Starting last night, it seems that some militia groups may be the Targets. Some Militia sites have "Gone down" due to "servers down". Not much that is being said on the National news agencies. However the local stations are trying to report it. Right now it seems to be just Michigan and Ohio.

I've heard reported (with almost no details) on TV. It is not unsual for small local news agencies to pick up stories like this before the big guys. These types of operations by law enforcement are not broadcast in advance (well, unless......ah heck, nevermind) so the local folks, where the operations are taking place will typically find out first. Once they report things, then others will pick up on the story.

While I am a supporter of the individuals rights, and right to bear arms. If these are in fact militia groups, then they are apparently one of the fringe groups. And they are a real danger. Around here, they are hammering them pretty hard ( I guess it is a matter of local priorities). But I agree with you, both are a real problem, just "stylized" punks. But I do want to make sure that it is understood that with militias, I am referring to the ones that are going over the edge and not the peaceful groups (which seem to be the majority)

Aparantly one of the raids was conducted on a group that calls themselves Hutaree. I will not provide a link (nor should anybody else). They are easy to find on google. I spent some time reading their forum and viewing their videos. If this group is typical of what the feds are targeting - I say well done! What took you so long?

The problem with all of this is that many are dubbing them "tea party members" and using this as a reason to limit gun ownership. Now, don't get me wrong, I HATE government especially BIG government and will die defending our freedoms. However that being said, I in no way condone a planned attack against law enforcement or certain members of congress. It really does get you nowhere. The problem is that this kind of puts a bad light on those of us who understand what it MEANS to be prepared.
Because we gather as a group either on the web or in real life from time to time, discuss current events and own guns and/or knives...does the current Homeland Security staff see US as an "illegal militia?" There are more of these people than you know. I used to post on MySpace on survival topics, mostly self reliance and had over 4000 "friends". Half of them were militia types. I think most of them are gun nuts not true patriots or really interested in topics of survival, it was just part of thier fantasy. It's justification to play with guns for most of them. They will be nuisence making things worse but thier ideas are so unrealistic most are just clowns and pose no serious threat. I had heard about many people that were be investigated for posts they had made and even some arrests. I try to be more selective as to who I associate myself with online these days. I think politcal and religious statements are being screened with the same scrutiny.

There are two people in all of these militia groups. There is the total nutcase that wants to "do something" right now, he's all for breaking the law, making bombs etc. Then there is the government informant who needs to work out a deal with law enforcement because he's dirty. The second guy's job is to get the first guy to "do something". They always nip it in the planning stages as they (allegedly) did here. It's actually a very good tactic for law enforcement to use and has already saved many lives I'm sure. Why anyone would want to be involved with either of these two people is a real mystery to me.

As for their Christian beliefs, speaking as an ordained Baptist Pastor (full disclosure), these guys are on the extreme far fringe. The return of Christ is a mainstream, historic Christian doctrine for which there is a great deal of direct teaching in the New Testament. Views of the end times prophecies differ among the various denominations due to differences in method of interpretation of the Bible but even a casual reading of the Bible will show that it teaches that Christ will return, nobody argues that point. To go from that clear teaching to "I have to lock and load to kill the minions of the anti-Christ" is a real leap. Mac

These days that's the National Guard. The 2nd Amendment is to provide for armed men to be organized to quickly into an Army, period. The militia is the armed and able bodied public banded together to preserve and protect what we hold in common not a small group of like minded individuals banded together to defend what they hold in particular. That would be an armed faction, a gang, organized crime etc.

When a group decides it will be armed to defend it's beliefs, property, or way of life to the disregard of the law or in opposition to it that is rebellion against legitimate authority.

Now when those in authority usurp the laws that limit the conditions and terms of their office they are no longer acting with legal authority. There is no legal authority beyond the will of the people that put them in their elected positions according to law and they have to respect the legal limit of their authority. Now it is an open and healthy point of debate if the Federal government is acting within those limits or has surpassed them. The proper legal channel for that challenge is in the court system and the pushback by the State governments.

This is a two way street. When people cross the line of legality in defense of their particular beliefs they should expect to be prosecuted. When a government usurps the authority of the people or the laws that limit it's scope or power they should expect to be challenged, but that challenge has a legal remedy here that does not involve bloodshed. It may not be an instant remedy but it works well enough. Mac

It is a bit surreal that if you believe in such things as biblical morality, fiscal responsibility, and the preservation of constitutional authority that you can be labeled a radical anti-establishment extremist.

