Default how do i make a good torch?

id like to know how to make a good torch using natural or man made materials.

so you can get an idea of what materials are around ill let you know that i live in northern minnesota.

i should also say that im looking for something that will burn for a long time without the need for motion.

    thanks in advance,

Is this something that can burn in an urban setting? Perhaps man materials like a mid-weight wool suit? ..... just kidding.

How about cattails soaked in nearly any kind of oil other than motor oil (Pee U). A 3 foot length of wood split slightly at one end and the split stuffed with dry grass and tied with dried grass? How about burlap wrapped around a stick and soaked in kerosene?

Rolled birch bark works well too. Here's a vid that our own Erunk made showing how he makes torches. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=rxJC3xWLQKE

my personal favorite is still pitch from longleaf pines, though any pine works great. The sap'll burn for hours. If it's something you're looking for as a regular thing the best thing to do is find a few pines oozing and wrap something like tee shirt fabric around it so it gets soaked. If you layer those up on a branch it's pretty effective.
