Glock Knife

I just bought a Glock Knife after having one of those "why have I not seen this knife for the past 40 years?" moment.

Before there was a Glock Pistol Mr. Glock was already making knives for NATO forces. It was a simple process of adopting the blade from the old 1970s era M16 rifle bayonet, squirting a near indestructible polymer handle onto the tang and saying "good enough".

No kidding, it looks identical to the old M1 Carbine/M14/M16 bayonet blade except for the saw back edge.

According to the research it is steel equal to 1095, just like the KaBar. That puts it part way between a Mora Companion and a KaBar on the usability scale.

It is half inch shorter than a KaBar and 3/8" narrower spine to edge of the blade. It also has the saw back. They call it a "root saw" which can be used to ease the fighting hole digging process. This thing and a Glock Entrenching Tool will get you underground in no time I'm sure.

The whole thing is coated with a thick substance that looks to me like black enamel paint, though I am sure it has a fancy name.

It sharpens up easy enough, and being a field knife I have not put a razor edge on it. This one gets raked through the V shape carbide thingy and called "sharp".

The really neat part of the rig is the sheath! It is made from good tough polymer and injected into the wildest knife holder thermoforming mass production could imagine. It has a blade lock feature as well as a clip on the belt and lock feature, along with a tie down loop and drain hole. I forgot about the knife right after I sharpened it but I have been playing games with the sheath for two days. It's neat.

Ive thought about getting one in the past but decided I really didn’t have a use for it. A couple of military’s in the world use it in their armed forces. I’ve also read it was made to be thrown as well. Throwing would be the only use I’d have really but I don’t do that anymore.

For digging, I have a military issue e-tool and the cold steel shovel or if I wanted to go lighter, a hori hori.

A e-tool sounds useful. I want to get one to keep at my car, alongside my axe. Not long ago I needed to do a temporary, makeshift repair on a road (cover a hole) and I had to make do with a wooden plank and patience, as I had no shovel at hand.

I actually keep some sort of shovel in my car. Right now I have the old military e-tool in there. In the past it has been the cold steel special forces shovel. I have never had to use them on the side of the road but better safe than sorry. I also keep some sort of chopper in there. Either a hatchet or a boys axe. I have had to use the axe on a tree that fell across a dirt road once.

Some folks can go for a lifetime and never need a shovel or axe in their rig, then those of us that live in the rural atmosphere often find ourselves needing both. Old Hunter63 used to keep a cordless chain saw in his truck.

Advice from an old geezer is to run down to one of the big box stores and buy yourself a full size shovel cause when you need one you are going to need a real one and not a half shovel. Even if you have to cut the handle down a couple of inches to make it fit it will move more dirt than an E-tool.

I dug my share of holes with an E-tool and there is nothing that is better than the moment the "big truck" arrives with the real shovels.

Most folks don't realize that the old duce and 1/2 had shovels mounted on the sides and the old Jeeps had a shovel and an axe strapped on as standard equipment. I never noticed any of that on the new crap. I suppose they have some kind of AI hole digger they issue now.

Todays E-tool is not like the old ones and I do not like the new style D handle. It is very ergonomically limiting. Back in the day we were taught to use our E-tool as a close quarter weapon and that is difficult to execute with a short D handle shovel.

You can file a nice edge on the old E-tool and use it as a chopper, or edged weapon. Good for cutting brush off a small site, or splitting the occasional head, but not something I would want to use to take down a tree of any size.
