View Full Version : Multitasking = not doing anything well?

In this day and age when everyone seems to be trying to do more things all at the same time, I have to wonder what we have giving up in the trade.
People are talking on the phone and driving, doing neither 100% well. They are texting while in conversation with others. Watching TV while trying to visit with guests.
Mothers are eating and driving while the Kids eat happy meals watching videos in the back of a minivan.
I may be showing my age, or obsolescence here, but I was taught to concentrate on what I’m doing.
If you are concentrating on your task, you start to think of the collateral aspects of your task. You know, like consequences of a mistake, ways to do improve the process, and how to do a better job.
Let’s take parenting for example. Has any one read the headlines about needing to redesign the hotdog? It’s just not safe anymore.
OR, maybe the parents are not thinking about what they are throwing in front of junior to eat, and the consequences of not cutting it up for them. Maybe Junior needs to be old enough to know how to chew their food before they get a whole hot dog, and parents should be able to know when that is. … If they were paying attention and thinking about consequences.
I see zombie like people in every public place. Too busy talking or texting on the cell phone to notice anything, or anyone else around them. It is no wonder we need to be looked out for like children. Our attention span seems to be getting too short for a long-term, in-depth thoughts. We are loosing our ability to concentrate on the task, or life in front of us.
Maybe that is what we all find so appealing about bush craft. One task at a time, think about it, and do it well, or suffer consequence. There is great satisfaction in doing something to the best of your ability. I wish the concept were not slipping from our average population so easily.

Mc-g, you are probably correct on the multitasking, seem the more "labor saving stuff", we have only tends to lead us astray from actually doing anything.
I watch the hot dog thing, as well.
Darwin's Theory has already been threatened by 911, now it appears any attempt at Natural Selection will be legislated out of existence.
(small time out for a personal rant), If your kid is too stupid to eat a hot dog, with out dieing and needs the government to protect him, probably doesn't deserve to live anyway

I agree with absolutely everything you've said McG. My old boss could never work out how I managed to finish in 2hrs what took my predecessor all afternoon. Easy, concentrate on one thing at a time and be organised!
BTW I can't believe the hotdog thing!

Kind of my experience at my last job. My boss told me when he hired me that he wanted me to do ONE thing, SELL!, and not get sidetracked from selling. Then he proceeded to get mad at me when I wouldn't so his little projects for him. Then he wanted me to handle technical support, construction management, product development, and design. Then I got laid-off because my sales numbers were down. :wacko: I will have to say though, getting laid-off is probably one of the best things that could have happened. It helped to get me my degree.

The thing is, most of the time people already do a pretty good job of culling themselves. Solomon said "Fools die for want of wisdom." (Proverbs 10:21) Often enough, that ends up being literal.

I think the other ladies will agree with this.... Ask spouse/son/uncle/male friend to do something as well as what they were going to do, nope ain't going to happen.
I remember years ago the same criticism was leveled at hot dogs. At the time, they wanted to make hot dogs with a hollow center running through it so if a child did get a piece of hotdog lodged in their throat they would still be able to breath. No word on how that would work if it lodged sideways.

Do one thing at a time, do it well. If you have to set it aside for more information or materials, so be it. You can move on to the next project.
I have managers that think it is important to have mutltiple tasks open just for the sake of having a cluttered desk. Work a little on one, close it, work a little on the next , close it, and so forth. I get chided constantly for not being a multi tasker. my response is that I am too much of a professional to play the college kid silly games. I deliver results and a finished product, not a cluttered desk and open projects.
SO my opinion is, multitasking is for clowns that do not have a good work habit or ethic :)

Or it could be for people who are so loaded up in an understaffed work environment that they could work 24/7 and still not get everything done perfectly.
Doing one thing at a time and doing it well is a luxury that many of us can just dream about. That, and retiring with a gold watch after 30 years of employment by the same company.
Well let me tell you people, you should try looking at the other side of the coin.Doing absolutely nothing is far more difficult than one might first assume. I'll keep struggling at it though
or being able to do more than one nothing at the same time. negative multi tasking. That's my goal.
I thought of not trying that, but didn't want to set my sights too low.

Edit: On a serious note, I stopped multi-tasking when I started sending my girlfriend work reports and love letters to my boss.
About the only time I multitask is in the bathroom. I can brush my teeth, hum and snap my fingers at the same time. What did you think I meant?

I can not speak for others, but the product I provide has to be consistently on time and always accurate and well done. I personally will not hire a professed "multi tasker" they are too much of a liability

Pal, I think it all comes down to where one works and what one does.
Some professions call for 100% laser-like focus (bus drivers, surgeons, carpenters, snipers, hopefully pilots, etc.) and for others it's not as vital. I don't particularly enjoy it but it's a fact of my professional life and I have to grin and bear it. You don't get any points for saying...I can't take on any more assignments, or else I won't be able to do a good job on the few I have. You are simply expected to do great work no matter how much you've got on your plate; if it takes you 24/7 no one cares; if you do shoddy work or miss deadlines you won't be around too long.
That's just how it is in my world and the world of a lot of people I know. We've just learned how to work smarter and be more efficient.
......or blame it on the other person. That works, too.

