Green maters. Love em. We do the same thing here with green maters as we do with the crooked neck squash to keep them for frying. Coat them with flour then dip into a wisked egg then back to the flour for another coat. Lay them out on a cookie sheet and put them into the freezer. When they're frozen we put them into a good double zipper freezer bag and in the freezer they go. Get the pan hot. Take out what you want to fry and that's all there is to a summer treat any time of the year.

btw nell. Teens have a way of changing over time. My son wouldn't have been caught dead in the garden as a teen. Now you should see the garden he puts in each year. Soon his kids will be teens and the cycle goes on.:>)

She's been dancing a jig for a month or more. I sure wish she'd stop. She bounces up snow in AK and rain farther south.

Neat trick on the frozen maters, oldtrap. I didn't know you could freeze them. That will be on the list of things to do this year. Thanks!!

Rick, I've done no such thing, you must have your own weather witch somewhere that you've upset.

Had the very first Strawberry from the garden today, oh it was good!

Well it was close! The time by the forum was 12.54am (my time) so I was an hour early!!

While I'm here, I'm wondering if someone could tell me what crooked neck squash taste like. I'd really like to give them a try next year. I'm not keen on courgettes(zuccini?) all that much, do the crooked necks taste different?

I think crooknecks are milder than zucchini, and the flesh and skin are more delicate, and watery, less starchy.

So they are good eaten raw, or quickly cooked. But do not hold up like zucchini do.

I like them sliced, brushed with olive oil, seasoned, and quickly grilled:

I agree that crooknecks are milder tasting. Truth is I don't care for zucchini at all other then in zucchini bread. The crooknecks however I like most anyway you can fix em. Winnie, I'd sure give em a try. I'm real happy I did.

btw grrlscout I think has a real good idea there with the grilling of the crooknecks. Sounds pretty good.

Spent the day today finishing out a batch of bread and butter pickles for the wife.( I don't care for em but she loves em) Now we just got done with 8 pints of homegrown salsa. (everything was grown out in our yard) Makes a good dip but I really like to cover my scrambled eggs with it.
The summer garden is about over down here. Still a few maters, peppers, eggplant and okra. Won't be long before we get the fall and winter garden in the starter box. Cabbage, culiflower, broccoli, carrots, brussel spouts.
