    Default Fyke Net

Here is another of my nets. The one that 36 years ago got me involved with nets that were once used by the Pennsylvania Dutch in this area. The group that I demonstrate for put me in touch with a gentleman who taught me his family netting techniques and patterns.

    FYKE NET
Designed to catch suckers during their spring upstream spawning migration. 2 funnels of netting facing inwards prevent the escape of fish. A drawstring at the closed end allows retreival of fish. Placed facing downstream

Holy Dipnets, Batman. That's a great job. How many hours did it take you to make that?

That's awesome. I know there's a joke about catching suckers, but I don't want to derail the thread.

Thanks for the kind words guys.

Rick, That net was made over 35 years ago and was my first big netting project. I seem to remember it took about 20 hours or so to net. For me the worst part was bending the wood. I had no steaming cabinet so I soaked wood lath strips in a black plastic bag on a hot summer day. I only broke a couple of strips. I should have used much thinner strips.

crashdive123, I have heard all sorts of jokes about that name. It is actually the real name of a native PA fish. http://fishandboat.com/pafish/fishht...p13suckers.htm Tony

That looks a lot like the hoop nets I use in the river, except for the front hoop. Would it be used in deep water by attaching weights and letting it sink or in shallow water by placing rocks on that plank on the front?...

    Sparky93,
Your second choice is spot on. Staked at the closed end and weighted at the open end. Shallow water. Tony
