here's a thread that i will be writeing in alot, seems there is allot for me to learn here at the homestead, funny when i was in the city i felt like a country boy, now out here i realize how much i need to learn.
let's keep this thread open minded i want every one to feel welcome to share no matter how small or seemingly simple, i want no one to feel intimidated by sharing.
i learned today.
1-i should always keep my padlocks covered with leather could't open up the trailer door frozen shut.
2- i watched the snow drifts on the car windshield and learned that the wind blows east to west so i shoveled the driveway to the west so the snow wouldn't blow over where i just shoveled important when the driveway is 250' long and no snow blower.
3 -i learned what a cedar tree looked like, had built with it but never gave it much thought, now i have some in my wood pile and sure smells nice when burning figure to find more on the property and harvest it.
i hope to post lot's on this thread and to learn from you all also.
always be prepared..
I learned what a fuzzstick is and how to make one.
I leaned I don't want to live where wareagle does. Snow already?
I learned that I'm going to read the rest of your posts on "what I learned today."

1.) I learned that when I moved to the remote back country, I was really alone. While it is great, for the most part, there are those times that "cabin fever" sets in. While I do many things, outdoor chores, activities, wildlife sightseeing, etc. on a daily basis, I do wish that I had someone to share the beauty and enjoyment that I have and see in my life everyday. ;)
2.) I learned that there are a great bunch of people on this forum that are very knowledgeable and insightful, and that I enjoy seeing the new questions and comments posted here every time I sign on! :D

what i have come to realize is that it is easy to sit here at the computer and type in always be prepared, but living out here now it can be a true matter of survival, in the city i do not worry about sliding off the road and stranding myself, luckily my wife was with me this morning and i was able to push the van back on the road, then i pointed out the difference between my van and her car, i asked where she would put the sand under her car, my van was under the passanger rear wheel then taught her that her car is front wheel drive so to put under the front wheels, snow plows will not be around my area for a while so it's a snow day, time for me and my dog to go snow shoeing, if i can open the lock to the trailer, let's see what i can learn or observe today.
always be prepared..
You got little snowshoes for the dog? LMAO.

me and the mutt just came back from snowshoeing out back. we have gotten about 18" of snow this week, made for some fun walking, here's what i learned today,
1- the cedar trees i looked up in my book yesterday, i've got lots of them in the bush, the deer tracks let right into the cedar stand, good place to hang out. it felt good to be able to identify the cedar, usually i would have said it's some kind of pine tree or at least an evergreen which it is but now i know which kind.
2- when walking with snow shoes and come across a tree thats down on the path side step over it, makes it easier.
3- mistake i made today, was when i got home i was soaking wet with sweat, even at the slow pace i was walking was not the best idea to heat up that much, now in my mind i think i am only a short distance from the house, but in those shoes i could easily slip and break an ankle or leg then would have to wait for rescue could possibly become hypo thermic when not moving and start to cool down, need to work on that..
always be prepared..
Wareagle. Layers, my friend. Dress in layers that can be removed. Sit down on that tree that's in the path and rest. Explain to the dog what kind of tree you found. Cool down. Oh, yea. Avoid any yellow snow in his vicinity unless you know Bear (that story is never going to die, is it?).

i always dress in layers, just with the wind i left then on, i should have slowed my pace, except that my dog is a real slave driver..

1) The city is just as if not more dangerous than the wilderness because of all the rusles you must follow anywhere you go... otherwise you may get hurt and go to the hospital. In the wilderness you have less dependancy on others to do things correctly so they do not hurt somebody.... you only rely on yourself to make sure you do not get hurt.
2) that i am always dehydrated and i need to drink more water
i recently started studying the clouds and the weather in general, keeping records of every days heat, humidity, cloud cover, cloud type and shape, where he wind is coming from......this is so i do nnot need to read the paper for wht the weather is going to be like in the next few days....you guys and gals whould do this too, that way when you are in the wild you know what the weather will be like in the next two or three days in your area.

very cold night tonight with a bit of wind, started the fire in the wood stove then a couple of minutes later lots of smoke pouring out of the store, didn't warm up the stove pipe, reminded to start the draft by lighting a piece of paper so the smoke would follow the draft..

