Mr. Obama said SWAT teams were being dispatched to the Gulf to investigate oil rigs and said his administration is now working to determine the cause of the disaster.
Y'all know I'm not real smart, so someone help me out. Why send swat teams?
Does the Fed. Gov't know something that we don't?

I "assume" he is talking about a military team ,, But it does sound funny, ??
I really don't get this whole thing, frankly. Haliburton (remember them?) was in the process of cementing the well when it blew. The same thing happened last fall to a rig in Australia and Haliburton had just cemented that hole, too. Cementing the well accounted for 18 of 39 blowouts in the Gulf in the last 14 years. That's a pretty dismal safety record.
You think BP will pick up the government's tab on this?

I was driving back from Tampa today. A guy called in to Mark Levin and said he was on the platform when it blew. He claimed that it was because of an unusually large pocket of natural gas. He also said that you have to realize that at the depths they are drilling, we are talking 30,000 to 40,000 psi. I've got no idea if what he said is accurate, but he seemed to know what he was talking about. Mark Levin did say that he and his staff had checked out this guys credentials, and he was who he said he was. He did not know anything about the reports of SWAT.

I think the big question now is, Why did the Many safe guards fail to close off the well ,,,, Its really going to be a mess,, Horrible event,, The Eco system is going to suffer badly,,, as is the people in that area.

State of emergency has been declared in several counties of Florida. Looks like the Pensacola area will see the effects first (for Florida).
One would think that they would have the technology to drop a mound of heavy objects (boulders, huge concrete blocks.......) on top of the thing to block the direct pressure of the oil and then drop/pump a few million pounds of hydraulic cement over the top to cap it - until they could do something more permanent.
Nice. The a$$holes who decided this oughta' get serious prison time.
"A remote shut-off device used in two other major oil-producing nations as a last-resort safety measure to prevent underwater oil spills is not required in the United States, the Wall Street Journal reports.
The device, known as an acoustic switch, is activated from off-site when a platform is damaged and the primary shut-off system doesnt work. Norwegian companies have used the system on almost all its offshore drills since 1993, and it is effectively required by Norway and Brazil.
Although its not clear that an acoustic switch would have stopped the leak caused by last weeks oil rig explosion in the Gulf of Mexico, BP, which hired the rig, has acknowledged that the primary shut-off systems failed to work, the Journal reports.
Regulators in the United States considered requiring acoustic switches several years ago, but drilling companies were concerned about the cost, and the Minerals Management Service decided they were not necessary. A switch costs about $500,000, and BP estimates that the daily cost of dealing with the Gulf of Mexico spill is $6 million."

I saw on the news yesterday but have not been able to find it on the net that a device called an acoustic switch was supposed to have been installed on the well but it had not been because it's something like $500,000. Apparently, if something happens then an acoustic signal can be transmitted to shut the well down. I'm thinking they are wishing they would have installed 3 of them about right now.
I heard,, That switch would have Fired 2 pistons that would have closed the flow,,, BUT,, The pistons were supposed to fire automatically, The switch was like an over ride,, There were a few Fail safes in place , that,,, um Failed,,
So, why not pay some guy that can hold his breath to just pinch that rascal off?
Simple concept. A "normally closed" plug (piston valve) that has to be powered to stay "open."

Sure I do. Show me where he was criticized for lack of response to a potentially devastating event. I haven't heard the cries for lack of response from FEMA. I haven't heard any criticism of a federal response. If this even had happened five years ago do you honestly believe the coverage would be the same as you are seeing today?

The spill came just weeks after Obama announced plans to open up large areas of the Eastern Seaboard and a part of the Gulf for possible future oil drilling. And it's led to increasing calls to reconsider that initiative by environmentalists and coastal state lawmakers.

Oilpocalypse Now: WSJ reports BP oil disaster may be leaking at rate of 1 million gallons a day
Spill may exceed Exxon Valdez within days -- not weeks
Now the WSJ piece reports it could be even worse than that:
Ian MacDonald, professor of oceanography at Florida State University who specializes in tracking ocean oil seeps from satellite imagery, said there may already be more than 9 million gallons of oil floating in the Gulf now, based on his estimate of a 25,000 barrel-a-day leak rate. Thats compared to 12 million gallons spilled in the Valdez accident.
Interior Department officials said it may take 90 days to cap the leaking well. If the 25,000 barrels a day is accurate and it leaks for 90 days, thats 2.25 million barrels or 94.5 million gallons.

We may not be "the center of the universe", but I'm pretty sure that we are one of the biggest buyers of oil, in the world. Some countries depend on selling oil to survive. Not all of these countries are in the middle-east, either.
Am I making any sense?
