The other post today about the sustainability of a retreat location being more important than it's remoteness is good also. That the ability to grow food was more important than the safety of remote isolation.

I was hoping for a profound discussion about the doctors post about, peoples feeling of entitlement. I really was hoping someone could build a compelling case for his being WRONG. We could start another thread, or I could have a drinkie'poo.

No profoundity (yeah, I know it's not a word) here, but I think that the mindset of most here would probably agree that there are those (too many of those actually) that have an entitlement mentality. I tend to stay away from those discussions here because I feel the root cause of that feeling of entitlement is being fostered by a political class that wants to buy votes and remain in power as the ruling class. The end result is a society that is largely dependent on others for their survival.

I just read it.

I have mixed emotions with regard to the doctor's post. I've seen the entitlement in action with 20 somethings that thought an education meant being given a grade and a degree. What a shock to discover both must be earned. But I saw it from lower income suburbanites that probably don't have a clue how most food arrives at the store.

On the other hand, I can show you an awful lot of 20 somethings that are as far removed from entitlement as west coast is to east coast. Many are serving around the world tonight. Some on peaceful missions. Some on not so peaceful ones. I see them going to work every morning and buying homes and raising families.

So I think entitlement has a lot more to do with where you come from than where your head is at.

As for looting, I have no intention of asking the looter if they care to join me in a round of Kumbaya. If you haven't learned stealing is wrong by now then the lesson you are about to learn is going to be a tough one.

The Doc. makes some good points when he stays on topic long enough.
Generally he seems to be all over the place and in some instances he exaggerates using anecdotal personal observations because he knows his audience will buy it. (btw. I too, am his audience!)

Here are a few points I take issue with:
He says...

1. "About a year ago I sat in a restaurant and heard a young lady (20-something) exclaim to her friend and the server, Oh my God, this chicken has bones in it! That is so gross! Quite obviously, this typical young lady has lived her entire life eating only boneless, skinless chicken breasts or chicken nuggets and is so removed from the source of her meal that being confronted with the reality of chicken, she was appalled. Today, a majority of our population has never experienced life without these comforts. They have no frame of reference to anything different."
I am just not buying this. Yes, there are people out there who might be clueless but a majority?! Not in my experience, not where I live--the supposed epicenter of what he is talking about.

2. "My fear is that the entitled attitude is not only common, but it is the prevailing mindset today. It will not even occur to these thousands of normally good and law-abiding people that taking your hard earned larder is wrong. After all, its an emergency and my family and I are hungry.
We know that desperate times will bring out the worst in people regardless of who they are or where they live. This is not exactly a novel insight. History has taught us that.

3. "As I consider the possibilities in a post-TEOTWAWKI scenario, I can see where looting could fall into two distinct categories. The first group is the despicable where stealing is done for personal gain. They are anarchy in action, they destroy community, and spread destruction. For that group I would agree that Rule .308 applies. But its this second group that gives me trouble. These are the folks that just dont have a clue. They steal to survive and to protect their loved ones. If I was in their situation I dont know what I would do, but I do know that I would not sit idly by watching my family starve".
Huh? Sounds like he is contradicting himself.

However, I relate to:
"...you understand that your comfort, your safety, and your assets are earned and not deserved. If you are a reader than you understand and agree with the concepts of preparations that you make thereby earning your comfort".

I've actually rarely seen this. I have often seen just the opposite in fact. Having worked the aftermath of a few tornadoes and a couple of floods I've seen people band together. It actually brought out the best in people. There were some oddballs that decided to price gouge but that was the extent of it and they were dealt with pretty quickly and hardly anyone did business with them when the event was over. Some even went out of business because of it.

You can look at similar recent events and see the same thing. 911 and Katrina are good examples. There were a minority of folks that took advantage of the situation and others. Sadly, they garnered a lot of the press. However, most folks banded together and helped one another.

I agree with what you're saying. I think hardship exaggerates traits. It brings out the good in good people, and brings out the bad in bad people. Most people are good, but we must be prepared to deal with the rare bad person/people.

I also wonder what will happen to people, in the event of long term hardships. What will happen when people band together and share their resources, and then the groups resources run out.

The Thames froze over and the British held Ice Fairs on it. During the same time, New York Harbor froze solid and people could walk from Manhattan to Staten Island. This was the same time the Norse colonies in Greenland starved out. People still banded together. You can find "leagues" formed by Native Americans. Groups designed to work together to hunt game and take advantage of natural foods. While whites shared meager crops with their neighbors.

Later, in 1816, The Year Without a Summer, people again banded together to try and ensure everyone was fed. One farmer, Reuben Whitten from Ashland, New Hampshire is credited with saving many of his neighbors by sharing some 40 bushels of wheat his farm was able to produce.

