I thought it might be good to actually tell about in detail and show with many pics how one can get to a BOL - bug out location for those who might not know. And even tell and show how a BOL is set up and would function.

My location now is in a small city in northern Colorado and my BOL = survival retreat is about 200 miles to the northwest in Wyoming. That might seem like I am telling too much but I doubt any could find my BOL even though I have told close to where it is. It is covered in deep snow until June and the roads are closed within 7 miles of my BOL from Nov. to June.

So I will begin with a possible scenario that could happen. A biological or chemical attack might be more likely than a nuclear attack but for the sake of showing something more exciting than invisible viruses etc. I will show a possible nuclear attack on some cities. The first attack would be on New York City then other cities. The last one would be a nuke hitting Denver or possibly at NORAD and the military bases south of Denver.

First I will show Denver then explain as the pics come up. Later in this thread, hopefully some will join in with their own pics, even telling about what scenario would cause them to bug out such as a hurricane and how far they would travel etc.

The Denver skyline is beautiful and peaceful now but it is still a major target, people can discuss why that would be if they do not know. Also discuss why any cities near them would be targets.

Hopefully there would be some warning but attacks can happen unexpectedly. New York City is the first city to be attacked>

At the first report of NY city getting hit I am loading my 4x4 truck as fast as possible.

Loading my truck with all the canned food, clothes and other supplies I can obtain quickly. I would also take at least 20 gallons of gas in secure gas cans so that I would not have to stop and buy gas.
Also throwing in the BOB - bug out bag just in case I would not be able to continue using the truck for some reason and would have to hike the rest of the way to the BOL. The packed BOB >

After getting to my BOL - remote survival retreat, I set up camp.

(It may seem like these pics are the same as some previous pics I have posted in another thread, because some are the same but there are many new pics in this thread also. I must show some of the same pics to show how I set up a camp and able to Live on my retreat for months.)

One of the first things I do is set up the tent since it is getting late and I must set up camp before it gets dark.
The 8x8 foot dome tent I use with tarps over it for more protection from heavy rains, hail, snow etc. and a wire fence to help keep out a bear or at least slow him down if he would try to get in >

I truly hope that tanks etc. will never come down my private road. In the winter and if it rains a lot possibly the road would be too soft or difficult for heavy tanks to travel. Although I have seen a bulldozer go down it once.
But to theorize and even fantasize about how to stop tanks I was thinking of using rocks and especially logs. I have some steep hillsides and one is like a 20 plus foot cliff. I was thinking that possibly could have a large stack of logs held by cables and then cut the cables and let the logs fall, rolling down the hill off the cliff and onto tanks etc. Hopefully disabling or even knocking them off the road down the mountain.

Or If I had a lot of help and more cables and could set this up also >

Most probably won't happen but looks like fun?

This all of course is only as a last resort and only used if TEOTWAWKI , a police state, nuclear war etc. happens.

But as some have said such as in Benson's "The Survival Retreat" laying low and being well camoflaged and off the radar is best and avoid conflict if at all possible.

Hope others will also share what they have done, plan to do, how they will get to their BOL and what scenario such as a hurricane or whatever would make them bug out.

Just trying to show that it is possible to make it to a BOL and it will work if one has knowledge and experience. Some can spend much money and have a fancy BOL which can be a nice remote well stocked cabin or just have a camper or tent. Whatever works in various situations. I am showing what works as I have practiced survival on my retreat from June to Nov. for the past ten years.

Any questions, comments or criticism is welcome.
Please remember that a BOL - survival retreat is a place to go to Live, Not die. It's a place that contains the means to survive without outside support, as some of us can show in this thread.

that's some gorgeous country there.

i don't anticipate having to 'bug out' at the first sign of an emergency on general principle, but there may come a situation in which it is the safest response.

it's certainly a good idea to have that option open before you need it, rather than at the last moment. the best options i've got in the event of a long term evacuation are 1.) other cities where i have friends or family or 2.) any of the many areas i trek where the population is a couple of deer, cows and coyotes per square miles.

my sister's got a small place in southern michigan that needs a load of work.

As to your question, I didn't vote. The reason is it's a non-issue to me. If it's right for you then it's right. As for me, I think a BOL is sort of hoping things happen some place else. You have no guarantee that...

1. Your BOL won't be downwind from an event.
2. You'll actually be able to make it there.
3. Someone won't already have taken up residence and be annoyed that you show up.
4. Someone won't have already helped themselves to your supplies (some on here have already had that happen).
5. Wherever you are now isn't the target so you're in fine shape to head to the BOL.
6. You won't need to head in the opposite direction of your BOL should something happen.

If you have a BOL then you get stuck in your head that you HAVE to go THERE. After all, that's your safe place and where your supplies are. It would be hugely difficult to say, "Going there is the wrong thing to do".

