Magpie - please consider this. While it is true that in some cultures urine is consumed, it is not done so in "survival situations", but rather as part of a ritual or other such thing. In a survival situation when you become dehydrated and desperately need water the concentration of harmful byproducts in urine are at their highest, therefore the most harmful to you. It is those harmful byproducts that will, in your weakened condition, bring the onset of increased thirst, dehydration, organ failure, etc. Think back to Rick's post - Urine is clear, have no fear - Urine is yellow, you're a hurting fellow. When you are dehydrated your urine will be darker (can be almost orange in extreme dehydration cases) at which time the toxicity is extremely high.

In ancient China they used to encourage every member of a city, human and animal to place their urine in a sectioned off field, each section was for a season. They then "harvested" the salt peter and other chemicals that formed in the soil.
they would move the location of the fields and after all the harvestable chemicals were taken some peat, bone meal and manure were sowed into the soil and the following year that field would produce a bumper crop of just about anything that was planted in it.
