light quiet land transport thats free

I was searching the forum here and i didnt see one thread about bicycles.


Whats everyones thoughts on them as light transport if BoB-ing? put a trailer on the back and theyll haul as much as you want them too or as much as you can pedal them?

Also has anyone tried one of these little 80 cc motors on them?

I dont think im suggesting them as a sole form of transport more as back up but my bike can certainly get more place than my car.

I also figure theyd be usefull seeing as how you could hook an alternator up to the back tyre and produce some energy not alot but some enough for a small radio.

So whats the opinion?

Bicycles have been discussed a few times. If that were your only mode of transportation, it would certainly increase your range of mobility (over walking). As far as bugging out - it may be an option for some, but probably not me.

well it certainly wont be my first choice but its better than nothing and if gas is scarce and im just going a few miles away 6-7 it would be nice to have a bike to save on scarce fuel is quicker than walking.

Unless for some reason you don't want to be, or can't be, on the roads. Consider your type of bike and your physical capabilities.

Thanks for the links Rick i like makezine alot aswell as instructables great websites as for the ones to ride on rails they wont work around here as ironicaly the tore up the railroad to put a bike path. And lowkey i cant agree more im not suggesting a bike over a car more so a bike to get around your bob location for like scouting or checking traps that type of thing. i do realize now i didnt make that clear in my original post and i apologize for that. i hope this clears up my question.

That's a good point sjj. Another thing to note, It's not unheard of that a retreating army will force civilian refugees onto the road ways as a means of slowing down an advancing enemy. The Germans used it with great success to slow down the Allied forward advance. Just one more thing to keep in the back of you mind when/if deciding to bug out along with the reasoning you are doing so.

sjj i couldnt agree more ive been eyeing up those carts for awhile now and i think you really get what im trying to say and as the dirt bikes go thats why i was asking about those little engines just to supplement your own power if your tired or just to get out of somewhere in a hurry. and i didnt know that rick thank you thats good info.

Sourdough's post on sleds got me to thinking about this scenario and the luxury of pulling something in the snow vs. carrying it. I may toss it in storage but I think a sled would be a good winter tool to add to the toolbox.

I think it is a great idea, or a moped, mini bike, etc. I would want something that could go off road, mountain bike, enduro, etc. roads could be jammed, gas could be short or unavailable, criminals could be waiting on the road. My BOL, if I had one wouldn't have road access anyhoo, so I think a peddle bike would be optimal. easy to hide/ stash too!

sjj ill be glad to tell you what ever i decide and the gas efficiency is a major plus for me and in a bad situation if i was forced to use it i would not use the motor for hills or grades but more on flat ground both to save my energy for the hills and the motor itself is a valuable resource and i would not want to put it under any undue stress. I dont think ill ever get "into" motorcycling but i would still like to get my motorcycles lisc. for the same reason i want to get a cdl and pilots lisc. its a valuable thing to know that might really help me out of a jam one day.

Klkak - looks good - I like. that is exactly what I meant by saying dirt bike (ATV). In certain situation, I'm sure someone could throw snow machine in the mix.

Especially up here, a snow machine would be very useful.

Side thought. The folks that own Yetna station on the Yetna river have an 18 year old son who runs freight up and down the Yetna river. His tow vehicle is a 2009 Skidoo 800 SWT. Well it broke down and had to be put in the shop. His dad told him to take his "Alpine" to use until his machine was fixed. It was something seeing a 40 year old snowmachine pulling 2 freight sleds carring a ton each up the river.

I've thought a great deal about bikes. For multiple reasons I can not/will not BO (unless something akin to a nearby nuke attack, forces the issue.) If gas becomes scarce (or worse, the power goes (EMP) and the pumps don't work), a bike would be golden.

I taught my kids to ride before they wanted to learn and now can't get them to stop. I have a good supply (and added to it just today) of back-up: tubes, chains, parts, pumps, lights, reflectors, chains and locks, helmets, headbands, etc. I am collecting baskets, bottle holders, panniers and other stuff that easily attach to frames. I bought a used tandem from craigslist that is a rear wheel and bar that easily attaches to an adult bike so a child can ride-along. I will next purchase a kids trailer, (always available for about $50 on CL) the kind that holds up to 100lbs, which is good for hauling stuff. (Make sure you get a better one w/ a metal frame else you'll drag the bottom and it'll tear quickly.) I am also considering an adult tricycle that has a huge basket between the back wheels. (They are pretty widely available in my area and good used ones can be found.) The big problem w/ this is: storage.

I will also get 1 or 2 RadioFlyer wagons and/or Little Tykes plastic wagons, things are practically indesctructable and easy to use w/ a bike.

I have considered and will likely get a motor or two. Now, I want the kind that is slow, that does NOT require any type of license. (I don't want a motorcycle or alternative BO vehicle or even a scooter, just a bike that I don't have to pedal as much.) FYI: there is forum (just like this one) on motor biking, where you can learn everything about them: http://motorbicycling.com/ You can buy complete motors, kits, parts, both gas or electric, etc, etc, there are even local clubs and shows.
I haven't made any decisions on this yet. I want something doggy-piggy-bunny easy that I don't have to look at until I really need it, hopefully, never.

It takes a ton of effort to get them installed, I wound up sitting in the tub with mine in six inches of soapy water before I succeeded but it was well worth the effort.

Checked the shelves about a month ago thinking I might get a set for my wifes bike and they've still got 'em in stock.

That is what I did to my strongest mtn bike. I hate repairing things especially fixing flat tires. But I cannot find anymore solid rubber bike tube inserts, even at the two Wal-mart Supercenters.

I also have two other mtn bikes but mostly I use my Ford truck since it hauls a lot and is best going up mountains. But a mtn bike can get me places and is more dependable than any motorized vehicle.

Going up the mountain is a pain and I have had to push my mtn bike up more than one mtn. But going down the mountain is fun and can coast much of the time.

It took me a long time to spot them, They were up on a top shelf slid in sideways a couple of aisles away from the bikes. Might be able to order them online and have them shipped to the store (no shipping charges that way.)

I have a friend who uses and old mountain bike to get his deer and elk out of the woods. If he is on fairly level terrain, or near/on and old/closed logging road it works even better. Just halves it up (front and back) and sets the animal over the frame of the bike. This lets the wheels and the frame take all of the weight. Then he just grabs the handlebars and pushes it out of the woods. He has it down to a better science than my description, but it has worked well for him for many years.
Might work well for a heavier pack. Strap it on the bike and just push it. If you get the technique down, might be an easier way to make some miles and not have a pack on your back. I know I did this with my paper route on some of the more rough parts of the road (or when I cut through a couple of woodlots) worked well with the old routebag.

I know Firestone still makes them, and the local Les Schwab carries them.

Again it's my metal fab background and macgiver instinct coming into play but I once made a trailor hitch and rigged a golf bag (wheeled) as a trailer for a tenspeed. Sorry no pics... but it worked. Great for fishing at a local bridge and hauling stuff home from the grocery.

I have ridden bikes on and off trails. It is a good form of transportation for logging roads and decent trails. But, in the wet season you are better off carrying the bike. I've stood cranking and tires just spinning and sliding left to right. I stopped riding like that because my Dad over exerts his self in places like that and he gets me all nervous.
