Remington 12C

Recently, a friend contacted me and told me he had just received a Remington 12C that needed a good home. He didn't know anything about the history but it was in rough shape and the stock was broken. "Send it over," I said. Old Timer's need a good home and some TLC. A good clean up and a little furniture patching and she'll be good as new, I thought.

I've spent the whole day on this little guy with a LOT more work still ahead. Lest I sound ungrateful, I'm not. I'm delighted to have received it and this guy will be out on the range before it's over but there are some serious flaws as you will see.

Here's a look at it before I got started. Nice little octagon barrel.

and a look at the busted stock. Yeah, those are nails. The tape has been removed, too. Red Neck engineering is often a marvel to behold but generally not when it comes to furniture. This breaks my heart.

It's serious, serious. There are missing pieces and there is no structural integrity left in the butt. I did a very basic repair to save the pieces but this guy will have to be replaced.

It took over three hours to clean the bore. It was pretty nasty but to my surprise, it cleaned up very well. It has great rifling and is probably a 98% barrel. There is some very minor pitting, about the size of pin points and not very many.

I spent the rest of the day cleaning hardware and reassembling the guy. then the bad, bad news. The barrel at the chamber is pinched. It's not a very good picture but the .22 round will not load. The barrel scrapes the bullet and it jams at the casing.

He has a date with the gunsmith later this week to clean up the barrel. I'm not about to mess with that. I'll let him replace the extractor while he's in there. Then all I'll have to do is replace the furniture and the old guy should be shooting again. More to come on this one but I thought I'd share what I did today.

This should make a great first shooter for the grand kids and a nice little camp gun.

WOW,, lots of work there. But as a labor of love it is well worth it. A good thing that in general the old timers were made mechanicaly sound. Now the fun begins with the furniture. Are you going to try to make it yourself? Once you are done, will make a dandy heirlom

I've found some furniture online for the 12C. I think I'll go that route. I wouldn't mind making it but the forearm has a funny cut to slide over the feed tube and I'm not certain how I would make the grooves in the forearm. I don't have a lathe.

Good for you Rick! I have a soft spot for old, neglected stuff and have saved a few rifles also. I picked a 300 Savage out of a co-workers basement when she bought her new house many years ago. It was a real mess and it probably wasnt worth the money I ended up into it but it works and hunts again and it might have been junked otherwise.

Camp - I told my wife tonight that I'll have more money in this rifle than if I had gone out and bought a used one but it's more than that to me. One of the first questions I asked was, "what's the history?" Sadly, he didn't know it. It would have made the weapon that much more interesting to me. But!!!!! It's history started the day I received it as far as I'm concerned so now we have to build some memories with it.

LOL! My father-in-law has a pile of old push lawnmowers over at his house. Some work, some dont. I have so much fun picking up old mowers from the dump and adding them to his pile! Ooops, I didn't explain myself too well. Over here you can either buy a ready to go stock or a blank that you finish yourself. What I meant to say was are you getting a blank and what finish will you put on the wood? Most stocks I've seen on a new gun here seems to be covered in some bog-awful varnish, that's been applied from a distance with a blocked spraygun! and I can't quite see you putting one like that on it. Last guns I owned had oiled stocks. I'm rambling again. Just interested to know.

I'll get a blank and finish it by hand rubbing it with Tru-Oil. Birchwood Casey makes a Walnut stain for use with Tru-Oil.

nice looking old gun, reminds me of my winchester pump. there is a finish available that replicates the reddish tone finish that was common on the older stocks. if my memory serves i think it goes by the name of plinkington finish. available from dixie gun works and brownells. i have a bottle but the name is rubbed off.

Dropped the 12 C off at the gunsmith's today. He laughed when he saw it. Not because of its appearance but because the barrel was no problem. He said most rim fires will eventually pinch the barrel if you dry fire them. About 10 minutes and he would have it fixed. The extractor was of more concern to him. He could fix it but it might take a couple of days to get parts if he needed them. So all in all, not nearly as big of a problem as I had anticipated, which is really good news. he said the bore was in really good shape.

When you attempt to load a round into the barrel, the barrel scrapes one side of the round shaving a slight flat spot in the bullet. As the case reaches the barrel the round jams and won't slide inside. It's millimeters out of round but enough to prevent the round from loading.

Apparently he has some tool that reshapes the barrel so a .22 fits. By the time I got done with a file you could probably load a .45 in it.

OK, this is the chamber that gets out of round, causing the shaving of the the round to be chambered?

If so , it must have taken quite sometime and a bunch of rounds to do that damage?

the firing pin on a rim fire distorts the edge of the chamber with lots of dry firing. there is a chamber swedge with a t handle that re forms the chamber in order to correct the problem.

Thank you Randy. That's how the gunsmith explained it. You did much better than me. He called a few minutes ago and the barrel is done. He has to order some parts for the extractor.

According to the barrel, this thing was made in October, 1924 so it's probably had LOTS of dry fires.

you're welcome. sometimes a chamber is so bad a chamber liner needs to be made and the old chamber is bored out and the liner is installed. similar to a barrel liner except just the chamber.

Just a follow up on this little guy. I spoke with the smithy today and he said he's replacing the firing pin as well. He's waiting on it to come in.

LOL, I bought a new place in Oct last year and have spent the winter remodeling. Same as this gun, a rebuild shack brought back to life with more in it than a new one would have cost.

That wasn't the point I intended though. The point is that before I have even finished what was there I am adding a workshop to the back so I will have a place for all the projects! I really do need to get the woodworking gear out of the living room! And I gotta' have room to rework the salvaged guns.

Sadly no. He's trying to get a part for the ejector. I guess it's being made in Bum Rush, Egypt because it's taking forever to get it. I will post pics once I get my grubby mits on it again.

Thanks for the up-date, I missed this thread, the first time around, started when I was turkey hunting.

Just to update everyone....the gunsmith finally finished work on the little 12C. He's been waiting on a part to come in. He swedged the barrel and replace the firing pin and a part on the extractor. You won't believe what he charged me.......$37.40. I nearly fell over. His time swedging the barrel was worth that. So I have no complaints with him.

Now I'll start work on the furniture. I'm going to replace the butt and the forearm and give the metal a cleaning. I don't want to remove any of the patina but I think a light cleaning with 0000 steel wool and a little oil will help it. Pics on progress.

Rick I somehow missed this thread when you first started it months ago. It is terrific that you are breathing new life into the little Remington. I have several older guns that I use and love.

If it were me I would stain the wood as dark as possible to match the finish on the old stock and forearm. Just a personal preference, but those old dark stocks just look right on an old weapon.

I agree. I'm thinking about a dark oak stain that should come out about the same as the existing stock. You can see from the pic how bad the stock was broken. I've removed all the nails and repaired the wood and it's actually pretty solid. I'd like to have the grand kids use it so I want to make certain it won't fall apart on them. I'll keep the originals, however, and if the gun does go to another home after I'm long gone the original stocks can go right along with it.

It sounds like we are all kindred spirits when it comes to old stuff. Guns were never made to put in a cabinet and looked at, they were meant to be used and appreciated.

I bought an old .22 rifle from the estate of an old gentleman who took me squirrel hunting as a kid. When I bought it I planned to have it as a keep sake, but after thinking about it a month or so I took it out shot it and it is now one of my favorites. That old gentleman has been dead and gone for over 25 years, but he still gets to go squirrel hunting with me every fall and spring.
