View Full Version : Medical and Pharmaceutical Supplies
Okay, kids, without getting into the gory details, the fact of the matter is that if I hadn't been pumped full of enough antibiotics to fill a swimming pool a few weeks back, I probably wouldn't be here starting a new thread right now. (No snide remarks necessary, okay Wareagle? 2dumb? :sneaky2:)
Usually, family and friends react to my stock of medical supplies in mixed ways, from appreciation to astonishment to amusement. Yep, I've always had a TON of supplies on hand, including first aid supplies, medicines, and more sophisticated medical items, and by that I mean that I have more first aid supplies and medical supplies at home than you'll find on the shelves of most pharmacies.
Guess what? I'm now convinced that I don't have nearly enough medical and pharmaceutical supplies on hand if a SHTF situation - like the earthquake in Haiti - were to occur. One thing's for sure: if any type of disaster of the Haitian Earthquake magnitude were to strike, hospitals and pharmacies would be overwhelmed (yep, even in the USA) and quickly run out of supplies that would be needed.
So, it's time for another one of Ken's lists. A real loooooong shopping list. Yeah, it'll include a lot more surgical dressings and bandages and stuff like that. It's also gonna' include a lot more surgical and hospital supplies than I have now in my kit, including things like needles and syringes and IV supplies and sterilization equipment and medical equipment and prescription medications.
I've kept a decent supply of meds - antibiotics and non-prescription meds and prescription pain meds - in stock for years. I've never once misused or abused the stuff, and my doc - who knows me well - has never hesitated to write me a script to replace my old stock. On more than one occassion, I've gone to his office with a few bottles of old narcotics and antibiotics (containing the exact number originally prescribed) and asked him for new scripts to replace my old stock. Then, after he's written me new scripts, he's taken my old stock and made sure it was disposed of in an environmentally responsible way.
Two items that will be big on my list are antibiotics and pain killers. Tons of them - all kinds, too. If I can't deal with a medical problem myself, I figure that it'll be a lot easier to find a medical professional who can rather than the supplies required. So, I'll provide my (our) own supplies. Enough for a variety of injuries and medical problems for a lot of people for a reasonably extended period of time.
There's something you should all know: The expiration date on many prescription bottles is often pure fiction. Have you ever noticed that medication (narcotics, antibiotics, etc.) almost always "expire" exactly one year after the date of purchase? The fact of the matter is, they can often be used effectively YEARS AND YEARS after the so called "expiration date." If you don't believe this claim, check this artice out:

@ Everyone: Some random things to keep in mind.
A doctor can't necessarily write a prescription for anything he or she wants. The FDA watches narcotics scripts.
Too powerful of a painkiller might be a hindrance. Being out cold or even just mentally fuzzy in a time of crisis is not in your best interests unless someone else is doing the work. For most of us, a painkiller that will take the edge off a broken leg, for example, will help us in the long run to be able to do things we might still need to do until help arrives. Things live giving directions over a phone or radio or signaling once help is in the vicinity. Telling 911 how pretty the clouds are isn't going to help you much.
Having supplies and knowing how to use them are two different things. Take a first aid course and, if you can, don't stop there. Continue your medical training with things like wilderness first responder, etc. The more you know the better you can help yourself and others.

I, like Ken, have a long list of meds & pharma supplies that I'm constantly honing and replenishing. Been in a position to suffer without in many a god-forsaken parts of the world as well as in some western countries and I've learned the hard way. I can only imagine the need during TSHTF or worse.
Where I feel particularly deficient is in the knowledge of dealing with major cuts and wounds (beyond Quick Clot), and having the right stuff to treat them with--basic surgical supplies and shots of Novocain. I worry about having to start cutting and amputating without some sort of an injectable anesthetic. Pain can be immobilizing and deserves serious consideration IMO.
I don't know, B. I think doing something you aren't trained to do can put you in a lot worse shape than you were in before. Even if TS did HTF. Even if I had my left foot under a huge rock I don't think I'd want someone to come along and whack it off to get me out. There's a lot of things they need to know like tying off arteries and keeping the wound clean and dealing with the end of the bones and shock. And, of course, me taking a swing at them while they are cutting.

