I was actually talking with my grandfather about this just this afternoon. Had that attack occurred in Texas, the assailants wouldn't have had time to finish the deed then stand around and get publicity from bystanders, because the crowd would be pointing guns at them, not cameras.

Unfortunately, the Govt hogtied the British public's ability to carry weapons many years ago. I'm horrified and ashamed that this could happen in my country. More so, that there were so many there and none offered help. The two have been arrested, and are in hospital with gunshot wounds. With luck, after conviction they will be placed in Stangeways Prison. Although solitary confinement and segregation exists, it is frequently breached. One can live in hope.
Much as I abhor the idea, arming the Police is rapidly becoming a necessity.
The fact that EU laws for human rights works in favour of the criminal does not help. Frequently folk who intervene find they are then the criminal. There is always some leftie liberal scumbag lawyer(sorry Ken) who is more than happy to represent pondlife like this to grab themselves a headline and put the public off intervening in any future incidents.
As an aside, Service personnel have been banned from wearing their uniform in public!

My heart goes out to the family, friends and colleagues of the fallen soldier. Every single Imam that professes this kind of disgusting nonsense should be hunted down and eradicated. When free speech incites this type of carnage it becomes complicity in the murder and they should be dealt with swiftly and permanently with malice!

Not arming the Police at the very least, is so ridiculous on so many levels, that it boggles the mind. The MO of terrorism has evolved and we have to evolve in how we deal with it. Training and allowing regular people to carry makes sense.

Clearly this is a screwed up situation our government has gotten us into. If the Middle East wasn't situated over so much energy, there would be no confrontation. I can understand the anger of many average Arabs (although I don't endorse their tactics). They see the industrial powers of the world, backing and/or installing corrupt governments and then hauling off billions of barrels of precious oil while their society has been infected by western influences that undermine its youth, traditions, and culture. I think we might very well resort to similar strategies if the situation were reversed.

The way I see it we have three choices: 1) STATS QUO. Keep using their energy resources until they have been virtually depleted. Under this scenario we can expect continued random acts of terrorism and the need for an expensive military presense in the region until there are no significant quantities of recoverable oil or gas left. 2) ELIMINATE THEM ALL Might make us unpopular with the rest of the planet, but dead terrorists (and potential terrorists) are no longer a threat for random acts of terror. Not a very realistic choice but still an option. 3) ELIMINATE THE NEED FOR THEIR RESOURCES This happens to be my personal favorite. The technologies already exist which could replace fossil fuels today. It might require some sacrifices up front, but I'd rather do without for a while than keep asking the youth of this nation to continue to sacrifice life and limb so we can postpone the inevitable. The sooner we acknowledge the need for sustainable energy, and develop a coherent plan to achieve it, the sooner we can leave the Middle East to determine its own destiny.

Until we move from option #1 to option #3 we should be prepared for more heinous acts of terror and the need to defend ourselves.

I feel so bad for the family of this veteran. An armed society is a polite society and this horrific act just goes to show guns don't kill people.

Not going to turn this political, but just remember that the fight against Jihadist attacks isn't only with the Middle East, nor is it just over Oil. Chechnya is not one of the states the US is tearing up over oil, yet the Boston bombers happened. This most recent attack in the UK was another example of how this toxic ideology isn't centralized in west Asia anymore: the only foreign link found so far was to Nigeria.

Be careful before thinking of Islam as too closely linked with Jihad, nor equating muslims and arabs. Jihad isn't really contained regionally anymore, it's being spread over the internet. No political ideology is really contained geographically anymore.

If you were responding to my post GU, you'll notice I never mentioned either Islam or Muslims. I said this was largely an issue of political corruption, social degredation, and energy. I can't that say I understand the Chechnyan situation, but Nigeria is a top 10 oil exporter. Undoubtedly energy profits/policy is interwoven within the Nigerian extremists agenda. Our standard of living is dependent upon plentiful and cheap supplies of energy, but I think I've already covered that topic sufficiently in another post.

My heart goes out to this young mans family colleagues.

I firmly believe you cannot wage war on terror wherever it comes from and under any guise. You cannot fight an ideal. I believe the only way this can be dealt with is to tighten our borders, and closely monitor any possible threat on our territory. Bring our troops home and let them do the job they signed up for, protecting their own country and citizens and leave the rest of the world to Police itself, or not as they see fit. I also believe acts of terrorism should be classed as treason and the penalty should be death without appeal. Maybe that might make these scum think twice before attacking citizens.
It would appear I have ranted.. hey ho.

Here's a fact--no more, no less, no between the lines, no insinuation:
The only thing all these jihadist terrorists have in common is that they are Muslim.

