I drink a lot of mixeraids. I put a cup of sugar in a pitcher, add a splash of whatever mixed drink mixer might suit your fancy, and finish it off with water. Stir it up and refrigerate.

Here's a recipe for Agua Fresca:

    Agua Fresca

This is a delicious, refreshing drink made of fresh fruits.

    2 cups cold water
2 cups fruit, seeded if necessary, and chopped
    2 tablespoon sugar
a squirt of lime, lemon, or orange juice

Put it all in a blender and blend until smooth, then pour through a strainer, working the pulp through into a pitcher. Serve chilled and over ice.

I used watermelon but any pulpy fruit will do - other melons, citrus, strawberries, pineapple, papayas, cucumbers, etc.

    Serves 4.
True enough, my final home is still out there, but this is most certainly my home range and I love it. I love every rock I fall off and tree I trip over. Even when I am close to dying from exhaustion, a beautiful sunset doesn't lose it's power to refresh and inspire me and that, in itself, is enough to save me sometimes.

Cucumber and lemon water. Its as simple as two or three slices of lemon and cucumber with some honey, or sugar, in a glass of iced water. Grandma used to make this.

We have an herb garden with mint, lemon balm, borage and other herbs. We make tea using fresh herbs.

I looked up some of the herbs grandma would put in tea and found this link. several of the recipes are similar to what she used to make.

Along those lines, in the coffee section of the grocery store you can find sugar free vanilla flavoring. Add that to tangerine seltzer water...creamsicle!

Then there's my evening standby, the Manhattan. many variations, in my family, this is how it's made:

2 oz. Bourbon (Maker's Mark or Buffalo Trace)
    1/2 oz dry vermouth (Tribuno)
    small splash of sweet vermouth
    a couple of dashes bitters
    cherry
    crushed ice

    ahhhhh

My daughter made me some of this about a month ago or so and I had y wife buy the stuff and she made me some to take to work. I got tingly from it. I think it is the cucumbers. I don't know a better way to say the feeling. If you ever took a mild pain killer and it made you feel "buzzed" without easing the pain. That would be the effect.

I slice lemon and soak it in the water for a while. Good stuff.

Thanks, everybody! Keep the recipes coming. I've got some experimenting to do this summer.

I've always enjoyed (for non alcoholic) a single scoop of sherbert (any will do), then fill the glass mostly with gingerale and the rest with cranberry juice. Vary it to your personal taste, but its always been a good drink. Easy to make in a large punch bowl too for parties.

Alcohol, well I'm a pretty simple person. Beer. Summer = wheat beers

The Original Southeastern New England Coffee Frappe / Malted

Coffee Syrup and Coffee Ice Cream have been Southeastern New England favorites for generations.

Our frappes, as we call them, are basically milkshakes with ice cream. In some parts of the country, our frappes would be called a milkshake - here, blended syrup and milk is a "milkshake" and becomes a "frappe" if ice cream is added. Some places, particularly the few remaining ice cream counters in our older drug stores, call them "cabinets" instead of frappes. Add malt powder and you have a "malted frappe."

The Recipe: Put 2 or 3 generous scoops of coffee ice cream into a drink mixer cup (4 or 5 scoops if using a regular larger blender). Add syrup to taste (you'll have to sample 'till you know how sweet-strong you prefer it) and add milk until the fill line is reached. Blend until smooth, but leave a few chunks of ice cream.

Optional taste -- add a few tablespoons of malt powder before adding milk.

(This is NOT a low calorie drink, LOL.)

If you can't find coffee syrup, make your own! Combine 1 cup of sugar to 1 cup of espresso or extra strong coffee (brew 1½ cups of ground coffee with 16 oz. water) and heat in a sauce pan until sugar is completely dissolved and mixture becomes "syrupy." Allow to cool before use.

If you can't find coffee ice cream, use vanilla ice cream and add more coffee syrup than with coffee ice cream.

The last pic is a coffee cabinet from the soda fountain/ice cream counter at Delekta Pharmacy in Warren, R.I., about a 15 minute ride from home for me - and well worth the trip.

So, you put malt powder in a cabinet and it becomes a frappe? I'll never get the hang of all these regional differences.

Here, a cabinet, when you put food-stuffs in it, becomes a pantry.

You blend milk and syrup and you have a milk shake.

Add ice cream and you have a frappe (cabinet).

Add malt to a frappe/cabinet and you have a malted frappe/malted cabinet.

Sorry, I'm still keeping my malt powder in the pantry.
