I don't know the scenario that is implied here, but the choice is rather simple for me. Coffee! I don't smoke and would only take tobacco on trade if it was in my favor so I could use it to barter with poor souls as yourself, probably for some of your coffee!

You mean that you guys do not have coffee reserves in the supplies?

If you were really serious about this long term apocalyptic crap you would have adequate supplies of both smokes and coffee.

I have enough coffee to outlast my meds just in case I don't die as soon as the meds run out!

And I have a one year supply of meds.

Speaking of meds, I quit smoking when I had the heart attack that created the need for the meds.

But you guys keep on puffing. Leaves more for the nonsmokers after you have "the big one" when there are no ambulances, hospitals or medical services available.

You don't just put a band aid on a heart attack and tough it out!

Besides, we did this coffee thread about a month ago and it turned into a Starbucks mocha supreme advertisement.

If we do the Venezuelan thing you will be happy to have a cup of generic instant a year past its expiration date.

Just what sort of B movie plot are you envisioning that would last more than a week or two?

To answer the OP - coffee of course. Gave up smoking about 20 years ago. Coffee stores well. If you are not storing coffee you 1) are not a serious coffee drinker and 2) are not preparing for any kind of disaster.

The last camping trip that I went on I brought a large container of coffee that I bought 8 years ago. Yeah, I have a lot of coffee.

If you have plenty then what is up with the obsession over both things, coffee and SHTF?

This is the second thread on the subject you have started in a month.

And here is the forum reminder and disclaimer; This is a wilderness survival and local disaster oriented forum, intended to deal with short term situations where rescue is eminent.

Doesn't coffee go bad after a few years?? I had an unopened can of coffee that was about 4 years old that was buried behind a bunch of stuff on the shelf. It tasted very weak and wasn't very good!
Guess you have to rotate it ayyyyy??

don't drink coffee, don't drink alcohol, don't smoke..... look squirrel!

You don't need that stuff, so why store it?

A while ago, we had a discussion about barter items. My stance is that I will not store barter items, just items I need. I don't need to barter if I have what I need.

But what if you run into a Waltons scenario?

Its TEOTW and your job goes, then the money goes, then the wife tells you she is pregnant with child #8, and all the grown kids move back home and grandma and pa move in with you, then the chickens stop laying, and the cow goes dry and the mule dies,

and then things start getting really rough!

What you going to trade for a new mule?

What's this talk of other forums? Nobody tells me nothin'.

You want SHT? My cousin just informed me he's going to be a new dad. He's 46. I told him to use a new rope. An old one might break.

I got coffee. Plenty-0-coffee. Don't need no stinkin' smokes. I quite smokin' in '89 and I don't drink alcohol.

See there Rick, these youngsters don't really know what SHTF is! My wife would have been after me with a dull hatchet if I have gotten her PG at 46 and no amount of preps in the world would have saved me! I would have been a dead man, not walking, but running and screaming into the sunset, possibly never to return.

So these other forums of which he speaks, which are becoming fewer and fewer, are dealing with 30 year food storage, hording gold and silver, stockpiling massive amounts of weapons and ammo, medical supplies and body armor, all tucked away in a bunker under the garden shed,,,when what they should be addressing is proper use of birth control by middle aged couples.

So I guess the "helmets" weren't the birth control kind......
