In case anyone is wondering what began some of the downward slide we find ourselves on, read this:

When the government took away a parent's (grandparent's) right to discipline an unruly/disobedient/disrespectful child and began calling discipline "abuse," many parents lost control of their kids. Schools today teach kids to call the police if their parents even spank them.
The police have no discretion. Hell, I'd like to think of cops as being more than robots doing a pre-programmed task.
There isn't a "fine line" between discipline and abuse - there's a major distinction between the two.
Government ties a parent's hands and then has the ballz to hold them responsible later for their kid's actions. Something is terribly wrong with this picture! :sneaky2:

I agree.
I also think that some parents are just plain wimps and probably lack some discipline themselves.

I got whippings when I was a kid and normally I had to pick my own switch. If I didn't pick a good one I got two whippings.
A quick pop on the butt is not abuse. If your kid does something wrong and you punch them in the face, lock them in a room and starve them, and burn them with cigarettes... yeah, THAT is abuse.
It's important for kids to realize at an early age, one of the basic laws of physics: causality. Actions have consequences. A cause has an effect, not the other way around. Good-hearted actions have good consequences, and bad actions get you a good spanking.
There are all sorts of punishments for different offences. Restrictions and loss of privelidges go a long way, but what do you do when loss of such things have no effect on behavior? How did we get here? How did the line get moved all the way to the left, so that even physical disciplinary action is considered abuse.
I remember in Kindergarten EVERY kid in my class got a spanking on the third day of school. The principal told us "If you don't behave, you'll get more of that!"
I was on my best behavior all year long!
Now, even if you take away privelidges, you are "depriving" your kids and they can still cry wolf.
Still not sure I understand how we got here, so that you can no longer discipline your children, but I think it's time for Law Enforcement, and Legislators to take a back seat and leave it up to us how we raise our kids. I got spankings and I turned out okay. I think of myself as respectful, and considerate, but I see lots of kids (some of my children's friends) who make DEMANDS of their parents.
Sorry, but I'll go to jail before I let a 12 year old tell me what they will and won't do. I discipline my kids appropriately. Start a fight and you are GONNA get a whoopin' and lose some priviledges. Back talk gets you a whole evening with no tv, phone calls, or video games.
Personally, I feel this is the way it should be. The punishment should fit the offense.
I think some parents are so stressed these days, driven by careers and money and bills, etc. that they lose focus in the heat of the moment. What happened to self control in adulthood? How the hell do you break your kids arm or burn them with cigarettes, or punch them in the face and still feel like a human being? There is no "fine line" between discipline and abuse. There's an ocean between the two.
Granted, abuse does happen, and it needs to be stopped, but more often, the underlying cause is cyclic and triggered. I mean, the parent was likely abused and simply doesn't know better.
Dad told me if I got a spanking at school then I'd get one at home. I got double popped quite a bit as a kid.
I told my kids if you get a spanking at school then you get one at home. One of mine learned like I did.
Spare the rod and spoil the child is more than just a saying.

I never got "spanked" after I was a toddler i suppose,,, But I did get popped in the mouth a couple of times by the old man.

I never had to go cut my own switch. I did however have to retrieve my dad's Police Duty Belt from time to time. When he was through, I had to clean it, oil it, and then put it away.
When I was around 6, I got the worst present ever. :sneaky2: Once that elastic got too short, I found out what "multi-purpose" meant. :innocent:

My mom was the enforcer in our family.
The last whooping I got was when I was 16! Then I moved away to school but still felt that she could see and know everything hundreds of miles away. I behaved even when I didn't have to.
At the time I thought that she was too strict and inflexible-her MO was slap first, don't ask questions now or later. A little over the top but it worked. I suppose the ends justify the means?

I remember being registering for the third grade, and the shock and disgust I felt when they asked my mother if they were allowed to administer corporal punishment on me if need be, and my mom saying "oh yes certainly":ohmy: Those were just different times back then I guess. We havn't been asked that yet by our kids teachers. I got plenty of spankings from my dad and once by my granddad. I deserved it every single time.

I spent a good part of my early years living in fear of verbal abuse, sudden violent outbursts, outragous demands and being blamed for things I had not done.
It was good preperation for marriage and employment.

One factor that dragged the US ranking down was its maternal mortality rate, which at one in 4,800 is one of the highest in the developed world, said the report.

I'm pretty sure those numbers, just like infant mortality numbers have been disproven in the past. Many of those poorer countries don't keep accurate date, or even see a doctor in a clinical setting. When deaths occur (infant or mother) they go unreported because there really is no agency that tracks that sort of thing.

