have long suspected.
During a disaster the person that goes in with extra weight lasts longer than his or her skinny friends. Espically when a population is starved interntionally or by default.

Glad to hear you're sticking with it. I'm down to 199 but a week long training session in Sao Paulo at a hotel didn't do me any good at all as far as weight is concerned! Crash you inspire me as well. Well, and having to work out in the shop the last couple of weeks doing the physical part of my job and just dripping sweat until it literally looks like I've been swimming. The other guys who are used to working out there don't let up on me either.
Funny, I haven't gained weight though. Just redistributed mass to all the wrong places in the last two years because of my back. The back is fairly good now so no excuse anymore.
I've got the refridge cleaned out and am following the same diet plan Ken listed, which I know works for me when there isn't ice cream and crap around. Want to get from a 38 waist back to a 34 again and re-build the upper body. I'm a little guy, 5'-4" at 184. Let's see where it goes.
Keep going Crash. You can do it.
Wait. You eat crap? I think that right there is your problem. I'd stick with just the ice cream. No more crap ala mode for you, mister.

one thing i do are 'commercial exercises' and 'microwave exercises'
whenever im watching tv, and a commercial comes on, i usually do pushups for one whole commercial. then rest the next commercial, then pushups the next, etc. You could switch in any exercise though
and when im microwaving something for a few minutes, i do counter top pushups
theyre pretty easy, but after 4 mins of doing them youll get tired. othertimes i hold my arms out (so my body is like a T) and hold them up for the entire microwave time.
its a good way to sneak in some exercise when you feel like you might not have too much time

I agree with Winnie, not that I've ever been on anything less than a see-food diet, but I know lots of people have breaks in the loss.. it's your body adjusting to having less food. Given our heat and humidity, you should put down at least a quart an hour if you are sitting idle. I sat outside yesterday knapping and making trigger sticks (practicing setting primitive traps in the back yard). I would be willing to bet I was losing a cup of water every 30 minutes just in sweat.

I lost a 13 lbs in 4 weeks with an iphone app called Livestrong. There's a free internet based version too I think.
You put in your weight and activity level then how much weight you want to lose per week and it spits out how many calories you can eat a day.
You enter what you eat as the day goes on and it tells you how many calories you have left to consume that day. If you exercise you can enter that and it will tell you how many calories you bruned and add those calories to how much you can eat for the day.
My father has lost 22lbs with it in 2 months.

I have not had to diet so far to loose the 40# but I'll have to diet now, as other than some chores, and my daily walks, it is mostly reading a good book. And unless the book is Penthouse, I don't burn many colories reading.

Thanks for the reminder: Tomorrow I'll need to pump the three 55 Gal. drums of non-potable water into the outhouse, and stir it up.

Perhaps it's just that I haven't seen you in a year, so I notice the difference more, but I reckon your weight is just about fine. If you hadn't said which one was you in the group photo, I was going to ask!

Well, I started this thread about four years ago. During the ensuing three years I dieted and exercised successfully and unsuccessfully. The bottom line was that I was never able to achieve long term success. It took well over a year to make the decision, but I finally decided to take drastic action. I am nearing retirement, and thought - what's the point if I can't do the things that I enjoy. I (we) work hard all our lives so that we can live comfortably, but that shouldn't mean not doing things that we enjoy or finally have time to do in retirement. Even with my obesity I still was very active, but was finding it more and more difficult to do the things I enjoy.
So............Last January (the 22nd) I had gastric bypass surgery. Now - this is not a "magic bullet", but it certainly set me on the correct path. I still have to work at it every day. I have now reached my goal weight of 180 (a 130 pound loss) and have been maintaining so far. I exercise regularly, eat five small meals a day, and track everything.
I encourage anybody that has weight issues to take a look at it. You may/probably won't need to take as drastic a step as I did, but for your future enjoyment and the enjoyment of your loved ones - please take a look.
B has always said (and is correct) that we too often overlook our own physical survival while focusing on the latest gear and gadgets. My thoughts were that the latest and greatest gear wouldn't help me if I had to use a walker to get around.
Here's a current, albeit fuzzy pic.

Wow! You look great! It is amazing to see the transformation since I last saw you Oct of 2013. Congratulations on your success. I thank you for sharing your experience and encouraging others to take action. I am now the heaviest I have ever been at 202lbs and have about 40lbs to lose. This is very encouraging for me to begin to at least try to do something. Thanks and enjoy the new body!
I tried to give you rep, but it said I need to spread the love.

All I can say is, WOW! You look like a whole different person and you look younger, somehow. Maybe because we expect younger people to be slim and in shape. SO glad you pulled the trigger on that one. I'll bet Mrs, C feels like she is cheating on her husband with you.
Congratulations on your perseverance throughout the years!

Dang Crash, you look fantastic! Yep, last week I started on a "diet". I keep complaining that all my friends are turning into fat old ladies who don't want to go do anything fun (camping, canoeing, etc.) but in truth, I was too. I weigh more now then I ever have other then when pregnant and am not ok with it. So yep, working it!

WOO HOO! Lookin' great! This is a full-on inspiration to me, Crash! Thank you! I've been having similar thoughts myself, of late -- what good is the gear if the old carcass won't cooperate the way it needs to in a survival situation. Physical conditioning really is critical. Thank you!

That is great crash! A very difficult challenge.
Just last night my 13 year old daughter had a fight with her older sister about which snacks were just hers. She told me that all the snacks and small meals in the pantry that are mine are very yucky. I told her they are that way intentionally and I drink 2 - 4 quarts of water per day on a cool day for a reason. Park remotely etc. Someday she will understand the method to my madness.
