Well, that's neat. It looks like it ought to serve as a portal to a magical realm when the moonlight hits it at a certain angle. I'm guessing it doesn't, mind, but it ooks like it *should*

Indeed it does!
Still can find a few in my area, but clearing for subdivisions are making them a thing of the past...

I thought the same, a old Native American trail marker but the park service didn't identify it as such. It's a Oak tree, how old I don't know.

I have come across quite a few marker trees out here in the area of "The Place".

Lots of them may not have been Native American but possibility early settlers, as well..... as many I have come across are at corners, or along a fence line of existing boundaries.
There is one that I use for a seat while hunting.....pretty comfy and fits fine.

One spot has a 4 corners with a large tree trunk in the center of a 10ft. by about 10 ft .....or No-mans land inside the 4 fences.....picture a tree trunk inside of this #.....seems these people have been arguing for a while......with stakes and survey flags every where.

Wonder who owns the inside of the square?.......If they would have just used the tree..... it would have been even.
