I do the old smudge trick with decent enough results.
Dried cow dung or cedar brances tossed upon a bed of coals. Let the smoke waft over your clothing and body...it works to keep the skeeters at bay.
My favorite bug deterrent is to simply camp in the fall or early spring before the little blood suckers come out or after they have been killed of by Mother Nature.

It's not the itching that gives me the most concern. It's that they can be desease vectors.

Yep, agreed. And it seems that this year is a bumper-crop year for ticks up my way.

I chuckle about the similarities between your profession and mine.

I kill the little blood suckers, and you well - you know what you do. We both deal with vermin.

As well as others. Some thoughts just can't be "articulated."

Mosquitoes and other bugs are always frustrating and they turn your outdoor supposed fun time into a nightmare of swatting and smudging the stubborn mini animals endlessly. And this comes at the risk of contracting disease causing viruses and bacteria ranging from the usual malaria, to the emerging Zika virus and the strange Chikungunya.
However, as a member has said, before getting a bug spray it is always wiser to exhaust the non-drug measures such as wearing long-sleeved clothes and adequately covering tents and baby carriers with nets.
When it comes to long outdoor stays with kids such as camping, I prefer long lasting natural essential oils. My best bug repellent for babies are the Cliganic 10 Pack Mosquito Repellent Bracelets. They are DEET free and thus safe for kids. They are made from plant oils such as Geranoil, Citronella and lemongrass and besides mosquitoes, they are tough on no see ums, fleas, ants, flies, chiggers and so on. Thus letting you and your child enjoy your time out there.
What I love about Cliganic is that it comes in a pack of 10 wristbands and each bracelet can sustain you for 250 hours or up to 10 days once you wear it. The bands design is stretchy in order to fit any wrist or ankle, both for children and adults.
The bug deterrent is also waterproof and thus its strength is not affected by water or rain.
What I don’t like about DEET and picaridin is that although they are highly effective for all kinds of insects and bugs, they safety has not been proved beyond doubt. They remain contentious and some users have reported effects such as allergic reactions, nausea, headache, and migraines. Problem arises when you don’t know the right concentration to use, especially with kids.
