I am quite amazed at some of the things they can dream up and actually achieve. I watched a show on Discovery, PBS or one of them a couple of nights ago where the guy can actually see with his tongue! He was able to play ball with his kids for the very first time. Pretty amazing stuff.

My brother-in-law is an eye surgeon. Several years ago he was on the Today show with one of his patients. The patient had suffered and eye injury that left him blind (I think in one eye) as a child. (no mention of a Red Rider) Anyway - my b-i-l grafted sensors onto the eyeball, which was still in tact. The patient was able to see (not in color) with that eye.

Some time ago I saw a show where the guy had a sensor implanted directly into his brain where sight is "interpreted" (however that works) and some type of camera was then connected to the sensor. The idea was the camera simply replaced his eyes and his brain interpreted the input. After a bit of trial and error he was able to "see" clearly enough to distinguish between individuals. BIZARRE!
