Cotton or Canvas

Looking into buying a tent. Need a little direction.Kinda lookin at a military tent, a big one. 2 sides, my side, and 1 for the inlaws.

Lots of big tents on the market. Do you have it narrowed down to anything more specific? Price, size, weight, material (I realize you said cotton or canvas, but there are more), height, general type of use (terrain, weather, etc).

And what is your intended use? Do you want to car camp, backpack, set it up in a location and leave it?

This is an area that two tents might serve you better depending on use.

Why cotton or canvas? I used to buy used/returns for the LLBeans outlet store. These were 6 or 8 person domes. We would use these as our ice huts for ice fishing, just cut a hole in the floor. They would last 2 sometimes 3 seasons of brutal abuse. Had one collapse on a blizzard, got the snow off of it and it poped right back up!

Like Rick said, what is your intended use? That is the first question before giving such a generic answer as to whether it should be cotton or canvas, Which, BTW, canvas is cotton, just a heavier weight cotton!

Its gonna be for a lot of wind and rain in the summer. Winter time, minor snow 4-12 inches. looking to use as hunting and fishing. Gotta be big enough for 10 people + campstove/heater.

Cabela's has some "outfitter" tents that are big enough for what you need.

They have them in canvas and heavy gauge rip-stop nylon. Both have ports for wood burning stoves and the nylon tents have floors in them.
