    Default 4 Wheel Drive Survival

I know many of you enjoy the back country in a 4-wheel drive vehicle and some of you might be considering a 4-wheel drive purchase. Either way, 4-wheel drive as a BOV is a good tool. Here's a video that offers some ideas on the type of gear that you need/want to have along in case 4-wheel drive is not enough. If you check below the video, they have another short reel offering tips on how to drive in mud.

Its curious that you started this thread. A week or so ago, I stumbled across a vehicle that would fit this niche admirably. It is a "Bobbed Duece". Essentially it is a surplus US Army 2 1/2 ton truck. One of the rear axles is removed and the bed shortened a bit. It is still on the large side, but what a proven vehicle. And what seems to be suprising is that they are selling in the $7,500 to $10,000 range. Seems quite reasonable for such capability. I am working up the nerve now to try to persuade the wife that I absolutely, positively need one of these.

I've seen those and I have to admit they score high on the cool scale. However, you can get a 5 ton cargo in decent condition for about the same price.

That is true. I think the draw for me is the size. A bit easier to handle while getting out of Dodge. And it should be able to handle everything I would want to put in it. Although the cool of a 5 ton is good also and room for more "stuff"

Oh yes, I have stuck a regular "Deuce" up to the frame, had a very unsympathetic NCO just hand me a shovel. Now if I can get the significant other on board, life will be sweet

I'm a memeber of 2 off road clubs up here and some of these guys have some impresive rigs. I had a Jeep that I used but to get it done up here you need AG tires and at least 1 ton axles. I'll post up some pics of our trail runs and their rigs. Very capable BOV.

I have been wanting to build a cab-over camper on my Duce & Half 6X6 with nice knotty-pine siding, and cedar interior. Here is a photo of my brute, the 2,500 water has been removed, I will use the tank as part of a future septic system. Notice the firewood in the back of the truck.

In all honesty the smaller lighter rigs are much better to get around in the bush. Easier to manuver and seems to almost float over the mud and muck.

Hope, you need a water cup dispenser to hang on the back of the tank. That would be an awesome water cooler!

Rick has several of these cups as fashion accessories.
