Not really an answer to your question, but if you are needing iodine for water purification to drink, then I would look for chlorine dioxide instead. If you need it for other reason...never mind.

whats the advantage of chlorine dioxide over resublimated usp iodine crystals?

i am going to use them for water purification.

the thing i like about the crystals is that they will purify so much water with so little crystals. like 5,000 or so quarts per once of crystals.
    pretty cheap also.

but hey, if theres a better way, id love to know about it.

Personally, I would rather use sodium hypochlorite. If you want a solid rather than a liquid, you can use calcium hypochlorite. Both release chlorine once it comes into contact with water. It's relatively cheap and chlorine dissipates on contact with sunlight while iodine will remained suspended in the solution. Another drawback to iodine is some folks are allergic to it. You can pick up sodium hypochlorite at any swimming pool supply store.

Iodine has side effects when used a lot. If you plan to use it only for a day or two for emergencies, no problem. But, if you plan to use it extensively to purify water on long trips you can develop some problems. Allergies to iodine are somewhat common. You might not, it depends on you. The CDC does not recommend it for pregnant women and small children. That should tell you something. It also might not be affective against cryptosporidium. Anyways, the choice is yours, not mine.

Can iodine in water be neutralized? Will running it thru a charcoal filter remove the iodine?

Charcoal only adsorbs organic matter. It does works very well on iodine. In fact, iodine is used as an indicator of the amount of total surface area of activated carbon. It's referred to as the Iodine number.

FinallyMe is right on target and covered an area I missed. Chlorine is also weak in protecting against cryptosporidium and not entirely affective against Giardia. That's why the best method to obtain pure water, aside from boiling, is filtering followed by chemical treatment. Remember that viruses and smaller bacteria can pass through most water filters so chemical treatment is needed to kill them.

    Cool For the record...

Polar pure is not 100% Iodine crystals, I had to buy mine from my friendly phamacist. It WAS a bit cheaper, however.
