Good stuff PGV. I know that several people have posted about using the water in your hot water heater as an emergency source (as did the 2nd article you posted) Recently I had to change out a hot water heater. When I drained it, there was so much rust colored sludge and carp, that I do not believe it would have been safe to drink. Is there a way to get the water out of the tank without draining it from the bottom?

All water storage tanks can have this mineral buildup accumulated in the bottom of the tanks. I've also seen it in fresh water holding tanks that are plastic lined. This rusty sludge needs to be filtered off. IMO hot water tanks as a emergency water source is at the bottom of my list. But, for people living in large cities this may be one of only a few ways to get water immediately.
