First let me thank you for your warm greetings. I have been gathering survival supplies that were suggested here but haven't put them to use yet. I am awaiting the arrival of my first child. I want to teach him all there is to know about self suffetioncy in the way of the great outdoors. In order to show the way, I must go the way, so I've been studying up on identifing edible follage and poisonous plants, building expedient forms of shelter, methods and construction of trapping, and practicing the art of making fire under different conditions. This, I have come to learn, is just the tip of the iceberg. If there is any suggested litature, practices, or links (aside from learning how to spell) to increase my knowledge in the related topics, please advise. thank you for your time

Man you just opened a can of worms there! This whole site is dedicated to those things you just mentioned! So my advice is to keep reading the "stickys" along with anything else you want more info on. However, first, in order to teach, you must learn. (So sayeth the wise, old Zen Survival Master & resident Curmudgeon.) That means you're going to have to find some local folks that know their stuff & don't mind sharing. My 1st thought, since I don't know which region of hte country you live in, is to advise hooking up with a local Boy Scout troop as an adult volunteer. There you can start to learn "hands-on" those things you've mentioned. If they're of no help, don't give up, just keep searching.

Also, regarding your future relationship with your son, please visit this thread: http://www.wilderness-survival.net/f...ead.php?t=7030 I think you'll like it & get the idea as well.

Here is the official book thread. You'll find a lot of good reading in it.

That was an excellent article Sarge. To further introduce myself I live in Crystal Springs, Mississippi. About six years ago my wife and I purchased a house on six acres of hills and gullies, half of wich is covered in a well established system of kudzu. This broad leaf bulb grows like something off the sci-fi channel. Are there any uses I should know of.
