I do the old smudge trick with decent enough results.
Dried cow dung or cedar brances tossed upon a bed of coals. Let the smoke waft over your clothing and body...it works to keep the skeeters at bay.
My favorite bug deterrent is to simply camp in the fall or early spring before the little blood suckers come out or after they have been killed of by Mother Nature.

Mosquitoes and other bugs are always frustrating and they turn your outdoor supposed fun time into a nightmare of swatting and smudging the stubborn mini animals endlessly. And this comes at the risk of contracting disease causing viruses and bacteria ranging from the usual malaria, to the emerging Zika virus and the strange Chikungunya.
However, as a member has said, before getting a bug spray it is always wiser to exhaust the non-drug measures such as wearing long-sleeved clothes and adequately covering tents and baby carriers with nets.
When it comes to long outdoor stays with kids such as camping, I prefer long lasting natural essential oils. My best bug repellent for babies are the Cliganic 10 Pack Mosquito Repellent Bracelets.
