thinking about enlistment again

This is not the first time, but i am beginning to consider service in the US Army.

I am not sure I am qualified. I was told by my recruiter at 17 that I would likely have to lie about my past knee injury, and in light of the physical requirements, I decided I could not be sure I was up to the challenge of IET.

I scored well on the ASVAB back then, and my options for MOS where pretty open, and there are several that I would be happy to pursue.

Currently, I'm sure I can handle the physical demands, provided that I am considered physically fit after disclosing my limitations/concerns. I will not lie to the US Army under any circumstances; that was most of what put me off before.

To those who have served; have you got any advice? One of my motivations, if I am to be honest is that it is becoming harder to find reliable employment. I'm happy to work, and proud to work hard, so I do not feel there is anything wrong with that motivation, and it is not my only one.

Canid,I know the thought process that drives a person to "resort" to enlisting is tough,I have a 36 year old BIL who just left for basic training so that he could get full time insurance on his family ( he is the father of JoJo,the little one who has had brain surgery)he enlisted full time and will now be away from his family leaving my sister to care for their three kids,fighting Josiah's doctor appointments and therapies on her own,but with a psychology degree,he just could not find full time employment that offered insurance that will cover JoJo.


Full disclosure on the past surgery is the only way to go,and it will probably knock you out of enlisting,unless they have eased their requirements,or offer a waiver,even if you do not disclose it,they will probably see the scar while doing a physical.

it's not so much that i and 'resorting' to enlistment, i tried to enlist from the age 17, and have been interested in service in the army to some extent since.

it's a matter of deciding whether it is a good choice for me, and also, concluding whether i am fit for service, in the strict sense, and in the sense that i know i am capable. i don't want any ambiguity about it.

on the subject of the injury, i never had surgery [nor health coverage]. i've basically had to let the knee heal as it would, and live with the consequences.

the result is that my right leg is not half as strong as the left one, and i am more prone to injury, inflamation and pain.

i'm considering the benefits the services have to offer me, certainly, but i would also be proud to serve, and happy to challenge myself. i have not had a strong sense of usefulness in recent years, and the endeavors that give me a sense of purpose in life i have not been able to make a living with.

I have come to almost hate begging for opportunity and I'm beginning to get a bit bitter about it. I would like to do anything that might turn my positive qualities into opportunity, lest I loose them.

I think you may find that the Air Force Basic training is less strenuous than the other services. With limited exceptions the duties in the Air Force are not as physically demanding. And those careers that are more demanding, the physical requirements apply after basic training (granted knowing that you would not apply for those careers). I say this from the retired side of 25 years service in the Air Force. I do not know however the current physical limitations of the service, nor how your current condition would apply. Either way you go, is a good choice, and you will certainly earn your keep :)

Air Force has redone basic and their training. While it is still not as strenuous as the other branches' training it is getting there. USAF BMT has went from 6 weeks to 8.5 weeks and has added H2H combat training as well. They are finally starting to develop BMT.

Also note that the Air Force has stopped active recruiting until Nov. - Dec. They are way above their yearly goal and currently only have few job openings. If you want to do Security Forces, CCT, PJ, SOWT, TACP, or a few others you can get in pretty quick, but other jobs you are looking at a long wait.

Yeah, the air force physical requirements are lower. At any rate, they will probably take you (Army,or other service, maybe not Marines). Most services have lowered their standards and accept a lot of waivers.

Biggest piece of advice, make sure to get the job YOU want. When you go to MEPS, there is this guy that is trying to fill slots. He doesn't care what you want, he just cares that he fills slots. There is a good chance that he will say that the job you want is full and has no openings. That is when you say "That's cool, call me when you have an opening for what I want" and then walk out. Chances are, he will run after you and tell you he just found an opening for what you want. Anyways, don't settle for something you don't want.

I am thinking about going back in. I am thinking of getting a commission in the Air Force Reserve. My wife isn't all that excited, and I have to do it before I turn 34, or no dice. So, I have some thinking to do.

True, you volunteer but there's so much more to it. From what I think I know about you, you'd be perfect on so many levels, it would be fulfilling and lead to many opportunities. You aren't tied down, this is the time to go for it.

Canid.... I can't add much except to tell you to be CAREFUL in the choice of MOS. Unless you plan on retireing from the military, ( I planed to but Govt. Cutbacks I was forced to early out w/o retirement benefits) Pick one ( mos) that will carry over to the civilian world. As much as it hurts to say so ( I spent 18 years army) choose A.F. or navy if you can. Their skills training is better especially in medical,electronics and such. PLUS in a combat/war situation you are less likely to see front lline duty as I did. ( I was S.F.) and the food and housing is a lot better in a war situation. I chose C.A. as a career and after I got out my civilian choice's were almost zero. Just my two cents worth.

