    Default Gun for Grandson

I found a used H&R Topper Jr .410 today in a gun shop for a reasonable price so I bought it for my grandson. I will have to sand down the wood finish and re-stain it. Other then that it it great shape. I will also have to cut the stock down a bit to fit him.

klkak, I got one just like that for my grandson back in the fall for $30.00. I am going to let him start using it this coming fall. I have even been thinking about taking him with me once or twice this spring during sprng gobbler season.

Nice klkak, he's gonna love it. Not only is it a gun, but it is a grandpa custom.

My oldest doesn't know it yet but I have a .410 snake charmer that is going to be hers when we get back to the states this summer. That'll be a fun day.

My first shotgun, an H&R Topper in 20ga back in the '50s. Don't fire it but still have it and it has killed a boxcar full of small game. Great gun for anyone.

I have a Cooey 410 that my dad gave me, and I will pass on to my grandson as soon as he is old enough to hunt. I shot a lot of grouse with that old gun....I look forward to hunting with him.

Nicely done klkak, your grandson is a lucky kid. I bought my grandson a Cooey single shot .22 last year. Riverrat I had one of those old .410's when I was a kid. Bought it from this old guy that lived a couple miles out in the bush from our place for $5. and some lengths of stove pipe I "found laying around". I think I was about 11, I wound up trading it to another kid for $10 and a hunting knife about a year later.
some fella confronted me the other day and asked "What's your problem?" So I told him, "I don't have a problem I am a problem"

I think I'll give it to him for his birthday. He turns 7 next month.

My grandson just turned four. I was at a gunshop recently and saw a tiny little .22 rifle. I've been wondering how old I'd have to let him get before I should go buy that little gun.

What do you think? How old should a kid be - before his grandpa buys him a gun?

I'll be able to wait. After all I have some work to do on it before I give it to him.

IMO it's all on how the kid is raised and taught. Think about years ago when elementry school children brought their rifles to school so they could get dinner on the way home. The PC police would have a fit now-a-days. If you take him out and teach him, you'll know.

I bought twin grandsons a Marlin 39TDS each for their sixth birthday. They followed the rules and there was no problem.