We see constant visions of Mad Max but history tells us a much different story.

I feel there is a distinction between tough, challenging times and TEOTWAWKI; and a distinction between how people might generally behave in each.
Now we might quibble over what constitutes TEOTWAWKI but I'll hazard a guess that most of us haven't experienced it, at least not the in the way Rawls means it.
I remember starting a thread here last year along the lines of "how far would you go in order to survive and ensure your loved ones survived. Some people could imagine and answer trithfully and a few just didn't want to deal in hypotheticals.
Well, this is a hypothetical where legal and moral lines often blur under extreme duress. And each one of us tends to think about it through our own prism of life experiences and personal convictions.
Needless to say, it's a very subjective topic.
Now, what do you think Sourdough since you were looking for a discussion and I bit.:)

It completely altered the foods that humans eat, eliminated some from their environment completely, and developed a new religion. That's pretty powerful EOTW stuff and has nothing to do with my opinion or the prism I look through. Just sayin'....

The big question though:
Is the human nature fundamentally the same and unchanged since the beginning of our sentient life or is there something about us today that makes the equation new and different?
I honestly don't know for sure.

This is the part of the doctors essay that hit hard and true for me, and makes me nervous. There are very few people near me; however of the those few, more than 40% are "Trust'Children" ($50,K to $100,K per year) and another 20% are 20'somethings still living at home on $300.00 per week allowance. Some are very well educated with Masters degrees, but they don't need to work, so they are ski bums, snow board bums, white water bums, and a few just bums, rich bums but bums just the same.

They may be educated, but they can't and won't operate a snow shovel to dig their vehicle out. They are not smart enough or to lazy to park at the start of their driveway so they only have to shovel 4' distance of snow to the main road, no they park 300' in then need help getting out.

OK, that covers 60%, another 20% are heavy dopers or on welfare, or faked back injury insurance scammers, who steal anything not locked. I truly think 80% of my community requires some one else to take care of them today.

I have put up "Free Firewood" signs up around town, just come get it. They say, "I would like it if you will deliver it for free, and stack it neatly". They act like noble entitled aristocrats.

I know so many people my age who should be retired, but have a houseful of 40'something children and 20'something grandchildren.

WHO the HELL is Working........Who the Hell even knows what WORK IS.

If the SHTF there will be a lot of people (maybe 80%) expecting someone to take care of them.

I don't mind helping......but.

Frankly, I am surprised that you'd have folks like that where you are.
I was under the impression that most people in your neck of the woods are tough, self-reliant and far from free-loading off the parents.
Seems like there's no refuge from ne'er do wells wherever you are.
In my fantasies I'd like to sit on 300 acres divided among 20-50 like minded families where you can do your own thing 99.9% of the time, always knowing in the back of your mind that you are among friends who will look out for you as you would for them.

I wouldn't go as far as Rawls (it's just not me) but I certainly would like to live among people I like and respect.

In a way, all it is, is a private, exclusive club on a larger scale.
Not a far fetched idea, but certainly a unique one based on our shared interests and values.
It's not a retreat...it's not a commune...it's not anything you ever heard about.
It's like living in a neighborhood (much like the one you live in now) where ALL you neighbors share your core values, but still appreciate and welcome differences that aren't deal-breaking.(core)
You'd still go to work, raise a family, do whatever you're doing now, BUT you'd just know that you're surrounded by 20+ families that you care about and they care about you.
It's different, but not impossible.

If I could find this, I'd move in a millisecond.

Sourdough - I think in our quest to provide our children a better life we have moved beyond "responsibility". I understand what you are saying. It's not isolated to your area by any means. I don't see it as anything other than a minority where I live fortunately. I do see it as a socio-economic factor more so than anything else. They appear on the low end and the high end of the scale. The middle class still seems to be working. I guess that cycle has always been there to some degree. But it does seem to be a fast growing trend. I won't go into much more of a discussion because religion is banned.

Down here the dynamics of the exodus are different. After getting hit by two hurricanes in a row. My sister decided they would bug out if any were on track to her area again.

It took her like like 12 hours to go from Port St Lucie to Orlando. Normally an 1 1/2 hour drive. I think bugging out here is a different animal. I'll be cutting locks and running through WMAs, Indian Land and what ever. If I have to bug out.

If an EMP is the problem and I don't believe the doom sayer EMP scenario. But, if an EMP hit the grid. I still have a very viable shelter. More then ample water (I have a canal about 200' across in the back yard).

I nuclear strike might make a bug out a good idea. An infectious disease scenario seems more of a bug in deal. Really deadly viruses usually run a quick course. Traveling usually facilitate the spread of the disease.