I learned that my wife thinks I am crazy for all this survival preparedness.....so you all must be crazy too.
Would have been there for ya with that one if I could have been bro, it's a bitter lesson that there's cold air forcing it's way down that chimney. I was in a drill camp years ago and had this geologist who I really didn't like. We had those little black airtight stoves in these really nice log cabins. I used to split a little pile of kindling before I went to bed at night and first thing in the morning I'd spray it with naptha, throw it in the stove, close the damper on the flue and light a piece of paper and drop it in the stove ....whoosh...instant fire, stove would jump. I could see from my cabin window through to his and every morning he'd be standing over that stove with smoke billowing up at him....I never told him. Like I said...really didn't like the guy.

Strike anywhere matches can be found at; Wal-Mart, Fred Meyer (out west), Meijer Thrifty Acres (out east), and a lot of grocery stores.
I buy up 2 or 3 cases of them when I visit my family for the holidays and take them back with me.
As crazy at it sounds, Wally World didn't have them. I hit two grocery stores and no luck. All safety matches. Strike on the box type. I have a couple of other places to try today. I'm sure I'll find them, I just have to keep looking.
Thanks for the info. !

If you don't find them let me know as we have a chain store called "Farm King" that sells them for a buck a box. We can figure out a way to get some to you. Nobody else has them around here, go figure.

Farm & Fleet is a lot like Farm King, so you might find the S.A. matches there. Wal-Mart sells parafin with their canning supplies and over in the food section. Ask an Associate.
I hit Tractor Supply no luck. I went out on the web and it looks like everyone is complaining about not being able to find them. Get this. It turns out some states have outlawed their sale because they are an ingredient in some home made bomb on the internet. Heathens! I sent Blue Diamond (which is now Jarden Home Brands) an email. We'll see what they say. I may have to start stocking up on 'em. I did find a web site for making your own matches, though.

Rick,
You can buy online "NATO Survival Matches - 25 Matches that are Wind/Waterproof and come in a small Waterproof case. As I have posted in my Survival Kit, I always carry them. These matches are tiny flares! If you light them, then drop them in water, they will still burn like a flair for 12 seconds. A strong wind can't even blow them out! Yes they're wooden...

Thanks. I may have to go to that or storm matches. I was wanting to make my own by waxing them. I hit three more places today and still no luck. I'll see what the manufacturer has to say.

Striking repartee, there Trax. (get it? match. striking. I slay myself). Matchless indeed. Multiple stops bringing the total to more places than I have fingers hence more than I can count. I have placed numerous calls to Jarden Home Products (slamming them very hard here) owners of Diamond Match (still slamming them). Bad phone system that hangs up on their customers. Don't respond to email, either. So much for excellent customer service. I guess I'll have to buy from another company. Oh, wait. There isn't one. (pouting)

Are you sure about the Haz-mat? All these "Survival" outlets sell & ship matches all over the place and don't charge anything more than minimal shipping & handling. Also I recently order "Flash paper" which is specially treated paper used by magicians; the slightest spark and "POOF", it's gone in a flash. Nothing about "Haz-mat" charges. Any way, I just picked up several boxes of the "Strike Anywhere" type at "Farm King" at $1.30" per box of 250 matches. Let me know if'n ya need any! what i learned today is i dislike going to my wifes christmas party a bunch of stuffy vets eating some high class crap i can't pronounce or eat, only benefit is one of the vets husband is a farmer so i always pick up useful info from him, such as i get my brown eggs from dan so i asked him how long eggs are good for, he tells me that most of the eggs that ppl buy at the store are usually a couple of months old by the time you purchase them, whick leads me into the conversaton about due dates and the mentall factor of seeing them, also dan does his own honey says that store bought stuff is boiled thus eliminating most of the nutrients, huh the things ya learn..