If you don't have a BOL then you're pretty much free to do whatever your improvised plan says you need to do.

That's another set of reasons why I'm a Bug In kind of guy.

Again, if it's right for you then it's right. Period.

but a good idea I have one in the outback over time I built a small cabin and it's pretty close to eatable plant's and a buetiful running stream (thats drinkable water)

Thanks for the comments guys. Except the above one. Not exactly sure what you mean skully. IF I am soooo paranoid then I would NOT even tell Anything about my BOL - which I like to call my remote mtn survival retreat and vacation - play and work and private area to practice and Live survival.

I used to be more paranoid and was almost like a hermit for a few years. But I have gotten to know the neighbors with cabins within two miles of my mtn land.

Hope everyone can do what they need and want to do whether bugging in which hope nothing bad happens in your bug in area such as a hurricane, earthquake, martial law etc. etc.

Crashdive, I could have put up almost twice as many pics but many of them are on the first pic thread I made and did not want to post too many of the same pics.

And Rick. I could go point by point why my remote mtn retreat is very good. And is well located etc. etc. I agree that many BOLs may or may not be very good. I like mine for it is a beautiful, well located area with an abundance of water, wood and wildlife.
And I would hate to have to try to find a good area to flee to If necessary, since many many others also will be fleeing cities, possibly even Denver which is the nearest Big city near me. I could also ride a bike or even my dirt bike up to my BOL = retreat for I have two 55 gallon drums packed full of food, locked in my bunker. So I don't Have to take food etc. up except to just have even more, for possible others who might also join me.

Even IF Nothing bad Ever happens it is an excellent vacation spot, even in the winter for excellent skiing and snowshoeing. I just have to make a warmer cabin...

At least one person has tried to get inside my underground shelter/bunker but they only succeeded in bending a piece of metal on the door.

But someday hopefully within a year or two my BOL - retreat will become my Bug In location and permanent place to live. Although in the winter I might be able to live in the closest town - Encampment, Wyoming and the rest of the year on my mtn place.

One more thing is that a guy from Arizona is riding 2 horses with a pack mule from AZ to my mtn retreat and he will most probably be there a little after mid June. He just crossed over the NM - Colorado border a day or so ago from an email I got from him.

Maybe I will tell more about him although he doesn't want too much told, at least while he is traveling with the horses. Not every day or even every decade that I get someone riding a horse to my mtn place.

I do have a couple of questions. If your going in to your BOL during a snow time, what about tracks? That would seen to announce that you were going somewhere with a purpose and a reason. Not hard to make the assumption you had 'stuff' to live on.

The location of the stovepipe in the bunker. Too me it looks really vunerable. Just plug it up, and you'll come out.

Thanks for the questions. I actually like answering questions especially about my mtn retreat.

About snow is that if it snows one day then it snows many times for a couple days or so up there. So If I had to go up there when there is snow and would leave tracks the tracks would be covered fairly quickly. Also the state highway is closed with a locked gate about six miles downhill from my land, from mid Nov. to early June. Thus adding more to the security.
The forest service and even deputies watch that road and fine people or worse If they dare go around the locked gate with a vehicle other than a snowmobile. And snowmobiles almost never go down my mile plus long private road. I have seen a snowmobile stuck in a snowdrift when they got off the groomed trail of the state highway.

And as I have said someday soon I will probably be living up there anyway and I would not leave many if any tracks on the private road especially If the SHTF...

AND if the SHTF I might not use the stovepipe too much if at all, especially if I think there are raiders about. I can seal my deep - up to nine feet deep - bunker. And the temp can stay around fifty degrees without a fire in the woodstove.
I have good thermals, goose down vests, ski coat etc. very warm clothes so unless it is necessary I don't even have a fire going too much. And IF it is way below zero then I truly doubt any raiders will be around either.

And there are a couple dozen nice cabins raiders would break into long before they would even find my bunker which is on the highest ground of the private land. I can see almost all of the private road and can see anyone coming up.

I have tried to think of all possible problems and I think I have solved them. Any other potential problems people can see with my bunker and or retreat please tell, for I Might have not thought of it before..

I live on outskirts of the road system so bugging out for me is from a location similar to your bug out location. Mountains ensure not many will be following and I will have the high ground when they catch me. I don't worry about purchasing BOL, where I am going is not owned and if it gets that bad land titles will mean little. Were I you I would be living at BOL and be figuring to bug out from there. Think how far ahead of the game you would be then.

