Reviving the garden

Boy am i tired. I spent a good part of this weekend building a garden. I started a couple of weeks ago but made a lot of progress this weekend. Its in the same location that was used in the past by the people i rent from. But hasent been tilled for a few years. They've been dumping grass clippins there and using the spot to burn tree and bush trimings. Oh and dumping rocks from around the yard. So i had a lot of rocks and partically burnt branches to dell with. As well as a lot of tall grass to burn.
This is what it looked like to start with.

After hacking and digging i managed to get the debris in a pile to burn and later tilled about a third of the garden. this picture is from yesterday after i turned the soil a second time after adding fireplace ash and a bit of manure.

i burned the pile down over two days and tilled the rest of the garden.

Tommorow, after work i'll finish cleaning up the plot and put up the fence and set up the potato cage. I plan to set up a small rain catchment system, we'll see how that goes. I'll post more pics then, i'm tired.

Looks fantastic. I keep telling Mrs. Crash that if food prices keep going up we're tilling the entire yard (kind of small) and planting.

Did you use the ash from the burning?

Ie biochar? Some people swear by it as a garden additive.

Bio -Char is a new term to me. So i looked up biochar and it seams i inadvertently made some. i took all the organic matter in the garden space and burned it. After the flames died down it smoldered for several hours, i then covered it with soil to reduce oxygen getting to it so it wouldn't flare up over night. And it continued to smolder for 10 hours more. in the end it looked like really dry compost. its been snowing all day, but I'll be planting in two weeks. Yee Haa.

OK so biochar is the word of the day.
So im getting antsy to plant. We had two days of snow just two days ago. forcast is for high 60's for the days and high 40's for the nights. Should i plant or wait?

I recommend waiting. It only took 4 days for my sprouts to come up and you know sprouts are quite vulnerable to frost. When the low temps get a little closer to 45 and all frost is expected to be over, plant your stuff then.
Our frost was over with more than a month ago but the rain prevented me planting as early as I'd have liked.
Bugs are already trying to take over so I really gotta get some companion plants going soon. Still waiting for the wild lantana to sprout up so I can transplant some.
One other thing I might mention is that bees LOVE white clover and if you can get some of that growing nearby your garden the bees will help pollinate the flowers and make lots and lots of goodies!
Of course, none of my elders used anything even resembling companion planting and rather employed chemical pesticides. Rain doesn't wash away marigolds and lantana the way it does chemical sprays and dusts, and doesn't pollute our streams and ponds and reservoirs.. And the bees still like the flowers on those plants. It's the stink-bugs, aphids, beetles, and grubs that can't stand them.

French and African marigolds actually release a toxin into the soil that kills nematodes also

Thanks YCC, Thats some good info. I was thinking of planting some flowers around the boader just for pretty so i guess it will be marigolds.
Well today the major operations in the garden are complete. And i couldnt help myself and went ahead and planted 80 onion bulbs and potatoes in a cage and carrot seeds in containers on the deck. Heres the before and after photos taken from the same spot.

It may frost here tonight. We were having great weather but this week looks cold. Too bad. I also have some plants started indoors that are getting huge! I only planted peas and lettuce in the garden so far. Going to check the weather again to see if I want to cover them.

Looking at what you started with Hunter I can understand you being tired. As a gardener myself I also know it's what I call a good tired. Hope the weather breaks for you soon.

thankyou you Oldtrap. And it was the good kind of tired.
Well its may 16 and i planted the garden yesterday. I'm hoping theres no more hard frost. The onions are slready 3 inches and the potatoes are breaking ground. from the seeds i started indoors i planted 2 rows of corn with string beans and 4 winter squash and 4 summer squash planted between them. 4 cucumbers, 2 ace tomatoes, 2 white tomatoes (thanks crash) 2 local tomatoes i saved seeds from, 4 cucumbers, 1 watermelon, 4 eggplant, 80 onions, 10 or so potatoes, 3 blueberry, 4 strawberry, another dozen corn seeds, 4 bell pepper, 4 lettuce, and bought local starters of 1 tomato, some hot peppers and marigolds.
well ,we will see what happens.