AAHH but isn't it the truth!
Eggs will keep a long time without refrigeration by dipping them in liquid glass and a long time is may be up to 6 months.
Mother Earth News conducted a study back in 1977 on just how long eggs would last. Here are the results of their study:
Conclusions:
At the end of seven months (all of our experiment that was finished and processed at the time this issue went to press), then, we had drawn these conclusions about our egg preservation experiment:
[1] Unwashed, fertile homestead eggs seem to store much better than washed, unfertile agribiz eggs. Why? Probably for the simple reason that they're unwashed ... and not because they're fertile. Hen fruit, as it comes from the chicken, is coated with a light layer of a natural sealing agent called "bloom". And, while a good wash may make a batch of eggs look more attractive, it also removes this natural protective coating ... leaving the eggs more subject to aging and attack by the air and bacteria in the air.
[2] The very best way we've found to stash eggs away for long-term storage is in a sealed container at a temperature of 35 to 40F. Their whites may become somewhat runny looking over a period of time, buteven after seven monthsthe cackleberries stored in this manner smell good, taste good, have a good texture, andin shortseem "almost fresh".
[3] The widely touted idea of covering eggs with a solution of one part waterglass (sodium silicate) mixed with nine parts of boiled and cooled water does indeed seem to work better than any other "room temperature" preservation method we tried. If our experiences are any indication, though, it's really good for only about five months and is a distant second to controlled refrigeration.
Another point: As good as some eggs kept in waterglass were, almost every batch we opened seemed to contain one real stinker. Which makes it a superior idea to open any waterglassed egg (or any egg, for that matter) separately into a cup ... where it may be inspected before pouring it into a skillet, pan, or dish with other food.
[4] Unwashed, fertile eggs submerged in a solution of 16 parts water/2 parts lime/1 part salt, packed in lard, and coated with lard seem to keep at room temperature almost as well as unwashed fertile eggs that have been given the waterglass treatment. Washed, unfertile eggs do not.
[5] Unwashed, fertile eggs packed in dry sand or coated with vaseline and stored at room temperature keep a little longer-but not much-than unwashed fertile eggs that are just left lying out at room temperature. Washed, unfertile eggs exhibit the same characteristics ... with all storage times running a few days less across the board.
[6] Forget packing any kind of eggs in wet sand or sawdust! Our tests show that such methods of "preservation" can turn eggs rotten within a month and are worse than doing nothing at all to the hen fruit.
Nell - I think they're from Indiana, too. They call them cackle berries!!

What I learned today. Back on Strike Anywhere matches. I hammered them last week so now I have to give them some praise.
I called Jarden Home Brands today, they own Diamond Matches, and low and behold reached the VP of Sales. It seems they moved to a new building and the phones were messed up last week. They are still not straightened out because all the customer calls are going to him. Anywhoooo. We spoke for a few minutes and he told me that most places won't carry them because of liability. Wally World has stopped because they average two ignitions per year across the U.S. In other words, on average, two boxes per year fall off the shelf somewhere in one of their stores or someone drops the boxes and the matches ignite. If your Wally World has them it is remaining stock so you might want to snatch up some.
Another interesting fact he shared with me is the box is designed so if they do self ignite that can't draw oxygen so only a few will actually ignite and the smoke smothers the rest. Didn't know that.
He said Target still carries them. Although some stores may choose not to. He also said it was very obvious there was a real need for strike anywhere matches and he was going to talk to his internet people and see if they couldn't set it up to sell them direct. He told me to try Target and if I didn't have any success to call him back and he would see to it that they got some to me.
That's pretty good customer service in my book. So I have to eat a little crow (a dash of garlic, salt and pepper, sliced onion. Fry until brown and onions are tender.)

I am a wilderness junkie, thank you very much. And I do go to work everyday, well I do get off days. Soooooo what does that mean? Let me tell you. It means I work Mon-Fri and hit the forests three out of four weekends a month and twice during the week and on vaction I spend no less than two weeks in the forests, river bottoms, mountains, and spend several other weeks a year on treks with my son and group.

