If you didn't bring jerky what did I just eat?
I've made a couple of batches of hard tac over the years. I can say with a certainty that I got the hard part down pat. But it did taste good.
And....it lasts forever. I do not believe there is a mold alive wicked enough to attack hard tack.

Many years ago I was the curator at a sizable local museum located in the deep south. The storage area was a treasure of strange and wonderful things.
The town had been a huge supply depot during the CW with two rail lines and 5-6 major highways intersecting in the middle of town. Fortress Rosecrans, with a detachment of 40,000 men, and they had cannon pointed directly at the courthouse square to insure the natives stayed peaceful.
We found a few packages of Union issue hard tac still wrapped in the original waxed paper. We put one package on display and had a serious conversation about eating the rest. Being the first among cowards when it comes to eating the unknown, I passed.
That was back in 1994 so it was at least 130 years old and it looked as fresh as if it had been baked yesterday.
