Car Insurance HELP!

I had an accident with my truck. I was at fault. I have full coverage insurance. The Insurance company wants to total my truck. The truck is valued 9.5k the damage has been appraised at over 3k. I know I can get the parts for $550 and do it myself and still need to have the the truck painted. I had refinanced said truck 3 times so I owe the bank about 4k to pay it off. I have considered just with drawing my claim. I have never been in this situation so I am not sure I know all of my options. Seems to me like they want to total it to encourage a new vehicle purchase so that they can then raise my rate and get a higher premium for the newer vehicle. Pleaase only knowledgeable response. I am a bit testy about this after all it is MY truck!

Talk to the insurance company. If you let them total it and then buy it back I think it has to come with a salvage title and I don't think they will insure it again. After all, they've totaled it once.

Cowboy, some insurance companies will total a vehicle and then allow the owner to buy it back for almost nothing. Not sure if this is permitted in your state.

In Mass, the insurance company will give you a salvage title. Once the vehicle is repaired and inspected, it can be reinsured and put back on the road.

Someone is making a pile of money off these things! A friend of mine just had his car damaged and the adjuster argued with the body man about the cost to repair. In the end, the car was totaled. The difference between his estimate and the adjuster was a few thousand dollars! I think you have the option to buy your truck back from the insurance company when they settle..dont know if that will be your best option or not.

My truck was totaled in a hail storm. The insurance co. paid me. I bought it back with a salvage title and still had insurance. I left the motor running outside of one of my loafing spots, stuck thermostat and either blew a freeze plug or cracked the block. I had no trouble selling it, didn't want to pull the motor. My insurance didn't go up, I made out better by taking the money, buying it back and when I had major work, sold it even with the salvage title. I got at least 2 grand more than I would have sold it to begin with. Something to add up and think on, you may do better buying it back, driving it, fixing it and then selling.

Meanwhile get a liability policy somewhere else whilst I deal with the salvage title and I do the repairs then upgrade to full coverage when the repairs are complete...See here is the thing I have to have my truck it is my only driver at the moment. Usually, liability insurance coverage isn't available again until the car is repaired and inspected. Until then, it's just a pile of parts.

I have insured plenty of clunkers with liability...they don't care what it looks like as long as it functions. I am driving this truck to work as it is now. Only take a weekend to repair.

With parts and flat rate labor for repairs, yeah, that's probably totaled by today's standards.

Until the outstanding loan is satisfied the loan company will take out insurance and bill you for it if you switch your coverage to liability only. If you go that route rather than fix it, make sure that your insurance company pays off the loan, or that you do immediately.

Here's the questions I have that would help me decide. Are my insurance rates going to go up? (don't know if another vehicle was involved) If so - does that change if I withdraw my claim? What would they charge for the truck if I got a payoff (including loan company) of 9K?

Yes Crash another vehicle was involved. I hydroplaned and hit a truck parked beside the road. Very little damage to his truck. I am considering withdrawing the claim and have reserved that choice. Deductable is 500 parts are 550 so...yeah I am sure my rates go up. So your thinkin' withdraw the claim take out liability and fix my truck then upgrade to full coverage again...I like it! No salvage title or anything. Really it is what I had top of my list too. Just picking you'ins brains! LOL

My thinking is - if it's still a good truck - fix it, pay it off when you can (the more debt free you can be, the better).

Insurance got involved as soon as I reported it to the police. But it is so minor I doubt it hurts that bad...It was a lifted 1990 ford. I scratched his bumper and knocked his turn signal out....I offered to pay it, but anyway! Mine just might have a real bumper next go round...:sneaky2:

This is the kind of crud that makes me wanna just bugout.... redtape and BS is all it is....I'll resort to a good ole boy mentality if they keep it up. I've fixed less than this overnight without a thought, a long time before I knew what full coverage was! A couple of thoughts. If you air bags popped then that's probably why they want to total it along with the damage. Air bags are expensive. AND...if the bags did pop then you want to replace any belts that were in use. Seat belts are only designed to be used once!!!! Check your owners manual. It will say something like, "If a seat belt is worn during a crash, it must be replaced by the dealer. A belt that has been worn during a crash may not provide the same level of protection in a subsequent crash.”

Just be careful with how you handle the insurance company, and do it quick...and you should be fine. I think the only thing you may have to worry about will be the bank that holds your title...some of them are picky about how the vehicle is fixed and require insurance. That's all stuff your insurance company should be able to answer for you. Be really, crazy nice...and you will get a LOT of information from whomever is helping you on the phone. (I know...it's hard when you're mad.) But they will give you a lot of info, and turn a blind eye to what you're asking if you're polite and "understanding" enough. :innocent:

Been working on the truck all day well since 7 am. My parts finally got here! I had a few issues..but got the fenders and bumper mounted. Then guess what it starts raining. I have some customizing I am doing to the new grill I can do inside! Pics on the way! Sure as heck ain't totaled!