Sorry B, but that's about as insightful as saying all Rabbis are Jewish. Jihad is an Islamic term. So the "fact" that all Jihadists are Muslim is obvious. Acts of terror are not exclusive to Muslims. If I remember correctly, Tim McVeigh was a Christian. Religion has very little to do with the underlying motives for terrorism. I can't say the same for extremist religious sects though.

It still makes me wonder if carrying would have done any good in this situation....or would it have been necessary to bystanders to being carrying, and act, to have prevented this atttack.

So I guess I do agree with the OP but wonder how effective it would have been in a supprise situation.

That's why I specifically said "jihadist terrorists" -- distinguishing those from all others with an ax to grind, including Christian.

    So...when I read this...:

I connected 2 dots and responded with an obvious fact. We've debated this very issue many a time and have gotten into circular arguments with no insight gained. We (the country) can continue to dance around it or we can face facts and act accordingly. JMHO.

It's damned about time that we decide that non-citizens ARE NOT ENTITLED TO ANY OF THE BENEFITS OR CONSTITUTIONAL PROTECTIONS AFFORDED TO OUR OWN CITIZENS BEYOND THE RIGHT TO A FAIR TRIAL.

I have a few ideas that will curb the problem.....

    1. Eliminate the "anchor baby." If neither parent is a U.S. citizen at the time of a child's birth in the United States, the child should NOT be considered a "natural born citizen."

    2. STOP the visas, student visas, resident alien admissions, etc. of anyone even remotely questionable. ERR ON THE SIDE OF CAUTION.

    3. Grant political asylum only in the most extreme cases, with full documentation required.

    4. Deny admission to ANYONE who does not have a professional skill that will benefit US.

    5. Require anyone seeking admission - as well as all non-citizens already here - to pass a polygraph test, at their own expense, regarding their intentions while here.

    6. Always err on the side of caution. If the slightest red flag appears, deny admission or deport immediately.

    7. Withhold ALL welfare benefits to non-citizens. No EBT cards, no Section 8, no free medical care beyond emergency care sufficient to stabilize them for the return trip home, no food stamps, no free or reduced tuition, NOTHING! Deport as necessary.

    8. Eliminate ALL deportation appeals.

    9. Immediately deport anyone (as well as their dependents) convicted of a violent crime where no jail sentence was imposed. Immediately deport anyone (as well as their dependents) sentenced to jail upon completion of the sentence.

    10. Use profiling. It works for Israel.

    11. Require weekly reporting by all non-citizens - just like we do for people on probation. Failure to report = deportation.

    12. Under no circumstances should non-citizens hold government jobs unless they possess a critical skill or have information we need.

    13. Under no circumstances should a non-citizen be permitted to carry or possess ANY firearm except for law enforcement/military cooperation/training purposes or TEMPORARY hunting/international shooting competition purposes.

    14. REVOKE the citizenship of naturalized citizens if it is determined that he/she gained citizenship with mal intent or under false pretenses.

    15. Eliminate "political correctness" in law enforcement/terrorist matters. http://bostonherald.com/news_opinion...ness_in_terror

The concept is simple. If you have the slightest suspicion about the intentions of someone knocking on you door, you don't allow them into your home. If you have the slightest suspicion about the intentions of someone in your home, you ask them to leave or throw them out if necessary.

One of the serious problems today with Moslem terrorists is, as in England, the "lone wolf" cell: one or two or three Moslem terrorists who act independently, secretly, to commit terrorist acts.

Some of the Moslem jihadist Imams have been urging their followers all over the world to form tiny "lone wolf" cells to carry out "small" acts of terror, telling them that would be almost impossible for authorities to stop. Intelligence gathering depends on being able to penetrate a group, or talking with people who talk to others planning terror acts. A tiny cell of one or two or three at the most is almost impossible to penetrate, such as the Moslem terrorists who murdered the soldier in London, or the two Boston bombers, etc.

Just a few days ago, in Boise, Idaho, the FBI arrested a "lone wolf." These young jihadists are everywhere in the United States and othe countries. There is a Moslem mosque here about five miles south of where I live. There are many, many Moslems who have been brought into the country, including here in Boise, who are from Somalia, Sudan, Ethiopia, Syria, Yemen, the Moslem states of the old Soviet Union, etc. This all done of course, by the "compassionate" do-right-daddies and do-right-mommas who just want to help out the "unfortunates" of the world. Bring them here and they'll love us, don't you know?

Do they all hate us and want to destroy us? No. But there are thousands who do.

I have absolutely no doubt that the young "lone wolf" arrested in Boise, also has some admirers and perhaps "co-conspirators" right here in good ol' conservative small town Boise, Idaho.

Link to the arrest of the young Moslem.
