Good stuff Rick. I was listenting to a radio show today and is was stated that 40-50 cents per gallon goes to the government. I think that was state and federal combined though.

Fuel duty per Litre of petrol accounts for approximately 60% of the price.
    A breakdown is
    Petrol;Fuel Duty 60.9p Product 53.4p VAT23.8P Retailer/Delivery 5p.
Diesel; Fuel Duty 60.9, Product, 59p, VAT 25p, Retailer 5p.
It doesn't really matter whether there is a lot of tax on fuel or not, you still have to pay it. Generally taxes raised over here are put into a collective pot and divvied up between the various needs of the country. A couple of exceptions are Council tax and National insurance.
I'm sure Google has more info.

Click on the link, to see the map.

The map above from API shows gasoline taxes by state (combined local, state and federal), which range from a low of 26.4 cents per gallon in Alaska to a high of of 66.1 cents per gallon in California, averaging 48.1 cents per gallon across all states. How does that compare to oil company industry profits per gallon?
According to this post on Exxon Mobil’s Perspective Blog , “For every gallon of gasoline, diesel or finished products we manufactured and sold in the United States in the last three months of 2010, we earned a little more than 2 cents per gallon. That’s not a typo. Two cents.”
