    Default Fire thong

I guess this is more of a question for Tokwan seeing he's the only active member that lives in the area where this is actively done, but has anyone seen the fire thong being used with bamboo as the mechanical strip? I've only see videos of rattan being used but many mention a strip of green bamboo can be used. The ONLY time I have 'seen' bamboo being used is in an episode of "Man Woman Wild" and I wouldn't be surprised if it was staged.

I once saw Les Stroud attempt this method (or something very similar) on one episode of his show.
You have me thinking about scuppernong vines and a cedar hearth board...

Though it did break on me, I have felt some warmth using kudzu. River cane broke way sooner and didn't even have time to warm up.

The thong can't be held too vertical or it puts too much strain on it. I looked like an ape hunched over with wide spread arms bowing. Haha.

I tried it, but wasn't successful.
Made a hearth board from cherry and used an unknown vine.
I think the vine wasn't "abrasive" enough, and I didn't add any tinder in the hole.
I'll try again when I get a chance.

Think cherry might have been too hard? Did the vine break on you and could you feel any heat or smell anything?

Probably. I couldn't find a suitable piece of cedar. The vine didn't break but it was smooth as glass after the first attempt, and no discernible heat was produced. At least not enough to smoke.
I did watch the video in the link hunter provided, I'm definitely going to give it another shot or three.
