    Default Vegtable glycerine and glycerine

First off WOW! I just found this site and forum and I am blown away! You will be seeing a lot of me.
Now for my question. are vegtable glycerine and glycerine the same? I have tried to look on the net but without luck. I wanted to do the PP and glycerine to show my kids, very carefully of course. Science experiment and fire starter all in one! Thanks for any info!

My understanding is that glycerin is made from either vegetable oil or animal fat. Chemically I think they are the same.

Just know that it will stain everything it touches including glass. If you get it on you try to wash it with either lemon juice or hydrogen peroxide.

    Agree with Crash...the same.
Agree with Rick, but he understated it...messy, sometimes permanently.messy. There was a stain at my chemistry station in college that thr Prof said was at least five years old...you guessed it.

Scientific experiment I'll grant you but not a safe fire starter. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=I9QH_fZNnq4 Tony

Glycerin is a byproduct of saponification or soap making. A alkaline solution is mixed with a fat under heat and you get soap and glycerin. As an old craft ash from the fire pit is placed in a pot of water and left to stand overnight it becomes alkaline. Its then heated and fat is added it reacts and smells like hell. Table salt is added and you have lye soap and glycerin. Their is no difference in the glycerin if its vegetable fat or animal fat just the soap the alkali solution also changes the nature of the soap.

    good luck

If you're going to do this, please try it on a small scale without the kids around first. This produces a violent exothermic reaction. Be safe and good luck.
