Now not only is the federal government in a position to take over Goldman Sachs...one of the largest financial banks in the WORLD, but the environmentalists now have a foundation to totally eliminate American drilling.
Guess I need to rethink new windows this year, and look into a secondary heat source before winter. There's no way I will be able to afford my heating oil after this crap. Ridiculous.

NEW YORK (The Borowitz Report) - In what is looming as another public relations predicament for Goldman Sachs, the banking giant admitted today that it made "a substantial financial bet against the Gulf of Mexico" one day before the sinking of an oil rig in that body of water.

The new revelations came to light after government investigators turned up new emails from Goldman employee Fabrice "Fabulous Fab" Tourre in which he bragged to a girlfriend that the firm was taking a "big short" position on the Gulf.

"One oil rig goes down and we're going to be rolling in dough," Mr. Tourre wrote in one email. "Suck it, fishies and birdies!"

The news about Goldman's bet against the Gulf comes on the heels of embarrassing revelations that the firm had taken a short position on Lindsay Lohan's acting career. More here.

These guys are no different than any bar stool bookie, except for the fact that the bookie is much more honest.

These types of bets should be legally restricted to casinos and betting parlors. People entrust these guys with their hard earned assets. How can any licensed financial investment firm be permitted to engage in such shenanigans?

They are no better than politicians, never shake their hand and never turn your back on them. It shows you how far down the line ethics has fallen in priorities. I fight the unethical a** holes at work on a daily basis, it has become my favorite indoor sport :)

Was GS involved in screwing up the rig?
When people made money w/GS in the past was anyone complaining? Was it in the press?

How is this against the law?

I don't believe it is, but it should be. Investment houses shouldn't be permitted to shoot craps with their investors' money.

Most investors are neither accredited nor sophisticated enough to understand the real nature of the "investments" these purported professionals recommend to them. Little did they know. For the last decade or two, investment houses have forgotten that their loyalty first belongs to their clients and that their personal desire to earn a fortune comes second. We've seen far too many instances, from Madoff to Goldman-Sachs to AIG, where the investment advisors and executives induced their clients into investing in crazy schemes where the clients lost a fortune and the investment advisors and executives made billions - this has to stop.

Highly speculative and high risk "investment schemes" are better suited for casinos rather than supposed "reputable investment firms." All the government has done is to allow the so-called "licensed professionals" to gamble wildly with investments, pensions, state and municipal funds - you name it. The public has a right to rely on the integrity of licensed firms, and it's about time we forced these firms to actually operate with integrity - for a change.

It's time that we stopped all the insane "investment" schemes that nearly destroyed Wall Street, the banking industry, and the insurance industry, and got back to the basics, like stocks and bonds.

Let people who want to gamble go to the casinos and their local bookies. At least then they'll know what the game is all about, and the actual nature of the risk involved.

Consider these two statements:

"If that quarterback gets his neck broken during the game, we're going to be rolling in dough," Mr. Bookie wrote in one email. "Suck it, quarterback's family!"

and

"One oil rig goes down and we're going to be rolling in dough," Mr. Tourre wrote in one email. "Suck it, fishies and birdies!"

How are these two statements different? The answer is, they're not. :sneaky2:

BTW, for whatever it's worth, I spent a few years (in the early - mid 1980's) in the securities processing (mutual funds) industry. Some of what I did involved training management in portfolio diversification, disclosure requirements, and blue-sky reporting requirements.

I have a problem with the whole GS thing, personally. I don't know where we draw the line on investments. If GS invests in GM that's okay but if they bet short on an investment then it's wrong? Unfortunately, the way the laws are written, it just gets grayer and grayer instead of turning white to black.

As for folks not being sophisticated enough to invest then they need to stay out of the market. You don't sit down at a $1000 a bet table and ask them to play your hand for you. They expect that you know how to play or at least know how to pay. The same is true of stocks. It might come as a surprise but the overwhelming vast majority of Financial Managers working in any house are NOT there for the client. They are there to make a living and someone has to pay their salary. Guess who that someone is. The client. Having said that...if my Financial Manager makes me more money than I have to pay out then I'm fine with him making the money. If not, time to find a new manager.

Exactly right.
And let's not forget that all GS clients are big time investors--millions and millions. No snowbirds there. As said earlier, when GS was making them money using the same MO no one was complaining and it didn't make press. It's capitalism at it's fiercest.

Not funny. Seems like the Goldman Sachs story quoted above was "satire." :sneaky2:

However, looks like GS still shorted the Gulf of Mexico.

Take a look at this article. Interesting observations from expert Paul Noel about the predictability of the Gulf disaster.

"There is a reason they could have known the rig was going to fail up to two weeks ahead of its failure."
