Small tracks of land, place to circle the wagons....?

Would people buy a small (Very Small) track of land, just for a survival destination? Big enough for a motor home or travel trailer pad, a small garden, storage shed.

Or there is private land inside National Parks, what if 20 families went together and created a private survival village. Very rich families can spend millions on their private survival compound. But, why don't multiple families with a common point of interest say a Church, or Harvard Graduates, create a common retreat.......?

I am surprised that there are not survival villages, or that people don't turn a remote fishing lodge, with 16 cabins, into a private survival village. and sell shares, or condominium the lodge.

Interesting question. An out of the box answer for sure. Would be a good way to pool resources in a geographicaly central or acceptable location for a particular group. I wonder how such an area would be accepted by the existing community? How would it be governed or managed? I would think that such a grouping would have a fair chance to succeed since they would share similar backgrounds. Using it as a vacation type destination would have a ancillary benefit in that continual improvements could be made by the group. A great idea I would think

I will need to do something soon, largely because of year around access as I approach 70 years of age. As it is now winter access is snowshoes or Ski-Doo. To keep the road open year around is too expensive for one person to bare. My dream of someone buying 1/2 of the land, gets more remote as the prices escalate. So I have been considering building a campground, and sell the sites, not to survivalist but to city folks, for their RV's.

I was looking at the online newspaper this morning,glancing over the tax sale properties listed,ands saw an acre of land going for $289.34,kind of caught my attention,as this is the place I lived when the lump started going through his medical problems,it has a mobile home on the property that looks now like it needs some attention,but it would still be a bargain for the money,but I have never purchasd at a tax sale,and not real sure how that works.

I had a garden when I lived there,and know that is good for growing what ever is planted,has an outbuilding on it for storage,and access to a creek that always has water running no matter how dry the season gets.

The rental concept would work if I had more time, or if I had children. I figure to be dead with-in 7 to 12 years by age 75'ish. I find it interesting that people don't plan on being dead, but they plan on being healthy and physically athletic for ever and ever.

A variation could be the following: Prepare the camp ground as you envision, but instead of RVs, maybe build (prefab?) small one bedroom cabin type structures. Then do land leases (or whatever similar you have up there). That could give you an income flow to maintain the access and infrastructure. Would also keep things fairly uniform so that it does not degenerate into a junk yard looking community. Just a thought, I would guess would be dependent on building costs. You may consider that the new resident would purchase the pre fab and be responsible for having it shipped in.

Good idea but Harvard graduates doing something like that? Hah!! I think they are too "educated" and maybe prefer living in stinkin cities.

I "only" have 3 and 1/2 acres but it is surrounded by a million acre national forest. A few million acres of forest if include about 30 miles south into Colorado where there is much more forest.

There are some lots for sale across the road from my mtn place that I wish some good survivalist or wilderness person would buy instead of just another fancy cabin builder. Who is only up there a few days a year. Just enough to aggravate me and not a good helpful person or persons...

I'd give your idea a go Sourdough. I like the idea of living remotely, but as I've said before, I wouldn't do it alone. The idea you have would be a solution to that. I have immense admiration for you living such a remote life on your own.

Sourdough, I think those are called communes and that in itself has a lot of negative connotations to average folk like me.

I have always been interested in owning a few acres in the right place (am always looking just for fun) surrounded by decent, like minded neighbors who could become friends. And in trying times we could even pull our resources together and look out for each other as good neighbors usually do.

However I have a great deal of reservation about starting off with shared stuff--seen too many examples of it not working out, human nature being what it is. It's problematic even in large families where eventually someone feels marginalized or pulling more weight than the rest, or...fill in the blank.

Could it work like a kibbutz? Sure...in Israel.
I just honestly haven't seen it in this country but have an open mind.

If that's the case then I misunderstood Winnie.
I suppose owning adjacent acreage with people you know and like and share core POVs is a terrific idea if you're lucky enough to find people like that in a place where you'd actually want to live.
It would be a dream come true for me, just don't know if it's too good to be true.
But sight unseen, I like a lot of folks here and that's a start.

How did you figure on 7-12 years?
75ish isn't really old enough to expect to drop dead.

I am not planning on being dead, it's gonna happen anyway.
But I do plan on getting old though and everything that it entails.
We don't have children either and we can't and don't expect anyone to take care of us when the time comes. So the burden is on us to make sure we don't squander our resources now and have nothing to live on when it most counts.
It's no fun thinking about it, it's no fun saving money for it, but it's even less fun being old and unable to take care of yourself.

Even short term, if you to say, rent/lease and add in extra option(extra money up front) to own their parcial/cabin etc, in the end. (your end.)

This way you still have control over the land, and can control whats happening.
I have seen the concept of "like minded individuals banding together' many times, but, as was brought up, human nature being what it is, doesn't really work out.
Look around where you live now, and most everyone has a least one neighbor that is really a PITA, and wanting to impose their will on others etc.

The area where our cabin is located, could be considered a "group".
There are maybe 15 cabins located on anywhere from 4 acres to 30+ acres.

Even though most everybody hadn't met prior to buying the land, everyone is generally on the same page as far as wanting a place in the country.

But the reasons vary greatly, and even though most every one gets along, everyone does have their own ideas.

So it will remain a loose group, that does get together from time to time, do help each other when ever the is a need, it remains their own.

sourdough; i would buy such land for a home; provided i could reach a place to work, or have the telecommunications to work from home.

a 'survival village' is actually an idea i've entertained a lot. e.g. a fallback property with space and lodging for the whole family and those friends who might need it.

for me it's a pipe dream, unless i made a lot of progress in life first. i just like the idea that my whole extended family and close friends might always have a common place at need.

I think this is a great idea Sourdough, but considering the price of land in your neck of the woods it is not a reality.

Unless you're looking for yuppies to build 500,000 high tech off grid homes.

In order for this to work, for me, the land would have to be large enough to support a decent sized farm and have access to hunting and fishing year round.

I think the biggest reason this hasn't taken off is people and their differences. Even like minded people have differences and everyone wants to do it their way. And of course you get the freeloaders who bring everyone else down to their level which in the end brings the whole thing to a bitter end.

Your typical american doesn't have the social skills required for such a thing to work. Too much individualism, which ain't a bad thing, just not a GOOD THING FOR THIS TYPE OF DEAL.