I'm not sure exactly what our "maternity leave policy" is in the U.S., but here are a few of my thoughts on the subject:
1. I have given my staff generous sick leave and vacation benefits. If a staff member has a baby, she can use that time at her discretion. Am I expected to pay her (as some countries do) for staying home for a year?
2. How many pregnancies am I expected to carry her for? Say she has 4 kids in 5 years - am I expected to pay her 5 years salary for 1 year's work? What happens if she chooses to get another job after I pay her for all those years?
3. When my ex and I chose to have children, we made a conscious decision, fully understanding that she would stop working. I was brand new in my field at the time, and was at the low-end of the pay scale. We had 3 children in 4 years. Having kids involved a huge financial sacrifice that we accepted. I didn't expect anyone to subsidize our income because she no longer worked outside of the home. Why should I subsidize someone else?
4. How about the replacement staff member I hire. Am I required to pay her maternity leave also? When does it end?
5. Should the government pay these benefits? God knows we already have enough mothers motivated to give birth because of the government benefits and/or child support they expect to receive.
6. Whatever happened to assuming the financial consequences of your own choices? Is everything supposed to be entitled to a handout from the government or the employer?
7. How does someone having a child they can't afford to have benefit society as a whole?
Child birth is covered under the Family Leave and Medical Act.

Anyway, here's my bottom line: If you can't afford the financial burden associated with having children and caring for them PROPERLY, don't have them. If you do, you shouldn't expect others, including those who have made the responsible choice to not have kids they couldn't afford, to subsidize your decision.
BOTTOM LINE.....corporal punishment......WOOT!!!!

Ken, that was just a direct quote from the article, not MPO. The article surprised me on many levels mostly because I didn't know how far back we lagged in these matters. Even if half of it is in dispute, enough is left to make one wonder where the balance lies.
Now to your points.
Believe it or not, I agree with all of them 100%. As people who weren't prepared to make the sacrifices you and your wife made when you decided to have children, we chose not to have any. We weren't going to multitask and make believe we could have it all.
I deplore the lack of foresight and responsibility people exercise when having children and I resent having to make up for it.
Short of preventing people from having kids they can't afford, (IMO the thing to do) we need to deal with those who are already here. If we don't, the consequences aren't hard to imagine--we're already facing them now.

Never laid a hand on my kids once. Should I have? Oh, yeah. But I didn't. Wanna' know why?
By the time my kids were old enough for corporal punishment, which I believe in, I had already seen several cases, including a few of my own clients, who had been charged with child abuse for what I believed was appropriate and measured punishment and other bullsh*t reasons. These were GOOD parents. Not only did these people have to face the courts, they were also subjected to DCF involvement in their families, sometimes for years.
IMHO, Mass DCF is one of the most grossly institutionally incompetent government agencies ever established. Nothing like a bunch of 20 something year old inexperienced sociology grads working as case workers telling people how to raise their kids. This is one of the agencies the law created for the ulterior purpose of destroying the social fabric of families and giving the government control over households.
I was MOST impressed with DCF a couple of years back when I was at a restaurant where they were holding their Christmas party. Many of them, over half, were wasted drunk. Wonder how many drove home. Wonder how many of them endangered other kids who may have been on the road, and how many went home drunk to their own kids.
One of them came up to the bar and started talking (slurred speech) about his lousy job and the fact that all his clients were idiots. I played along. Then he asked me what I did for a living. I pointed to three of his supervisors and named them all. I told him to ask them. :sneaky2:

You know how it often works? Billy's dad gives him a good well-deserved smack for mouthing off to his mother. Next day in school, Billy tells Bobby that his dad smacked him. Then Bobby, who's been properly indoctrinated by the school system, tells the teacher (a "mandated reporter"), who is required to tell the principal (a "mandated reporter"), who is required to confront both Bobby and Billy about what was said, and to also notify DCF immediately.
DCF will arrive at the school in minutes (sometimes accompanied by the police) and get statements from everyone.
Next, DCF will arrive at the parents' home or workplace unexpectedly and confront the parents about the "serious allegations of child abuse." Each parent will be told that another DCF worker is speaking to the other parent at that very same time. (DCF is NOT required to give Miranda warnings.) The parents will each panic and try to "explain" what happened.
Next, DCF almost without exception "substantiates" the allegations of physcal abuse (and possibly "neglect" as well) and comes up with a one-year "service plan" for the dysfunctional family. Everyone will end up in some sort of counselling, under DCF threat to take "emergency custody" (no court approval required) of the children in the home because they are "at risk" of further neglect and/or abuse.
Criminal "domestic abuse" charges are often brought by the police as well.

Ken, I am not aware of that happening here in NYC but I frequently read about actual abuse cases falling through the cracks until the child is accidentally discovered by others, either damaged or dead.

I do believe in swatting as a last resort but let's face it, if parents really wanted to instill some discipline and be consistent about it, swatting may not be necessary. It's usually the easier way out.
Disciplining kids takes time, hard work and follow through. It requires that you fill them in ahead of time what consequences to count on when they choose the behavior and then deliver on it. Good or bad. I've seen it work like a charm. I also think it's a better lesson in the long run.

Sometimes it's not that simple. Good parents, even GREAT parents, don't necessarily result in good kids. I know of several who have GREAT kids except for one who turns out to be a real POS.

Me 16. Dad 51 (yeah, I came along late). We both meet in the kitchen doorway. He says, "Are you going to move?" I say, "If you want me to move then move me". He says...nothing. Picked me up, turned around and sat me down and walked on through. To his last day I always let dad go first. Afraid not to.

