I've read the 7600 is a 1000 round weapon. After that you start having problems. And accuracy suffers when the barrel gets hot. I like the concept of the 7400 (semi-auto). Have you had any trouble?

So far I haven't had any trouble. Took a few mags to get the pump action rhythm down, but now it shoots very nicely. I still don't have a scope for it so I haven't had much of a chance to do real solid accuracy tests, but I did plenty of research before I bought the gun. The consensus online is that accuracy goes Rem 700, the 7600 a close second, and the 7400 noticeably worse. I believe the 7600 shares the same free float barrel design of the 700 and the 7400 doesn't. So I haven't had 1000 rounds through the gun yet, and still need a scope to give you a good grouping, but I've read again and again that the 7600 can shoot tight groups. 1" groups at 100 yards, 2" groups at 200 yards with a solid rest. Plus they are realllly popular in PA for deer hunting.

Additionally they are insanely customizable. Because they are such a close resemblance to a shotty, they have just about all the same custom features you get with a shotgun. Heres some examples of a 7600 customized for police work. They are also popular prison guard guns and really popular in Australia.

I have come across this as well....Most hunting guns would suffer from being fired continuously over a period of time.

They weren't designed for that....they were designed for accurate shots, at game, once or a couple of times a year.

I'm sure the 7400 is in the same boat.

When ever read about old military rifles being used as a SHTF weapon, my line of thinking was "why not just save a little more money and get your self a decent hunting rifle?"......that said I was looking at it as hunting rifle, not a defense/offense rifle...with the ability to keep firing no matter what.

So I guess I have changed my thinking somewhat, and begun to appreciate the merits of the "old soldiers" (or new), and gave me an excuse to add to the collection....and try to stay out of the river with the canoe.

My number one choice is still shot gun 12 ga pump, .357 wheel gun. and .22.....although I have been leaning toward the AR platform.

Hmm an AR would be nice if this "SHTF" scenario turned into a combative situation to deal with looters, organized mobs, etc. Also a "SHTF" scenario could go as far as international relations get sticky and we're dealing with an invasion (China, Iran)... or possibly an internal crisis results in dare i say a revolution(Economic Inequality)?

A pump shotty would handle most of the hunting duties in addition to trapping, foraging, fishing, etc. you are set for food. Plus with buck shot it can take down just about anyone and a slug could do work on any light body armor. So close range combat a shotgun could do a lot of the dirty work.

Having a hand gun would be necessary as a secondary weapon for self defense and a quick back up in a squeeze(no time to reload, primary weapon malfunction).

Then it comes down to hunting rifle vs. AR. IMO I would probably go with the hunting rifle. Not only would it be more effective at taking larger game than trying to take a deer/elk/moose with a shotgun, but a hunting rifle and a sniper rifle are pretty much synonymous. Snipers are some of the most efficient military personnel and can be a major headache for an enemy force. Plus survival skills, primitive hunting skills, etc. all play in very well with the role of a sniper.

All you could ever really need in a SHTF situation is 5 guns. An AR .223, Varmint gun .223, a .22 rifle, a 12 gauge shotgun, and an autoloading pistol like a Glock. Of course I have way more than this, but I'm saying that would easily keep you ready for almost any situation.

For a good rounded gun, I would chose an AR in .308. Great for all game in my neck of the woods, effective on persons even with a fair amount of armour, and with a scope you can still take long distance kills. Do I own one? Nope. But I sure wish I did!

For a shotty, a pump 12 or 20 would be my choice. Effective and reliable for everything in 100yds and versatile just by varying your ammo selection.

Pistol, I would go with a semi-auto such as a Glock, Ruger, S&W, etc in either 9mm or .40. They are reliable, the rounds work, and the ammo is popular so acquiring more in a pinch is a bit more than feasable.

Being prepared means you always have one gun with you at all times though and the best one is the one you have til you get to the rest.

No one has mentioned the savage over and under. for a survival gun I think their single shot .222 on top and .20 guage shotgun on the bottom is a great gun. I've used mine on outings for 2o plus years. I'' thinking along the lines of food more than self protection. I'd also carry a handgun for that. I've taken deer and grouse with my little gun.

.222 and a .20 guage would be sweet! I miss my old .22cal .410 over and under I used to hunt with when I was a kid.