Rick, that is exactly my point! The chances are that someone with the proper medical training, or sufficient medical (not first aid or paramedic) training will be available in a reasonable amount of time. My goal is to make sure I have what they need to work with, to the extent that I can legally acquire those items.

That's why I said I'm deficient in the knowledge...so no, I wouldn't be doing anything invasive unless my life depended on it and even then I'd think about it long and hard. However, (I have given shots before) I think having shots of Novocain at home or in a BOB could be useful.

Funny this came up, I've just ordered some extra bits and pieces for my supplies. I'm still working on my Doc to give me extra medication that I take regularly, he still won't. I've even offered to go private and pay for the things myself! but no, I'm just a simple woman he sends off with a pat on the head and a very patronising smile..... I know more about epilepsy than he does!!

Weird, just today I was just thinking my First Aid and medical supplies were not good enough and was scoping around online for a good base EMT/Trauma kit and suture/syringe sets. What some people sell in terms of First Aid kits should be considered a crime of inadequacy.
I've always kept pretty well stocked First Aid kits at home and in the truck but nothing really long term or full trauma. Time to remedy that.

Having been trained several years ago as an EMT/Paramedic as well as medic training in the army I have/had a higher than most in first aid/medical training. HOWEVER I would be extremely hesitant even in a shtf situation to attempt anything much more advanced than suturing a wound beyond my training.UNLESS it was a life or death 100% situation. If I knew that unless I attempted something the other person had a 100% chance of death without it then I would attempt to do something more advanced.

That's a great list!
The only thing I'd add (maybe it's there & I missed) is some sort of a quick acting oral inhaler like Proventil (asthma) and a suction device to keep the airways clear when someone has experienced trauma or is seriously ill.

No probs at all 2D, what really annoyed me is the fact that I offered to pay for a private prescription and I still got the pat on the head thing.
The NHS, in it's inception was a great idea and ran very smoothly until a certain mrs Thatcher started selling bits off and setting up area "trusts" then the managers came in, gave themselves huge pay rises and got more managers in at the expense of the frontline staff. As Sourdough always says, "boots in the field"
B - You are correct. What I failed to include is about a quart size bottle of water for irrigation. It's in the pack I just forgot to add it the list I guess. It used to be a bottle of ophthalmic irrigation but it went past its expiration so I dumped the solution, cleaned the bottle and filled it with water. You're other three suggestions are very good. I hadn't thought about them.
sjj - That's a great question. Sadly I don't. I never even considered keeping a running tab on it. We've put our kit together or some time and got really serious about it the latter half of last year. We started with an M3 medic bag, outgrew it and went to a full backpack and now we've outgrown it. Since my wife is an RN, some things we just had around. Things like a stethoscope and blood pressure cuff. But purchasing items over time also staggers (somewhat) the expiration dates so you don't have to run out and refresh the entire pack at once.
There are some things in the pack not on that list. I guess I need to break the pack down and reinventory it. I have a headlight and a couple of small penlights in the pack as well as the water I mentioned.
I had remembered posting on this earlier so I went out and found the thread. Kinda of amazing the transformation since the last posting. As I said, we got pretty serious about it the latter half of last year. There are some other kit postings in this thread as well.

If I were going to offer some advice based on my experience is to acquire your supplies first then decide on the size of pack you need. I went about it just the opposite and found out I have more supplies than my pack can hold. So I have to fix that mistake. I also have several small bags that can attach to/or go into the larger pack. For example, my body bag/stretcher is in a pack along with a mylar type survival blanket. I have a kit for dental, a kit for bleeds, a kit for burns, etc. That way you know where stuff is and can grab it.