I never had kids. I wanted them whenI was younger but that didn't work out. My mom did turn out to have an abusive streak and if things were like they were today I probably would have called the police on her. But who knows where I would have ended up? I took care of the situation and put a stop to it. I don't think a little hand smack or a swat on the behind is a bad thing. You can't reason with a small child about some things and if the fear of that will keep them safe the it's a good thing. If you have to start using belts, switches, etc... then there is a problem.

I never did ,or dont to this day use that type of language in front of my parrents.As a child i was afraid to,now it's out of respect to them,I had my posterier fired up several times as a child,and my mouth slapped as a teen for backtalking.I once told my father "NO",and very quickly realized that that was a mistake,after i peeled myself off of the wall.At almost 46 years of age,i suffer no ill effects from being disiplined as a child,and and my own children (10 and 14) show no signs of "damage"mentaly or physically,from being brought up the same way.Disipline is the differance between a child that knows how to behave,and take responsiblity,and the child that screams at his parents,hits them,cusses,and go on shooting sprees at their local malls.Like it or not,it's just the facts.

Hmmm, lots of discussion on this one. I have a lot to add to many people's comments. I will start with the original topic.
When I was a kid, my dad spanked us all. Not a lot, but we knew we would get it if misbehaving. My mom had bad arthritis, and it hurt her hand to spank us. So, we always had to wait till dad got home. For my kids, they only get swatted if they do major infractions. And, I mean major. This would be something that potentially might get them killed (unbuckling a seat belt, running across the road without looking ). But, in reality I don't believe in it. I think it is a sign of week parenting skills. And yes, I am not an amazing parent, and sometimes lose my temper. But, every time I whacked my kids, I probably could have done something different to punish them. A good parent will be able to administer discipline without violence. The problem is that there are very few good parents. Most don't know how. It is even harder for grandparents because they aren't the ones that generally discipline. A lot to talk about here, but I will stop for now.
Now to DCF. In Texas it was called CPS. My mother in law adopted 4 kids through CPS. I got to see the whole process and was continually utterly amazed at the incompetence of the social workers. My biggest complaint is that they have no real oversight. When you foster or adopt, you are assigned a social worker. If you are assigned a crappy one who can't do their job properly, there is no way to even voice your concerns. There is no one to tell that they suck. My sister in law in Nevada also adopted 4 kids from the state. I saw the same problem with that state as well. The entire nation's foster and adoption programs are broken. Incidentally, on a different topic, this is the same problem I see with the Human Society, SPCA, and other animal control groups.

My dad was the voice of authority, mum was the cavalry. In other words, dad never laid a hand on us, but mum was a demon shot with a flick of a damp teatowel! Ooo I can feel it now! Dad was brought up not to hit women and that included his daughters, so poor old mum was the disciplinarian. You knew you were in major big trouble if you heard dad shout "Margot! Come and sort these girls out!"
With regard to the maternity pay/leave thing It's got rediculous over here, and I happen to agree with you Ken. If a woman wants a child they should be in a position to support themselves whilst bringing that child up, or be prepared to return to work if they're not. Personally I think a lot of the worlds ills would be sorted out by one parent staying at home to bring up their own children instead of farming them out to daycare.

agreed. For the last 12 years my wife has been a homemaker. Now that the youngest is old enough to fend for himself, and after a few spankings as a child I believe he really is responsible and trustworthy enough. Now she's working to help take some of the pressure off me. We've got some pretty good kids (as much as teenagers can be I guess, lol)
Good children are the product of good raising and discipline. I was lucky that my babysitter was also a homemaker her whole life and knew what values to instill in me for the future, since both my parents worked (and so did my grandparents). The only drawback was that I always felt my Nanny was more family than anyone else, and for the first and only time ever I cried at a funeral.
Winnie, I have to agree with you. My wife either didn't work or worked part time for a lot of years when the kids were young for that very reason.

Oh, and I practice what I preach. I stayed at home to bring up Winnie jnr. I started a part-time eveing job when he was 9 and didn't go back to full time work til he was 12.

No punishment ever left a lasting impression on me but I did learn to handle pain. It is a good way to focus someones attention though. I was sitting on a log when I was young and my father smacked me in the head with a 2x4 and said "that was just to get your attention". It did! To this day I get people to know my intentions are serious before wasting too many words. I also learned their is no such thing as crazy because even the craziest become amazing licid when you get thier attention first. I also learned from my Sensei there are two kinds of pain and pain without damage can be ignored. He would carry a split bamboo cane and smack us where our form was not perfect. I'm don't think it is any good as punishment but I do think learning to deal with pain is important and it is a good way to focus attention to learn more important things if used before the teaching begins.
No punishment ever left a lasting impression on me but I did learn to handle pain. It is a good way to focus someones attention though.
I learned that lesson in school in Grade 2. When I was a little 'un, my Dad never had to lay a hand on me, he just had to let me think he was going to and I straightened up pretty quick. My Mom, after my Dad was gone....I just tried to keep any trouble I was in away from home away from her so's not to trouble her and I was the youngest kid so my big brothers used to dump all the chores on me, wasn't much to get in trouble about at home. Until I got big enough to give two of them whuppings, but by then I think she'd pretty much written off the whole works of us. We could be a tad rambunctious.