Well i ran out of time and picture space. So heres the last pic and at this point the hard work is done and im just left with " puttering in the garden" for the rest of the summer. Whenever that starts? Putting in stakes and supports and such and hopefully enjoying the fruits of my labor. i still have the containers on the deck to enjoy.
Also i'm trying "cridder ridder" to help keep out pest, Again well see how that goes. Racoons have a way a way of knowing when the corn is exactly ripe! Of course theres still the rabbits, squirls, moles, birds and deer.

I was hoping for rain today but it never rains when i want it to.
Well the corn and beans were looking a bit shocked, I did set them out during the day to harden, but? so i watered everything tonight, we will see what happens. Everything else looks ok.

Just thought i would update on the garden.
Some of the plants went too happy about the transplant but they got over it.
The potatoes are going crazy, Ive already started covering them with bark mulch. The tomato plants are doing great. even the blueberry bushes are starting to look like the might survive. I picked my first handful of beans today.:punk: The lettuce, which i thought were about dead have turned around very nicely and the onions are are looking great.

Looking good. Not sure how bad the insect problems are where you are, but do you have enough Marigolds to make a difference?

The pics dont show them but i have about 20 marigolds around the garden. Insects wernt an issue last year, so we will see. I am more worried about racoons. Had one get in my trash last week the only thing he took was corn cobs.

Just updating.
The lettuce is doing great as is almost everything else. Except the blueberries. even the strawberries are showng new growth. no animals have gotten into the garden. I added some capsels of garlic to keep the critters out. so far so good. The weeds have been really bad. This fall i will cover the plot with black plastic to kill them.

The first picture is the potatoes. I tried potatoes in containers last year for the first time. This year after some research i decided to try the cage method. I guess we'll see how well it works in 2 or 3 months. I started with a mix of Manure, potting soil and compost. As the plants grow i've been adding bark mulch to build up around the plants. Inbetween layers of mulch i added a layer of manure hoping the nutreints will wash down and keep feeding the roots. Opening the wire cage will be like an Irish chrimas.

When I planted the marigolds, they were pretty much in the same hole as the plant seeds. It appears that you are using them more as a companion for insects.

But the nematodes are back and got pretty much everything we had planted. My dad had way more planted than he actually wanted, so he let us pick over what made after he
picked. The only thing we had that survived were the new potatoes. We got some of ours this year through little trades.. like labor ;)

So if anyone knows a really inexpensive solution to the nematode problem I have, that does not involve something that will kill my bees, I could use the advice.
Perhaps I should plant marigolds every year? They solved the nematode problem for a while, but not permanently.

Had good luck with shredded oak leaves in a trench under the plants.......

Dig small trench, place oak leaves in the bottom, cover with a little dirt...than plant.....Oak leaves take forever to break down, so you should be good for a couple of years.

I think it has to do with the tannin in the leaves....don't know, but seems to work.....
Gave up on marigolds seems to attract the earwig bugs

Try sun baking your soil before planting. After you get your garden area prepared (and before planting) cover the area with black plastic. Let it bake for a while - killing off a large portion of the nematodes. Turn the soil and repeat.

A flame weeder? I want one. For weed seeds. The problem with traditional weeding is you're turning the soil and possibly bringing more weed seeds up which will just sprout. Flame weeder bakes the first couple inches of soil, like Crash's solarization suggestion (though I think you're supposed to use clear plastic or glass, so that the black soil absorbs the heat, like a greenhouse). It'd not work for me though, the solarization, because my beds are shaded early in the year because the sun is low on the horizon. But both work on the same concept, heat the soil up.

I've also considered just building a fire on top of the soil, that'd add some nice biochar at the same time.

Of course, the downside of both methods is you're not just killing bad things, but good microorganisms as well.

Back in the old days, I used to burn my leaves one your and till them in the next.....till they banned burning in the city.

Never had as many bug/weed problems as well as wilt and other problems as I do now.....

Of course I may have been compounding the problem by having the garden in the same place for 30+ years.

I do rotate crops, add compost and manually pull weeds before they seed....but it seems tougher than it used to......Of course I'm getting older as well....LOL

I don't not crowd plants like I used to, and do use mulch, seems less can be more sometimes.

Good suggestions guys. I have a lot clear plastic that was used to cover roofs. Will a few holes in it be okay? I gotta do something, and with 4 HUGE bee colonies about 50 feet away, I'd rather not use poisons.
