I made a video about making fire with a pair of binoculars. I used my Bushnell Custom Compac binocs and char cloth with a grass tinderball.

I carry a credit card Fresnel in my smaller kit as well. I use it for small work, too, like splinters.

I have both a hand held loupe (10x) and a head mounted (10x). I often take the hand held with me but not the head mounted. We have quite a varied assortment of gem stones in Indiana including gold and diamonds so I've been known to spend some time looking through creek gravel.

Coot - I don't have trouble seeing that gnat. It's my own fingers I have trouble finding.

I've tried a magnifying lens and fresnel lens. They both work fine in the summer, but it takes longer to work on cloudy days. What seems more important is the time of year you use it. I can never get them to start a fire in the winter.

During the winter the sunlight has to travel through more atmosphere to get to you, and so loses a lot of its energy. In the summer the sunlight travels a shorter path to get to you, and has more energy for your glass to focus.

Isn't that the purpose of the magnifying lens? To magnify the heat, it will still work.

Bulrush - I get what you're saying but it's also on a lower angle. Perhaps that might have some impact.

Hey, Mac! - Aren't you moving into fall/winter in Bolivia? If you are, can you try this out? I just wonder if you rotate the whole thing a bit so the sun is shining directly at the lens if that would start a fire?

my friend was in the pocanos and he didn't have a magnifieng glass. he took apart his cheap 99 cent store flashlight and used the lens in that. He said it took quite a while and eventually he gave up...

The lense on the flashlight is a flat piece of plastic or glass. It will not focus a beam. He may have had better luck trying to focus a beam with the refector.