Politics goes in cycles. The real danger is when either right or left grabs the pendulum and ties it off on their side. That's pretty much what happened here in Brazil. They had a hard right military dictatorship for so long that when it lost power the left took over with such force that there is no actual debate between right and left here. The political right in Brazil is actually akin to the moderate democrats in the US. The Center (President Lula -Workers Party) is the moderate communist and the left are the marxist/lenninists.

The article picks what they want from the gospel regarding Jesus and a sword.

I think Jesus was ripe to throw off the yoke of servitude to Rome. He knew that as individuals there was little they could do to fight the Romans. So when wronged or smited by a Roman it was better to turn the other cheek so that they could live and fight another day.

I disagree. We can only look at our own revolution to see where our forefathers stood. After the Boston Massacre and Hancock being harassed for smuggling tea. Hancock in-sighted a riot and tarred and feathered a tax collector.

The reaction to these acts of rebellion were to seize all firearms in Boston and outlaw there possession. That simple decree expedited the revolution. We could not have fought if they were disarmed and we might still be British citizens had the followed those law full orders.

After the war there were some rights that were so fundemental that some thought it incredulous that they even had to be mentioned. One right was the right to say what ANYTHING you want. The other right was to protect yourself and your family and their freedom with adequate force to ensure your success.

I am not supporting these "militias". Merely, respectfully arguing a different view on militias as a whole. Most did not support violence in the revolution. Some romanticized it and agitated it. The Boston Tea Party was a false flag terrorist act. The participants dressed as natives to shift the blame to the natives which in no way could further there agenda than shifting British scrutiny.

Good and bad on both sides mixed to get us where we are and that is how we will get where we are going. Where ever that may be.

Rick, I was referring to actions that would be called treasonous or terrorists and how the possession of arms and forming of militias was necessary to our forefathers liberty from perceived tyranny.

I didn't get into the argument of whether or not we were entitled to protections under the English Bill of Rights because I was trying to illustrate how arms and militias played a role in overthrowing the government and not defending it in the American Revolution and how many of our forefathers felt that we must remember that purpose should the need arise again.

Most did not even want a standing army as it could be used against the free people to support and for the purposes of tyranny. One of the many reasons I don't care for Hamilton!

I am comfortable that :his story and the truth are the most accurate and "their story" will be the stuff of fables, I always found that when the rats are run to ground they are most entertaining.

You should have seen "back in the day". Dark suit (preferably dark blue), white shirt, solid color tie (no patterns allowed), GI haircut and shiny shoes. I was a maverick though I always had a GI cut moustache. I could blend in anywhere :)

Oly, I think that if you belong to any subversive group you should expect as part of the deal that some policing organization is also part of your group. At the very least they are trying to be a part of it once you place yourself on the radar screen. It's just part of the intelligence gather apparatus and we're lucky to have men and women will to do such dangerous stuff. Just my .01 ( only a penny now because of inflation).

These people are going to get their day in court and we all get to see what evidence the government has and where they got it.

Some facts...

1. They are innocent until proven guilty according to the law.

2. They are guilty right-wing Christian nutcases according to the left leaning press because that stirs up controversy and sells ad space.

3. The true concept of the militia is the body of the people armed and willing to defend what they hold in common, not a small band of people armed to defend or propagate what they hold in particular. Look at the stated aims of this group according to their own website, to fight the minions of the anti-Christ. This in no way shape or form is the unorganized militia according to the Constitution, they are an armed faction with their own agenda not an expression of "We the People".

4. The true unorganized militia numbers in the multiple millions and would be impossible to suppress. The various "militia groups" number in the few hundreds to thousands and will ALWAYS be the objects of scrutiny by law enforcement because some of them really are nutcases. This is a legitimate function of law enforcement and you really do want it that way.

5. There are legal and non-violent channels to petition the government for redress of grievances that are still open to the people. Over-reaching by the Federal power is countered by the power of the States or the courts. The people have the power to vote over-reaching federal representatives out of office.

6. If the actual unorganized militia ever does rush to arms you won't have to wonder if it is happening or which side you are on. Take a look at the rest of the world for examples of things that would cause this. Has the federal government dissolved a state legislature? Has the Executive branch dismissed Congress or the Supreme Court? Has someone been declared president for life, declared martial law, and abolished the vote? That is the stuff true historic rebellions are made of, not the passage of unpopular legislation, get real.

7. This current situation is not a government sweep of the left rounding up the right. It is a case against a very tiny group of people for which the government thinks it has a case. Give it a few months.