1 Megaton Surface Blast: Fallout

One of the effects of nuclear weapons detonated on or near the earth’s surface is the resulting radioactive fallout. Immediately after the detonation, a great deal of earth and debris, made radioactive by the blast, is carried high into the atmosphere, forming a mushroom cloud. Wind speed: 15 mph
Wind direction: due east
Time frame: 7 days

3,000 Rem*
Distance: 30 miles
Much more than a lethal dose of radiation. Death can occur within hours of exposure. About 10 years will need to pass before levels of radioactivity in this area drop low enough to be considered safe, by U.S. peacetime standards.

Hmm BOL means Bill of Lading on my world.

Picking one spot and relying on that may be short sighted. Your designated locale may be gone, contaminated or under water for instance. I think mobility and ability to make just about anywhere home is a better thing to prepare for.

Wow, you guys post a lot. I feel like I should respond to each of you but for now just this one, which is actually On topic.

I have also heard of Bill of Lading since I worked in Shipping in a couple different factories.

And I know that a Bug Out Location is not for everyone but in my case at least it is perfect. And as I have said I hope to live up there someday if/when I get enough money to pay the no good property taxes, which are "only" $200 a year but living up there money would be rare to find or earn.

It would have to be an extreme catastrophic event to destroy my BOL - retreat, except for a terrible forest fire which is Possible but hopefully unlikely since it is covered in snow from mid Oct. to mid June. And even August and Sept. can be rainy with the "monsoon" rains. That is what the weather guys call it.

About contamination is it might be possible If Salt Lake City got nuked and the wind was right. Maybe even points on the West Coast but that is mighty far away also.

And about being underwater is my mtn place is at 9,500 feet with good drainage. And is on a mountain side as seen in some of the pics in the beginning of this thread.

AND I could be mobile If necessary and go into the wilderness, go to some other cabins If necessary, even go to town if truly desperate. Saratoga and Encampment are nice little towns that can be self sufficient if necessary with the large ranches etc. surrounding them.

Anyway, it all does not matter what others think for I am trying to do what is necessary and even some of what I want to do. Such as camp, work and even Live as much as possible in and near wilderness.

Hope everyone can do what they need and want to do also. Even come up and visit my mtn place anytime between July 1st and Oct. 1st when I am definitely on it and when it is the most snow free time. Nice vacation area. Two people from PA said they are going to the world's largest rodeo at Cheyenne the end of July and want to come up to my place to visit. I don't charge, just bring your own supplies... :thumbs_up:

Do you have a method of observing the outside of your location; when you are in your bunker?

At least one other curious/unfriendly ? person knows of your bunker. [the one that tried to break in].

So what happens when they patiently wait for you to 'lift the lid and peek out.' I'm not expecting you to detail your safeguards, only that you DO have them.

And thanks for the questions PNW. I like answering questions, at least about my retreat and bunker.

I do have a few methods of observing when inside the bunker - which I really just like to call an underground cabin-shelter.

I do have one window, which I obtained from the dumpster at a factory I worked at 15 years ago. This is supposed to be an unbreakable and hopefully bullet proof window made out of thick clear plastic material. I am not going to shoot at it to test it though. Although hitting it some with a hammer has proven to me that it seems resistant to breaking.

I keep that window covered with plywood since there is heavy snow from Nov. to June up there.

And I also have a periscope and can make more of them. Fairly easy to make the periscope with a long narrow wood box with mirrors at each end.

And there is this large metal pipe, that is about five feet long which looks down towards my private road. On the right is a mask with 2 eyeholes >

I do have other safeguards which I guess I won't tell Everything. Just say some motion detectors and the bunker is in an L shape which from the porthole as well as near this barricaded door I can cover the back trap door - "lid" It may seem like I have told everything but I really have not.

My bug out plans are as layered as gear. This is my snowshoe bug out but I have ski, snow machine, amphibious ATV, boat and vehicles routes established as well with several possible BOL’s. Snowshoes allow me to pull my sleds, my wife pulls one too. Snow shoes come in different sizes to support different weights. The small pair is rated at 200 pounds which is my weight but they are for my wife that weighs 120 but I can use them also. The larger pair is rated to 250 pounds which is my weight plus all I would ever carry. Note the hinged crampons. The bite they offer is a big improvement over conventional snow shoes climbing mountains.

I’m standing in 3 feet of snow and barely sink. This will leave most people and machines behind.

There are no roads behind me so the woods begins 10 feet out my back door. I use obstacles to my advantage and immediately head down my creek to keep it between me and who ever may see me from the other side and I quickly disappear in the woods.

This route has a lot of small trees laid over from weight of snow that have to be navigated around like a maze. With my skis I just go over them but I can’t pull as much weight and my wife is not near the skier I am so skis are mostly for solo travel.

Light footprint is hard to see from any distance and will disappear with next snow or wind. Another advantage of newer shoes is going over tops of bushes sticking out of snow but they can still work into holes and snag just not as bad. When going over them I drag my feet to bend them over before putting weight down eliminating the problem.