I spent a couple of hours out mid morning. Temp was 22 with a stiff breeze from the North and a wind chill of about 8. We received a dusting of dry snow overnight. Just enough to quieten things down. I passed by a 40 foot, flat bottomed ravine with a small brook in the bottom and there, at the bottom, stood three nice doe sheltered out of the wind. We just stood and stared at each other for a few minutes before I continued on. Of course, they scampered when I turned to walk away so I watched them bound down the ravine and around a bend. Squirrels were everywhere. What a great way to start a new year!

what i learned the last two weeks is that you can never be prepared enough, with a sudden back injury it has really slowed me up from what i had planned for my two weeks off, some things i had put of thinking i would have plenty of time to do, so i spent most of my time moving very slow couldn't work on my house that i'm trying to sell or work on the barn at the new place which is slowing our plans up, need to strech more this year may be some more sit ups to strenghten my core help prevent this from happening in a cricial moment. funny thing is everyone keeps telling the wife that they can't picture me helpless at 6' 4" 230lbs full of tattos they are used to me being the pillar of strenght kind of funny how ppl choose to see you.

I have learned and made two working bow and drill set's that (knock on wood) have produced a coal each time I have tried , used an old ceder fence post . Next ambition : a working fire plow set , and to practice more in incliment weather.

Ok will do,LOL hey in a situation where you couldnt get gasoline for farm equipment, they do excellent feild work, kinda getting used to seeing the Amish turn the ground over for the garden around here now.

I know me too,I have met a few of them around here, the women dont talk much (oops there goes my chance of getting adopted by them,LOL!) THey are a real friendly bunch of people though, most of my neighbors are Amish since we moved last winter.

A few of them actually are using gasoline powered engines here now,and that just seems sooo odd to me,plus if you get a "job" driving them around town or to other counties, they pay very well.
We had a large group of Menonites move in just north of us when we lived in Illinois. I don't recall what they purchased but seems like 3,000 acres or so. Somewhere around there. I saw them quite regularly and, other than their dress, saw no difference in them than anyone else. They drove anything and everything and worked the fields with tractors just like regular folks.

What I learned today:
- how light weight my new MBD backfly alcohol stove is
- freezer bag cooking is really a light weight way to go, and very delicious meals you can make yourself.
- I hate green tea... did like the lemon green tea though
- and Sarge is secretly wearing a Ranger Rick survival necklace...:D

I know I have slowed way down as far as driving is concerned ,because there is nothing sicker than topping a hill and coming THAT close to hitting the back of a wagon full of kids:eek:
You might as well get a Nalgene bottle if you going to eat all those chemicals from the freezer bag. I do think you're right about Sarge. I think he got one for Christmas.:D

You might as well get a Nalgene bottle if you going to eat all those chemicals from the freezer bag.
Ziploc and Naglene has the same FAQ's about chemicals and answered them same way. What I get from what I read that some companies was using a PVC plastic that cause problems when heated. Now Glad freezer bag and Wal-mart Value freezer bags say not to use with hot liquids or microwave. Mainly it may cause leaks.

Now hear this! Zip-Lock now makes a bag called the "Zip-Lock Steam" bag for use in the Micro-wave; at a bit more $ of course!(I'll be trying it out with the boiling water method) Here's the thing, whenever you come up with a $ saving idea you're putting some company at financial risk by finding a cheaper alternative to what they're selling so naturally there's going to be some "bad press" put out to keep people from doing that! You have to decide if you're going to believe it or not!

I learned that I need to get a new chainsaw. My little Poulan 16" is fine for smaller projects, but I think it's time to move on up. Looking at a Stihl 390.
I'd recommend any Stihl or Husqvarna or Jonsered. Those Scandinavian folks seem to know a thing or two about power saws. (I think they all come from either Sweden or Denmark)

unfortunately, my weather forecasting abilities (just by looking up) are limited to:
If it is clear skies overnight (at least in the winter), it is going to get COLDER than if it were completely overcast.

Don't go picking wild blackberries with shorts on,OUCH!
