    Be aware.

If you are aware of what could happen you will most likely prepare yourself for situation. Situational awareness allows you to be prepared for what could happen and possibly avoid the survival situation all together.

I have always heard this as you CAN live 3 minutes without fire, 3 hours without shelter, 3 days without water, and 3 weeks without food...

I assumed that the 3 minutes was based on a situation involving water and once out fire should be your priority.

For the new folks on the site. The rule of 3s is nothing more than a mnemonic to help you remember to keep your priorities straight. The circumstances you find yourself in will, of course, dictate which of those is really of the greatest importance. In the desert, it may be water, in winter it may be fire. And, it's just a general rule of thumb. You may live longer without water or die much sooner depending on your circumstances.

    Where? Barrow in January!

I've been out in -50- for hours at a time day after day without fire. I don't think I died.

Drop the parka and the long johns, do a dunk in the lake and then let's talk about the 3 hours in -50. As I said in #50, it's all about circumstances.....but then.....you know that.

Fires start themselves at the temps you had! In a survival situation, I think a fire is very important. If for nothing else, it is a comfort. It is also a signal, a way to get warm, cook, keep dry, etc. I've worked all day below zero without dying also. I didnt hurt until I stopped doing stuff...brrr!

Y'all would have heard me take credit for writing the rules of 3 if I had... Just sayin...

Also, like I said, "you CAN live 3 minutes..." Which you proved. Its been over a week since I had a fire and I am still alive. Course I live in the subtropics.

Prevention!! Living in a hazardous area can be a little discerting if a catastrophe becomes a reality. A wise choice would be, If you live below a dam for example, to move to a better location. WAIT! I live below a dam, damn.

I am probably too late to get in on this but here is mine.

It is difficult to keep it to just one but the main one is >

Do unto others as you would have them do unto to you, including bears. Some say do unto before someone does unto you.

And I have to add a couple more > Never say never.

And make the most of the time you have.

Don't try to just go off into the woods or the wild and try to survive Unless one is an expert at outdoors survival and even then it is difficult. Get a piece of land, build a retreat, bug in or bug out location with a well stocked bunker, with books, experience and knowledge and one just might be prepared for anything. Just my .02 Ameros, FRN's some say dollars.
