Thread: firearms poll

    Default firearms poll

Unless you want to add another catagory I think this will be the end of our polls for the recommended equipment list. I appreciate your responses and I will try to put it together next week. Please list your prefered firearm for handgun, shotgun and rifle. I know there are too many variables to limit your choices to one in each group. Perhaps later we can expand the list to include sub-catagories. Thanks!

    Handgun: .22LR. I'd take a .22 handgun just not mine. I have a P-22. It's O.K. I can think of better 22 handguns for survival. On a 1 to 10 scale I'd give it a 6.

Shotgun: 12 GA. Remington 870. Good for game and camp defense. A 10 on the 1 to 10 scale.

Rifle: 270. Winchester M-70. Accurate and reliable. Never had a problem with it so, a 10.

What can you recommend or not recommend?

I have a similar set up.

Pistol: .22 cal P-22 - id have to agree with you, a very nice firearm, but I can think of more appropriate .22 pistols for survival.
Shotgun: Remington model 870, I made the decision to get mine in 20 gauge. Just personal preference. Its a little lighter and for what i use it for 20 gauge is all I need.
Rifle: .223 Ruger Mini-14, i actually own 3 of them. But the one I use most of is an early 80's model. Still in very good condition. I think these rifles are some of the best ever made for the price. You can pick up and older used one in the $300 range. Not to heavy, shorter than you average rifle, and .223 is an awesome round. Wont burn a hole in your wallet, not bad distance either. The ONLY complaint I have about the Ruger mini-14 is that you cant use Military M-16 style mags as you can on most other .223 cal rifles. You have to use the mags from the factory. But they do come in 5, 10, 20, 30rds and so on.

Pistol: Stainless Ruger Single Six with .22 mag cyl. in place.
Shotgun: Remington 870 12g with 26" choke system barrel, and 18" imp cyl
Rifle: Ruger M77 in 30-06 or .308, Rem 700 in 30-06 or .308, and Marlin 336 in 30-30 (all great guns)

My stainless Ruger M77 in 30-06 is a clover leaf producing deer hammer and have a hard time justifying to myself that I "need" another hunting rifle but a Rock River Arms AR in .308 is not far off for me. I also have a blue and wood Ruger M77 in 7mm Rem Mag. It is also waaaayyy more accurate than it should be being a bone stock rifle. I prefere the 30-06 over the 7mm Mag due to it's lower recoil. All that being said my Marlin 336 in 30-30 gets 70% of my hunting time going after deer and hogs. Gotta love a Marlin lever action! Best.

Ruger single six in .22lr/.22mag with 6.5 in barrel
Winchester mod. 13 pump gun w/26in barrel 12ga.
    Springfield Armory M-6 in .22lr/.410

I feel confident I can get food with any or all of these firearms, and as far as defense anything that comes to hand is what I tend to use.

This is tough, but here goes:

Rifle: Savage M24C (Camper) .22LR/20 gauge 3" Improved Choke
Shotgun: Same. (This gun is so versatile, I'd take two of them.)
Handgun: Harrington and Richardson M929. .22 LR, nine shot revolver.

Handgun: Ruger Single Six with .22 mag cylinder
Shotgun: Remington 1100 with modified choke
Rifle: The only rifles I have are in 9mm so it would be my Highpoint 995

EDIT: Oops. Forgot about the .22s. Ruger 10/22 for me.

I've got my options in this poll. Rifles should be broken down between centerfire and rimfire. I don't think a survival battery is complete without both.

    Wilderness Survival

    Ruger Single-Six
Rem 870 12 ga or Ithaca 37 (the 37 handles ice really well)
    Ruger 10-22
    Rem 700 .30-06

    Fighting for Survival

Glock - Pick your flavor mine are 9mm
Rem 870 - 20 inch non-rifled barrel, extended mag optional
AK or AR - My AK is in the closet my AR is in a safe

    Mac
The Colhane Channel TV for guys like me.

Don't know about pistols! I suppose if I were gonna own one it'd be the Redhawk in .357 or a Glock.

I miss my 10/22, but my Glenfield 18 shot is very accurate and dependable...for 40+ years running now.

I've owned post eighties Rem. 870 and Mossberg 500 and both fell short of perfect for me.

The mini 30 is fairly dependable.

Ahhhhhhh.....there's the confusion. It's not to start one, it's to be prepared for/deter, someone else starting one.

I only see one flaw, in your thinking. I'm lazy....so instead of taking them all with me, I think I'll just stay here, with all of them.