USAF have a few jobs you can pick that will give you great degrees for the civilian world. I know Cyber Surety and a few others where you can get an Information Assurance degree, or a degree along those lines, from the Community College of the Air Force.

I am trying to join the USAF and am having a time with it. Before I went into DEP my recruiter gathered all the hopeful's going and said, "The magic word for tomorrow is no. You tell them no on everything or else you will more than likely not get in."

Well I have been in DEP since October waiting on my job. I was told SERE had many jobs and I would be ready to go by March, then April, and then June. And now they are telling me that all the jobs are dried up and it's looking like I will have to re-DEP.

I was told that for this year the USAF has exceeded it's recruiting goal by 400%.

Canid - I think the first thing you need to decide is - not which branch you might want to join, but rather what you want to do. Once you do that, then see which branch will offer you the best opportunity for that. I know you have either worked in, or at least possess a lot of knowledge in the Information Technology field. I'm sure that all branches offer something in that field. Where would you rather be applying those skills? Forward operating station, shore based Air Force installation, aircraft carrier, etc.? Whatever you choose, get it in writing from the recruiter, and make sure it's guaranteed. That is REAL important. I'm pretty biased about jobs in the military because of the path I took. I was 20 and PO'd at my current job. Joined the Navy with a West Coast Guarantee. Found out in Boot Camp that meant west of the Mississippi, not California. Also in boot, I was an E-1 with two years of college under my belt, while there were several E-3's in my Company. Found out then about the advanced programs. Nuclear Power Program is pretty intense with lots of school before your first ship. Advanced Electronics (my path) is the same. Some careers require longer enlistments. Some job specialties pay hefty re-enlistment bonuses (all branches may have that). I started out as a computer tech, was later trained in satellite navigation, radio navigation, inertial navigation, gravity navigation systems. Along the way worked in shipboard anti-terrorism (got to blow things up and shoot a lot), communications security, and a few jobs that I cannot discuss. The background check for my security clearance cost several hundred thousand dollars. I got to handle some really neat things. All in all it was a blast. I will add - then further removed from it, or any experience we tend to remember the good times and avoid the bad. One of my friends is trying to re-enlist. He said it is hard because tons of people are joining due to the economy and they have waiting lists just for the testing.

To go back to your original questions. I am a Sergeant currently serving in Iraq on my second tour. I use to be an Indirect Fire Infantryman and now I serve in Human Resources. Just like any other job there is always going to be ups and downs. Coming from a background of working construction and welding I have never had an easier job and more guaranteed paycheck. The Army makes living easy; they pay my housing, food, clothing, insurance, ect... The harder you work the more rank you gain and the easier it gets.

My advice, choose a job that promotes quickly, even if it's not what you want to do forever. At your first reenlistment you have a choice to reclass to any job you’re qualified for, as long as they are not over strength. Myself joined the Infantry and made Sergeant in 3 years and will be getting my Staff Sergeant this fall with less than 6 years in the Army. I am now reclassing to Human Resources where it is harder to make rank, but is a physically less demanding job and has civilian equivalents. I am also working on finishing my Bachelor's Degree paid for my the Army and my wife is finishing her degree, also paid for by the Military.

As far as your injury, as long as it is healed as does not cause trouble it will not disqualify you. You really need to be committed to be a good Soldier. The Army is weeding out crap as the economy gets worse, but there are endless opportunities from serving.

Some down sides of the service you have to remember. Your family needs to be committed as we are at war and you will deploy. My wife has been through both deployments with me and it can be difficult sometimes. Ironically to help understand things, today is the third birthday I have in Iraq in the 5 years I have been in the Army. Since I was married in Dec '06 I have only been home 17 months and one anniversary. You will be gone training and going to school and sometimes work late or weekends. The good side is that, besides training, we get every weekend, 4-day weekends for holidays, 30 days paid leave yearly, and other random off time. When I get severely ill or injured and have to be out of work, I still get 100% of my pay.

the Navy does not recognize the CHSPE [california highschool proficiency examination], which is usually viewed as a diploma, above a GED.

if i where to get a GED to satisfy the Navy requirements, i would have to get a 50 or higher on the ASVAB [easy as pie], get three references from influential members of the community [not too hard] and have NO history of police involvement other than a moving violation.

i have an open container violation [misdemeanor] on my record. no dice. apparently, i could only join the army, if that is even an option.

I've seen quite a few people - mostly good people - during my 20+ years in the Navy get discharged due to being less than honest on their enlistment paperwork. The thing is - in most cases, if they had been upfront from the start it would have been no big deal. The biggest I saw was failure to disclose prior drug use (not arrest, but use). For the security clearance I had, several of the alphabet agencies interviewed college professors, high school teachers, childhood friends and acquaintances.
