To appreciate that device one must remember that it was loaded with an old fashioned round "bomb" that has a fuse stuck in a hole in the "bomb". Yep just like the ones on the Spy VS Spy comic.

You loaded the mortar, placed the grenade in the cup, then you lit the grenade and fired the weapon!

If the weapon misfired you were standing there watching the fuse burn toward the bomb at a rapid rate, about a foot from your face.

Time to throw the mortar up in the air, squeal like a little girl and run like he!!.

There is at least 1 original on display at the museum at Fort Ticonderoga, N.Y. 12883. I was at a reenactment at Fort Crown Point, N.Y. saw a repo in action shooting exploding tennis balls using flour as smoke effect. Like those live actions. I was told by the owner/builder that he was able to scale the original. Tut
