spring pole fire drill

i was messin with my fire bow today and it just wasnt cooperating with me. so my solution was to jam a branch into the base of a tree. i tied a cord onto it and a t handle. i used the spring of the branch to pull the mandrel of my fire drill. i exerted effort in one direction only it worked great. Has anybody else tried this spring pole method to light fires?

I had a lot of fun with it today. normaly i dont have too good of a luck at starting bow drill fires. perhaps i am not patient enough.the spring pole helped keep the cord where i wanted it,the pole did half of pulling work (so it saved me effort).i'll do it again tommorow to see if it sets up and operates as easy as it did today.if it works it will become a part of my system.this method has my interest.I started out to build a pump drill. cant seem to put togather a "fly wheel" for it yet.so it was back to the bow drill. the string wouldnt stay adjusted right. i needed a way to keep it tight. my solution was the spring pole and it worked very well!

i have just been looking for a way to fire bow that is comfortable for me to get dependable results.i am already comsidering a way to not hold the bearing block so i can just pull the rope. that will take a trip to the woods. i need a fallen limb with a edit in it. its worth a try!if i can apply pressure from a pinching branch mabe performance will be improved.

For a flywheel, use a stick with a hole in the middle so there is an even amount of weight on each side. It is easier than carving a circle. I will try the spring pole fire. I have also ben having trouble with friction fires.

the spring pole offered me more control,less effort, and it seemed to work quite well.

I've thought about doing it that way but never tried it. It seems like it would work just fine. Mac