I've been working on my list a bit - painfully slow process may I add - and guess what? I was amazed to discover that you can purchase an entire IV setup EXCEPT for the inert pre-filled IV fluid bags (Lactated Ringers, etc.). This surprised me, because there are no medications in the fluids - it's just a delivery medium that can be recreated in your kitchen. Rick - instead of water, you may want to consider regular contact lense solution in place of ophthalmic irrigation solution. From what I understand, it's a very similar fluid and it approximates the make-up of natural tears, so there will be no burning sensation or drying out of the eye involved.
My eye kit also includes Parcaine 0.5% and Neomycin based Ophthalmic Suspension, because I have this nasty habit of tearing my cornea every couple of years.

OK...so all our medical supplies (separate from our home collection) are split between our 2 BOBs which are getting to be pretty heavy. If we have to bail out, it will only be on foot. No BOV, horse or a mule.:) We'll be the mules.
Carrying a separate medics pack like the one Rick uses would be very convenient but not practical in our situation.
We feel (right or wrong?) that we each need everything in case we ever get separated. And that applies to every single thing we carry.
These BOB's weigh more than I'd like--mine is +-24lbs fully loaded (still manageable after a 10 mile walk) and Mr. B's is about 30lbs.
The question is: Does our approach make sense given our situation? What are we not considering? (short of moving away)

B - I agree for your situation you probably need something like a high end first aid kit. We have ourselves plus three kids, spouses and four grandkids (soon to be 5) to think about and the luxury of one being medically trained.

We do carry Refresh Tears but, as a result of this thread and some discussion on our end, I think I'm going to talk to my Doc about some type of ophthalmic antibiotic for the eyes. Thanks!!!
Well, I did once have my foot stuck under a giant rock and I'm every so happy that I managed to wiggle it out. Other than that, I'm all for people having medical supplies that they know how to use, Rick's posts are dead on in that regard. I'm thinking that our former psychobabblist (Volremy) posted some pretty good pics (he may have deleted them) of his emergency medical supplies some time back and he seemed to have things pretty well covered (except apparently anything for hurt feelings)
Trax, I remember those pics, and they depicted a little bit of the stuff I have in my various kits.
The thing I'm trying to address here isn't my kits or BOBs, it's the supplies I'll keep AT HOME in case the SHTF. I'm talking about a quantity and volume of items that would require more than a large van to move.
Yeah, if I have to bug-out, most of it will stay behind, but so will most of my food stocks and everything else I stockpile.
My goal is somewhat different. The bag we have is our go to bag at home or when we travel, whether it's a week-end camping trip or going back to see our family. It's also the grab bag for our BOB and for bugging in. If it's just me then I take my personal first aid kit.
When I ran the local EMA in the 80's, we had a 200 bed (cot) packaged disaster hospital in our EMA warehouse. It was pretty much a Korean War era MASH unit without the tents.
The Hospital was packed in hundreds of heavy boxes and wooden crates, and took up about 75,000 cubic feet of storage space.
It came with two large 10kw. 110/220 3-phase generators - each almost the size of a Volkswagon, a 500 gallon collapsable water storage-filtraton plant, and every type of hospital, medical, dental, and surgical equipment and supplies you would need. There were enough X-ray supplies to take thousands of X-rays, quality hand tools of every kind, blankets, sheets, medical record forms, and about 1,000 units of refrigerated blood product and 10,000 doses of morphine (a highly guarded secret) included.
I was required to keep everything intact, and had to inventory and report to the state headquarters once each year. Around 1982, I received a directive to dump the blood product. I held onto everything else until my successor was appointed in 1989.
Sometime after 1990, my successor(s) received word that they could use and/or dispose of the hospital as they saw fit.
One of the clowns tossed the X-ray film in a dumpster. Does anyone want to venture a guess as to how much pure silver was on every single piece of X-ray film manufactures in the 1950's?
As far as I know, most, if not all, of the contents of the hospital were discarded. Wonder where all them tools ended up....... :innocent:
