I just saw an ad for an upcoming movie (Wanted) where they say basically, if you are good, you can curve a bullet around an obstacle (like another person) to hit your target behind it just by moving the gun as you fire. I wonder how long it will be before some idiot tries this and kills somebody.

It works with bow hunting as well. If you kind of jiggle when you shoot the arrow will weave its way through heavy brush. (BS smily) Mac

While we're on the subject....I once heard a Ranger say the worse place to walk down a street was next to a wall. That a bullet fire parallel would hug the wall about six inches out because of air pressure dynamics. Walking along a wall was a good way to get killed. He said you had to walk about 12 inches out from the wall to stay safe. Not having been in combat, was he BS'ing the guy or is there something to it. It almost sounds scientific enough to be believable.

I believe the reason that you are not supposed to stand close to a wall in combat is because of debris if a shell hits the wall.

Ricochet, yes aerodynamic flight, no. The same thing happens with bullets fired down a street the ricohet will travel low if it made contact with the road at a low angle. If a bullet hits a wall at a low angle (Fired down a street) it will follow the wall pretty much for a long way down the street.

Firearms odd. We were shooting at a frozen lake, targets set up at the far bank. We walked across to set up more targets and heard this fierce buzzing sound. There standing on its end was an AK bullet spinning like a top on its nose on the ice. ZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZ. It just kept going and going like the energizer bunny. Mac

That's true. It's the ones that are trying to figure out if they are one of the few that have me concerned.

It was a conversation I happened to overhear and he was telling it with a straight face. Believe it or not there are one or two things in this world I don't know and this one has always sort of stuck in my head. I could never find any info on it. I think Mac may be very close to the truth on the ricochet theory. That does make sense. I assume it depends on angle of contact, too.

We've done training on this, using a . 40 Glock and a 12 ga. with slugs. Kind of amazing, really. We put up a man sized target, along a wall, and using your gun from behind a corner, put your hand(s) with the gun around the corner and shoot at the concrete wall from an angle. Pretty good strikes most of the time.

oh yeah. maybe the trailer should also have specified that if you are, angelena jolie will recruit you, picking you up in a percision choreographed high speed driving stunt scene, so you'll know for sure. honestly, we could have done it better, i don't know why they don't let us run the show.

A ricochet will normally only rise a few inches above the ground. A technique I was taught was when someone is hiding behind a car to fire at the pavement under the car and bounce the bullet into the perps legs. To practice this on the range we set up 1 liter soda bottles filled with water behind a junk car and tried to hit them with the M-9 and M-16. It surprised me how well it worked. Call it a form of "indirect fire".

RBB, It is interesting to note that we received this training from civilian law enforcement weapons instructors.
