    Default Golden Rain Tree

We’ve got a couple of Golden Rain Trees (Koelreuteria paniculata)
in the back yard. This time of the year they develop small yellow flowers. On a windy day it looks like yellow snow (no, not that kind). After the flowers all drop off, the trees develop seed pods that look like little paper lanterns. I’ll take a few pictures when the seed pods come out.

Those were taken with a Canon Power Shot SX10 IS. I didn't buy it at Amazon, but it'll give you an idea of what it is. http://www.amazon.com/Canon-Powersho.../dp/B001G5ZTZO

As the flowers drop off, the seed pods emerge. As the seed pods mature, they change from a brownish, leathery looking pod to a pink one. Down here we don’t get too much in the way of the leaves changing color. Some --- but most are either green year round or go from green to brown very quickly. This tree is a bit different. In the span of about a month or so, the tree changes from completely green – to almost completely yellow (the leaves are still on the tree but the flowers are so prominent that the yellow stands out so much) – to brown with the emergence of the seed pods – to pink. Kind of a neat tree to observe.

Just to finish before our first snow…….

The pretty seed pods have all turned to brown and are being carried off in the breeze. Each side of the “lantern” has 2 seeds on it. Depending on the breeze, they float quite some distance.

I always knew you boat people were strange...... why would anyone want a golden shower tree, well except for some people in San Francisco.

YCC - mostly an ornamental (as far as I know). Fairly good shade tree too. The bees seem to love it, so that's a plus.

The Golden Rain Trees are in bloom again. I just love these trees. As you stand beneath the canopy it sounds like several large bee hives above you. There are literally thousands of bees at work. We've got a mini Nor'Easter blowing today. The last two pictures shows why they are aptly named.