I know where I can cross several creeks. When water is low lip develops on sides than can be hard for snow machines to get over but these newer ones have enough power to lift front end. Still in the thick woods they are pretty much limited to trails. Traveling your route you learn things like I had to lighten and balance weight between the two sleds for them to float across creeks.

Off in the distance 25 miles away is Knik Glacier. I have logged 70 hours flying over this area locating routes to Prince William Sound and other features. There is an air route through this area but none of my routes intersect it.

I have several BOL’s established. I will be in mountain canyons that cannot even be flown into except by helicopter and even they would have to get within rifle range to do it. No type of motorized vehicle can get past the glacier or up the mountains that are only 6 miles from my house. My plan is to live in this wasteland that will be close enough for me to observe my house and return if safe or drop into areas rich in fish and game to hunt but returning to the glaciers and canyons to hideout. This is just one of three plans I have developed and explored and this one does not matter who knows it. You can bet if you find me I’ll have the high ground, a 270 and know you're coming. Having lived and worked outside in Alaska all my life and my wife being Eskimo I figure most will freeze to death before they ever get near us.

It reads like a good story and I can see it all in my mind's eye. Every step. In another lifetime I'd love to live in Alaska. I love the snow, the vastness, the solitude, the pure, fierce beauty of it. The best we do now is try to get away to Utah, Colorado and Vermont every chance we get during the colder months.
Haven't tried snow shoeing but you've inspired me here not to put it off any longer. As far as parachute skiing...well it wouldn't be totally out of the question but it would definitely be a last resort for me in a survival type of situation. Because if I hurt myself the options would be limited.
I am a pretty good skier but the two times I fell and broke my shoulder would have been impossible to imagine if I were by myself. The first time it happened I actually was alone off piste for about 1/2hr before I was discovered. (I had sense enough to carry a whistle) The pain was incapacitating and affected every little move beyond the shoulder. I managed to flip myself from facing the ground to facing the sky but I couldn't do much more. I often replay that in my head trying to figure out what I could have done if I were truly alone and not discovered for hours or days.
What would you do?

Benesse, I don't have any good answers to serious injury except to minimize risk. Don't get the wrong idea from that video, I'm no hotdogger. I would pick a safer route. Chutes like that have a glide ratio of 3 to 1 and rather than hug the mountain I would use that glide ratio to get away from mountain and cover as much distance as possible. I would like to mention that I would use a similar plan if I lived in New York City. I live on a road and have access to all the modern conveniences but nothing on the other side of me. You have the same situation with the Atlantic ocean. If I were you I would have a fully stocked Kayak on top of my car at all times ready to go and live off the sea untill I got someplace better.

PS I just read on another post you don't have a car, but storage is available at most marinas or if you are in walking distance a dolly would work and you could just store Kayak tied to the cieling of your apartment. There are also folding and inflatable Kayaks that store easier but would not be as ready for grab and go.

Your area looks good. Probably not nearly as much snow as my mtn country and most probably a lot colder.

I like a BOL - retreat with a bunker though. As I have said before any raiders would go after the 20 plus cabins within 2 miles of my mtn place before they would even find my bunker. And any raiders or thieves would be sorry if they ever did find my mtn place and bunker.

And I have a pair of Canadian military snow shoes which work well and seem indestructible. I should get more expensive snowshoes but these work plenty well. I also should do more cross country skiing.
And people may not believe it since I was born in Colorado but I have never down hill skied. Never been to Aspen, Vail etc. except just driving through. Far too expensive for one thing. And I like cross country skiing and snow shoeing infinitely better than any expensive, crowded ski resort.

The other side of the mountains where I am headed is warmer and lots more snow. The warm air off the water hits the cold air for world record snow falls. I can take the cold but prefer the warmer environment and the water. I'm more at home in coastal areas where I was raised.

If you've spent your life skiing on flimsy cross country skis you would not have much trouble with down hill using heavier stiffer skis. You have much more control. I have threes pairs depending on terrain. Touring cross country, telemark and downhill. I'm not a great skier but with the control of heavier skis I can snowplow all the way down the mountain if I have to. I tell you skis sure have come a long ways compared to the boards I learned on! Climbing skins and crampons can get me to places I never would have skied before. I love the pilot cross country binding and have them on all my skis. The center ridge gives me all the control I need for my level of skiing and being able to just step in and use ski pole to release and step out save a lot of bending over.

Wow lots of thought went into you BOL that's for sure. Sadly I really can't have a BOL until I am able to finally settle in one location. I have been working on a location in Southern Indiana that would work nicely. I only wish it was my land not State owned. If I am ever able to own some land I have several great ideas for security and storage of gear that would work well. I know one thing though, I wouldn't want to try and survive in a cold mountainous region with all that snow.
