    Default primitive survival

As part of me taking up some reigns and becoming an elite Survival Ranger,
one of the topics and directions I am quiet eager to do and design a some form of course around that also.
So I am basically thinking of how to formulate it, to put it into maybe a 48 hour end objective of the learner.
I am just trying to brain storm the frame work and skills around it.
And maybe perhaps break it down I would imagine to I guess separate skills and or modules to learn.
So lets say we have a primitive skills basics , and advanced primitive skills.
ending with a 48 hour or maybe 72 hour Primitive survival scenario.
So far I think would have to break down into:

    Fire making:
    the various main friction methods.
    Cordage making
Cutting tool/s making - flint mapping etc.
    Shelter making
    Trap making
Weapons making - hunting and defense.
Wild foods - foraging and preparations.
    Water purification methods.
    Primitive navigation methods.

    any comment?

I see a good start.....but many subjects are extensive....maybe not to all covered in that time frame...
    Just attempted to prioritize .....(IMO)

    A).Primitive skills basics
    ......Water location and purification methods.
    .......Fire making:
    the various main friction methods.
    ......Shelter making
......Wild foods - foraging and preparations...(this is a big subject....maybe pick a local go to or two?...For starters)
    B) Primitive skills ...Advanced.
    .....Cordage making
    .....Trap making
.....Cutting tool/s making - flint mapping etc...(big subject as well......need to pick a few examples)
.....Weapons making - hunting and defense.
    .....Primitive navigation methods.

As you well know, all subjects can be expanded or rearranged depending of your students.....just be careful or getting bogged down.
I would want to break it into small sections with practice time....

    Sounds like a fun project.

    you right.
    It is extensive.
And yes I would likely break it down.
I think what I am going to do is see what is easier to learn and do and implement quicker at first..to cover the priorities
and I feel that is water, shelter and fire.
    food being the last priority.
I have a lot of testing to do, and trial and error with some of the things...
and other things a lot of research, esp for the foods/medicines.. very are specific and seasonal.
but yeah I am keen to work on it.
and also Keen to still do a 48 hour solo primitive.

    Thank you man.
I have had a guy that was 67 on one of our survival adventures. I rather have some one like you experienced, than a young guy. Young people lack depth.

I would need porters...They still have them.....?

You have seen my primitive camp.... right?....
My "porter" is a F-250 with cargo trailer.
Sometimes up-grade to Pop-up travel trailer.

The inclination to freeze, cook your butt off, get soaked, bugs...lots of bugs....no sleep (getting hard to get up off the ground)....and chasing that magic stick that poke you no matter what.....Has waned a bit.

Primitive is ....whirlpool broken....No room service.

But you are correct....most older guys I know...are still curious and will give you a chance....
Although you may get a "Well, I suppose you could do it that way....But maybe want to try"

Many younger guys already know everything.....LOL

Medicinal herbs, bush medicine stuff happens and when your hours or more from medical treatment knowledge could save there life. At the very least plantain for healing property's, bites, yarrow for bleeding internal external, comfrey for sprains, charcoal for diariea, Mullien for respretory problems keep it simple and easily identifying for beginners

I'd say you should focus on short term survival skills for the basic and long term skills for the advanced. For example there is no need to trap food for the average 78 hr survival scenario, so why teach it? Keep it simple, water, fire, shelter, navigation, signaling, First Aid. For the advanced techniques you could do bushcraft, traps, weapons, fishing etc But that's more for fun

Agree to disagree many times short term survival becomes long term

    When?

What are your numbers and verification other than sensationalist news reports being the only thing that hits the media?

Real life experience hunting trip with my brothers turned into a hunting accident. Instead of being gone 1 day, we were gone 5 with just what we had in our pockets and 1 meal. Things go south fast, so yes short term can become long term. 5 days may seem short term to some add the factor of one hunter being wounded severely, all teenagers, November Northern Michigan with a vehicle that won't start in the middle of no where, it gets real, fast.

    short term long term.
I think the skills should be tought none the less. however possibly split up into a primitive bushcraft.
Traps are not too difficult to make and learn, well some of them like a dead fall etc are very easy.
So yeah I dont see putting every thing into the syllabus. I see putting in maybe 2-3 of each various things, being the easiest and quickest and best bang for buck type things.

    Thanks......
We have camped in every thing from a pine tree (under)...to campers and condo's

We didn't know it was bushcraft, ot surviving..... just living in the woods for hunting, fishing.... and work (tree trimming crew).

I enj0y seeing what people mcome up with and actually "use".
Too many demonstrations of activities.... but not actual used, shelters, fires. traps, ..... etc.

That's why I enjoy your post and vid's... and a few couple of other posters ....actually doing activities..

    1. Probably too "complex" for a "short term" school but what about making shoes/moccasins? I guess you would need to teach tanning first....and how to harvest/prepare/use sinew
    2. For sure when you are in the "tool making mode" awls from bone, horn, wood and stone???
