    Default Attack dogs

Perhaps we can persuade Hope to switch to guard chihuahuas

SAGE, Riverside County -- A woman got the surprise of her life when she walked into her garage to see why her dogs were barking. She found a full-grown mountain lion.

Ana Lee Spray, 23, says her three toy chihuahuas were barking so loudly that it woke her up Saturday morning. She couldn't figure out what was wrong, and got up to check on the dogs. When she saw the animals standing guard at the opening of the garage, Spray investigated further.

She ran into her daughter's bedroom, which has a window that looks into the garage, and quickly got the answer staring back at her.

The chihuahuas, which weigh about three pounds each, had cornered the mountain lion. She says the big cat appeared to be angry and began hissing at her and foaming at the mouth.

Spray quickly called 911 and then grabbed her video camera to record a few pictures of the cornered cougar.

The pint-sized puppies refused to back off, and kept barking for about 45 minutes until two Riverside County Sheriff's deputies arrived at Spray's home in the 3900 block of San Ignacio Road.

"When they saw the dogs they said `These little things?' When they saw the mountain lion their jaws dropped," Spray said. "They radioed, `This is a full-size mountain lion and it is not happy to see us.' "

Officers with the Department of Fish and Game arrived at Spray's home a short time later and Spray called the dogs off.

Spray said the Fish and Game officers shot at the animal three times with a tranquilizer gun. The cat then ran, and the deputies and Fish and Game officers chased it.

Spray said she heard another shot, but wasn't sure if came from a tranquilizer gun or firearm.

Authorities have not said publicly whether the mountain lion was re-released into the wild or shot and killed.

Spray said she heard conflicting reports about what happened to the cougar. She said one of the deputies told her it had to be euthanized, but her sister said it was released back into the wild.

The Riverside County Sheriff's Department was not immediately available for comment.

Experts say the animal was likely looking for food and had its eye on the chihuahuas as a quick snack.

One of nature's laws is to be fearful of loud noises. Plus the cat probably never saw a Chihuahua before.

The only bites I received while (employed) were from little ankle biters. One of life's great mysteries.

    Cool Well now...

My brother, sister, & late mother raised full blooded chihuahuas & let me tell you , they have no concept of size differences & will attack anything they view as attackable; sort of like a Siamese cat. I had one of those that chased a full-grown boxer out of my yard.

    Jack Russell Terriers.

A buddy of mine stopped by a breeder friend's house just to say hello. They're talking out back, and the tranquility of the farm gave way to a blood-curdling screech. Out of the woods runs this coyote with a Jack Russell hanging underneath - with his jaws clamped around the coyote's throat.

My friend bought that dog. Then he bought two more. They're the cuddliest little house pets you can find. Until you catch 'em trying to drag the neighbors Sheppard through a gap under the fence. Those little dgs think they weigh 300 lbs., and they act like it, too.

A lot of the smaller breeds seem to thing they are much bigger than they are. I lived across the street from a guy that raised Dachshunds. There was always another neighbors German Shepard that tormented the Dachshunds, but never came into the yard. One day it decided to venture into the yard. The older male weiner dog lept off the front porch and headed straight for the larger dog. He never slowed down as he ran under the German Shepard. As he exited from underneath he turned his upward and bit off a piece of the part of the German Shepard that hung down. That Shepard never tormented the Dachsunds again.

Not to mention having a "high-pitched" bark the rest of it's life! My Sister now raises papered Dashunds, so I know you're right. Little buggers run real close to the ground with those short legs!

I'll bet you any amount of money that the Cougar died of emberrasment! All the other Cougars were saying: " You got boxed in by 3 little what?! You're kidding me! What are you , a Cougar or a kitty-cat!"

Over here we call this "wee man syndrome"
JRT's are the best, I had one along with a Greyhound, the JRT would walk under the hound in the rain in the hope it kept dry! (tho it never did) They make the best ratters on this this earth, the best pets, and fantastic guard dogs.

If I remember correctly, Jack O'Connor told a story about an Alaskan guide back in the late 1950s who had a Jack Russell. In the story a grizzly bear tried to invade the camp late at night. The jack Russell kept the beat distracted long enough for the guide to kill the bear. Unfortunately, the Jack Russell didn't survive.
