Default The biggest misunderstanding of Peak Oil

All this talk about drilling offshore, drilling in Alaska, etc.

As if this could return gas prices to $1.50 a gallon. People really think these measures could save us.

No only would these measures not save us, they would not even help.

This is the major misunderstanding of peak oil - that there are 1 trillion barrels of oil in the ground, we just have not been agressive enough in getting it out.

The truth is - we pumped the easy trillion and now we are going to replace it with the hard trillion. Barrels that practically bubble to the surface are replaced with barrels miles below the ocean surface.

Peak oil is NOT the end of oil, it is the end of CHEAP oil.

There is no answer to oil and gas prices. They will fluctuate in the short term (sometimes wildly), but over time they will go up.

We have to let go of the past (oil) and look to the future (alternatives).

Unfortunatly, as a country, we are too stupid to do this. There will be a day when we will spend 99 barrels of oil to harvest 100. We just can't get our heads out of the ground.

(grabs chest!!!) You're right (grabs chest again) I can't believe it. Right on the money!!

I think we're a lot smarter than that, however. We'll wean ourselves of oil because folks simply won't be able to pay for it.

How long will it be before they can make a hydrogen truck to deliver these things?

Before we get to hydrogen vehicles, I suspect we will need a bandaid in the interim. Natural gas seems the way to go. Cheap, clean. Cities already use it for fleet vehicles, and it is gaining popularity on the west coast, but there are only about 750 retail CNG stations across the country.

well not only gas and diesel but kerosene. there are to many applications that depend on a fossil fuel in one way or another... areas where solar and hydro could be put in place.
the hydrogen cars out now are too expensive for the guys that needs them the people that drive 35 or more miles to work. they've become toys for the eco friendly rich.
and natural gas is not going to be as cheap anymore in alabama many people are dumping gas appliances and heating for electric as there has been a 35% jump on natural gas and propane in the last year and a half.

Hold on there flat foot. Not so fast. Do you have your tire sandals? Your California tread reuse permit? I didn't think so. How about your No Feet Insurance? You can't go running a Tacoma around California without insurance. Have you had your toes inspected? Do you have any idea how much toe jam would wind up on California roadways if they let everybody do that without a foot inspection. Man! Some nerve.

Guess I'm still missing it. It just looks like an emissions analyzer in the tailpipe of a car.