My point is that if you do not multitask, the end result of work is actually a bit higher out put and certainly the quality is better. I have seen engineering environments abandon multi tasking and end up more productive.
And I guess I am a stubborn old man. When someone I contract work from gives me their BS line of being understaffed as an excuse for lower quality ,sloppy work, I make it clear to them that they are "off the list" for future work. Typically this means they are charging the same prices and utilizing fewer resources (balancing the corporation on the employees back). And that is something I will not condone

I think of the ability to multitask as being able to handle the small fires that pop-up while dealing with the primary task at hand.
Time management is going to be about priorities. It doesn't make much sense to put the fire drill down to explain what is taking so long in procuring fire.
I think knowing when to multitask is as important as knowing how to multitask.
I also agree you are more productive if you finish the task at hand first. But, this is an imperfect world.
In all seriousness, I think multi-tasking is an important tool that has its place but it shouldn't be, in my opinion, the primary mode of operation. It's just one more tool in the tool box. That said, I know a lot of corporations, big and small, attempt to squeeze the very last drop of work out of every employee by adding multiple tasks to their plate. That's a disservice to the employee and, ultimately, the customer. The productivity will generally go down, not up, which reduces the profit margin and usually increases the price to the customer.
The other piece is the employee. I've found that most folks work at a high stress level because they can not because they have to. Batch was spot on with his assessment.

I guess again I am bull headed . Multi tasking is a wasteful use of resources. It is smoke and mirrors used by management to hide their inability to properly staff tasks, and using the employee as a disposable asset. They are managers, not leaders. Organizations with leaders far out strip the performance of manager run organizations.
And as one of my heroes (Forest Gump) said. "Thats all I have to say about that " :)

Very often it's the employee's course of action for whatever reason, good or bad. Nor is it about handling multiple projects at one time. You multi-task everyday but it's probably on a smaller scale. Do you discuss business over lunch? Do you file those papers away while on the phone? Do you open your postal mail while having that spreadsheet open? Do you ever look at that girl walking down the street while driving? (You know you do). It's the little things we do day in and day out.
Where's the break even point when a person goes from efficient to inefficient? Depends on the person.

I don't call it multitasking in my profession, but any time you can get 2 things done with 1 effort, DO IT. A really good example is tearing shingles off a roof. I use a flat (square) shovel to remove the shingles and nails at the same time.. saves a lot of time going back to pull the nails. Keeping your work area (where you are tearing off) cleaned toward the next work area (where you will be tearing off next) almost eliminates the need to sweep, or at least greatly reduces the amount of time it takes to sweep. I call it "two birds with one stone", and you know "a bird in the hand..."
on a side note.. I can fish with one pole and bait another at the same time.. does that count? :D

THose are not multi tasking. The way I have defined multitasking is having multiple tasks open and working them at the same time. Not working anyone task to conclusion, but deliberately work each a bit at a time. The examples you gave to me are just normal activities, not multi tasking.
And who said we had to go by your definition, Mr. Merriam-Webster?

Sorry, I forgot to mention, I make my own definitions when I think it is needed . Lived too long under others. Usually makes for short conversations :) Is that arrogant, possibly, but makes things much more interesting for me :)
Also, I don't expect or require that anyone accept or for that matter to even like some of my definitions. This is one of the great advantages of our democracy :)

Is that multi-tasking?
Would it be better if I cooked one thing at the time and just kept it warm while starting on the next?

I would not think so. It is one unit of work (meal preparation) and mighty important one may I add . And it is not done in that fashion just to have multiple things open. Here again, my view. Perhaps it is too convoluted. But I accept that and will continue happliy on my way :)
Good example Benesse. Because I, for one, would be someone who says "stick to the task at hand" but I tend to do exactly what you said and while the pots are bubbling away, feed the dog, go through my mail and return phone calls. Every evening pretty much. And I have never had any complaints about my cooking before anyone suggests such, by the way, (not from the dinner guests that survived anyway!)

No, I don't think so, around our house it was called being a MOM, and I don't really think of it as multitasking, just way way it is.
I'm still not sure how it's done........or where the eyes in back of the head came from...................
Multitasking is a fancy work place term, at home it called living.
Hunter is great at multi-tasking. He can set his arm on fire, flap it like a chicken while reaching for the fire extinguisher and running for the trough. The man is talented.

LOL, reminds me of the old moonshiner we lived next to when I was a little kid. This was one of those kind of guys who was always inventing tools for specific jobs (this is pre--every power tool imaginable at your fingertips days), went hunting whenever the urge took him, never held a driver's license in his life I don't think. But get him working on some yard project and lose his temper, man the kids from all over would gather to see what new swear words that guy would invent. He had a real gift. Some of his phrases I've held onto over the years for special occassions.

trax, I know the type, working in a factory with guys from all over the world, I come to realize that in most cultures extra points were given for creativity in cussing, not necessarily just vulgarities.
I'm sure that anyone that has traveled much, figures this out, pretty fast.
Old Russian guy told me that in their language there were more cuss words than non-cuss words.
