How to Stay Alive in the Woods by Bradford Angier is, in my opinion, like the bible for outdoor survival beginners. I've been holding on to mine since I was kid. After I developed my love for the woods, my older brother bought me a copy for Christmas. I want to say that the year was 2003, but it might have been earlier.
You were a kid in 2003?! I have underwear older than that. Hang on a minute. Yeah, this pair is 1994.
Yep......I've got underwear that is older.
***you realize of course that we are just kidding right?***
In 2003? Gosh...I was already retired from all competitive sports....gosh!........muahahahahahahahahahahahaha hahahahaha

At one point, extremely early, in learning about wilderness survival (I must have been about 12) I ended up reading all six of Don Paul's books including Everyone's Outdoor Survival Guide, Great Living in Grubby Times, Everyone's Knife Bible and 21 Ways to Use Your Hammock in the Field. When I was younger, I liked those books but by my late teens I realized that there were much better resources available like How to Stay Alive in the Woods, the Boyscout Manual (I was never a member), Outdoor Survival Skills, The Survival Handbook, Tom Brown's Field Guide, The US Army Survival Manual among others.

Reading stuff from books and having practice experience are two different things. A carpenter can only learn so much without having his tools in his hands, and the same thing goes for wilderness guys. I can read how to make fire 100 different ways, but until I make fire one hundred different ways, I won't know how.
