Haven't you ever read "Summer of the monkeys" https://www.amazon.com/Wilson-Rawls-...of+the+monkeys
That was one of my favorite books as a kid.

Having lived in Southern California, and out here in the west high desert... I am with KYRS. It is way to easy to find a spot to "survive". Just look for BLM land. In fact, the best way is to go to the BLM office near you and look through their map offerings. All of SoCal is desert, so that should make the "finding desert" part easy. The easiest way to find where water is, is look for a town. Towns in the west were located where water was. No water, no town. I always carry my own water. In fact even if I am just driving through and not planning on stopping, I carry 6 gallons in the trunk.
My advice, pick a spot and bring a water buffalo. For those who don't know what those are. http://olive-drab.com/idphoto/id_photos_m149.php I am sure there is a word for them in "civilian".

Or.......at buttload of water that you pull behind your Prius.
its a high school that has a part time elective wilderness survival class.
Are teaching it?.......or does the school has an instructor?
If it's a legitimate class for credit....should have a syllabus......lesson plan and study guide with goals.
If it a bunch of buddies on an adventure....the advice given is still valid.
An area for practice should have been found and presented....along with all safety measures, (including water, first aid, emergancy services, permission slips etc etc.)

You guys are correct of course.
At high school level this "class" would need all these things plus one other not mentioned, a teacher certified by the state to teach the course.
And I will bet a buck that California does not have a certification for "wilderness survival" in its accreditation system.
Probably "Health and Recreation" is as close an anyone could come. I used to hide both simple prepping and recreational camping in the "Life Skills" course which was a requirement of my state.
The late Ron Hood came as close as anyone in California to having a certification in the field and he had a great deal of difficulty getting the mentor team of his Phd effort on board for his doctorate dissertation. He had to change it to a more mundane topic they could understand.
They no longer just assign a teacher to a class with no training or interest so they can sit and read the newspaper while the kids kill time. They have testing scores to worry about and no time to waste.
If you didn't bring jerky what did I just eat?
Probably in the performing arts. Firebuilding to eclectic renaissance music or something along those lines.
